GUIDE TO PAPERS Paper topics Question structure / Marks Tips on answering questions / timings Key Geographical Themes 1 hour 45 minutes Short answer questions Focus on number of marks available. 1 mark - keep it short and no explanation needed 2 marks sometimes 2 basic points to be made or 1 point that has been developed Resource Based questions Look the resource carefully before you answer. Look at the key so you know what the symbols to any map/diagram/chart mean Use information from the resource in the answer 4 mark question (reason and explain) Sate your reason, add a connective followed by what that reason means. E.g. One push factor is civil war BECAUSE people are scared of being hurt or killed so decide to move to a new place Case Study (12 marks) Use the structure provided. You are asked to write 3 Practice tracker First practice Second practice Third practice 2

Sustainable Decision Making Exercise 1 hour 30 minutes The paper is divided into three sections: The Background 10 marks The Options 14 marks The Decision 16 marks developed points. Separate these into 3 distinct paragraphs. Use key facts and figures to develop the points you make and demonstrate you know the case study. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are worth 3 marks so force yourself to use Capital Letters and Full Stops and Commas where appropriate. Remember that place names should start with a capital letter. If you need to use MEDC or LEDC example, remember the difference. LEDC poor. MEDC-rich. Choose the correct case study Read the Resource Booklet 15 min Read through every resource. Look carefully at any graphs, maps and diagrams check the axis, scale, key etc. to make sure you understand what they show. You can add labels/annotate with ideas/thoughts. The Background 15 min 3

These are usually shorter questions that are worth 1-6 marks. If asked to interpret a map or graph, be as accurate as you can. If describing, say what you see and include figures and geographical terms. The Options 25 min These are usually two longer questions worth 6-8 marks each. They should be answered using two developed PEEL paragraphs. Include information from the resources, but don t just copy out chunks. The Decision 35 min (this includes planning time!) This is the most important section. It is a good idea to plan your answer this could be a quick mind map of the key points you need to include. When explaining how your chosen option is sustainable be very specific about how it is socially, economically or environmentally sustainable (SEE). Write in clear PEEL paragraphs 4

using evidence from the resources to support your points. Make sure you answer every section of the question if you miss a section out it will significantly reduce your mark. If you are running out of time write a sentence for any remaining bullet points to pick up some marks. Types of command words used in this paper Give reasons for Give an advantage and a disadvantage How many Describe the pattern Use data to support Explain how/why Suggest how/why To what extent Identify stakeholders opinions Complete the table Identify 5

GUIDE TO REVISION Topics for the Themes paper Rivers OR Coasts (you must know both) Population OR Settlement (you must know both) Natural Hazards- Tectonic e.g. earthquakes/volcanoes) OR Climatic Hazards (weather e.g. hurricanes) What you need to know / be able to do Specific material Revision tracker Know your case studies Processes of weathering and erosion Landforms Management (flood defenses and coastal management) Coastal processes Know your case studies Population Change over time (demographic transition model) Effects of rising populations Population Management e.g. one child policy Migration (push and pull factors) Know your case studies Types of hazards and causes (climatic and tectonic) Processes that lead to them Management of the hazard See case study booklet Textbook 4-49 See case study booklet Textbook 56-100 See case study booklet Textbook 108-152 First Second Third 6

Topics for the Sustainable Decision Making paper Economic Development What you need to know / be able to do Specific material Revision tracker Development indicators Identifying and explaining why countries are at different stages of development Employment structures Industrial location Multinational companies The effects of development on the physical landscape Global climate change causes/effects/solutions As this unit is being examined for the sustainable decision making exam, you will not be tested on your case study knowledge but you will be expected to apply that knowledge from the case studies for this unit to the decision making question. For that reason, revise the content for this unit the same as you would for all the above units. First Second Third Case Study Booklet Textbook 214-204 7
