The economy witnessed strong growth during 2004â 2006, growing at 7.0% in 2006. However, this momentum subsided slightly in 2007, with growth of 6.4% recorded. The economy had proven resilient to the global financial market turbulence, with both the external and domestic sectors holding up well in 2007. Retail and tourism were important contributors to this impressive growth. Local consumption demand grew robustly in 2007, especially in the second half of the year, on the back of rising incomes, a robust labor market, and the strong performance of the asset markets. Private consumption expenditure grew by 7.8% in real terms for 2007 as a whole, up from 6.0% growth in 2006, the fastest growth since 1993. Demand was especially strong in consumer goods and services. However, the economy recorded a lower growth rate of 2.3% in 2008 and contracted by 2.7% in 2009. The countryâ s economy strongly recovered to 6.9% growth in 2010..
