In order to succeed in this and other online classes, you will need to be self-motivated, dedicated, determined, and have a serious commitment to learning and working on

Students should spend a minimum of 7-9 hours per week on course material, researching, and preparing assignments. Your time will be best utilized reading assigned chapters and PowerPoint materials weekly basis and try not to be left behind. 5. These PPTs summarize important concepts and key points of each chapter. Also, students need to check if there is an additional course material (video clips, supplemental readings, or PowerPoints) assigned. COURSE OBJECTIVES The goal of this course is to review the major theories and techniques of individual counseling. Students will learn and practice fundamental individual counseling skills. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course you should: 1. Be familiar with the major conceptual models of psychotherapy 2. Be able to critically evaluate the empirical support for various models of psychotherapy 3. Begin developing competence in individual counseling skills and techniques 4. Have an understanding of ethical issues related to conducting psychotherapy and apply this knowledge to practical experiences 5. (If you code does not work, you need to email me immediately so that I can get you a new code in time) Quizzes (40): There will be 4 non-cumulative quizzes which may include multiple choice and T/F questions. Quizzes will cover book chapters and PPTs. o 20 questions for 1 hour. o Each quiz is worth 10 points (0.5 point per each question). o Quizzes are an open book test and will be available on Blackboard. o See the Tentative Course Outline (page 8) for the specific dates and times for each week. Exams (40): There will be 1 exam which will cover book chapters (4 10) and their related PPTs. It is an open book test and will be available on Blackboard. o 50 multiple choice and/or T/F questions. 3 hours will be given to complete. o The exam is worth 40 points (0.8 point per each question). o The exam will be available during the week of 4/3 just like the quizzes. Important notice on quizzes and exam

4 When you face an error message or technical problem during test on Blackboard, here are the steps you need to follow: 1. Immediately open a support ticket via Technology Service Center by calling at (325) 942-2911. Make a report of your problem and then you will receive a confirmation email in a couple of minutes. 2. Case of Stan: Students need to go to the MindTap and watch Video Quiz: Case of Stan for each of the following 5 chapters. You can for your own learning experiences, but they won t be added towards your grade of this assignment. After watching each chapter s Case of Stan, students submit your answers to the questions listed as below. Your answers should be brief (1 ~3 sentences for each question) 1) What was the most interesting moment in this session? And Why? 2) What kind of technique the therapist use in this session based on the theory of the week? If multiple, list all techniques you find. 3) For what specific reasons did the therapist used that particular technique in this session? Provide the rationale for each technique. o Submission: go to the Assignment Submission. o Due date: normally on Fridays 11 PM. See the Tentative Course Outline (page 8) for the specific dates and times. o Grading: this assignment will be graded both on correctness as well as effort or thoughts put into the answers. Video Interview with an Expert: Students need to go to the MindTap and watch Video Interview with an Expert, and take the quiz questions during the video play for each of the following 3 chapters. You can watch and take the quiz twice and the best score will be your final grade. Ch. 4 Psychoanalytic Therapy Ch. 6 Existential Therapy Ch. 8 Gestalt Therapy

5 o Due date: normally on Fridays 11 PM. See the Tentative Course Outline (page 8) for the specific dates and times. Literature Review Paper: This assignment involves organizing a lot of information into a written document by reviewing, summarizing, and synthesizing the current understanding of a particular topic. It is designed to help you become up to date on the state of knowledge and the research that has been done in a particular research area. Students are to select one counseling theory of your interest and conduct a literature review based on the chosen therapy approach. You may look into a certain issue and discuss your choice of therapy as a possible treatment approach. For example, you want to address the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for treating teen depression and suicidality. The focus of your paper should be how this CBT can help this issue specifically and you cite significant previous researches on the effectiveness of CBT on the issue. Do not spend pages on explaining what CBT is and how it goes in session as we all learn that through our textbook and class assignments. Dig deeper than general information of CBT. You may use 1 or 2 paragraph to describe your choice of therapy in the beginning of the paper, and that s it. Filling your paper with definition, key concepts and techniques, etc. will result in point deduction. You must do library research or online database search on ASU library website to collect journal articles (and books) to write your paper. Information from the Internet website such as Wikipedia or similar sites will not be accepted. Only the materials from scientific publications (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles) and recently published books should be used as references. Submission: go to the Assignment Submission Due date: o Literature Review Paper Topic Statement: 4/7 (Fri) 11 PM o Final Literature Review Paper: 5/5 (Fri) 11 PM Research Paper Evaluation: 1) Literature Review Paper Topic Statement (15): o Students are to write why your topic is important to research in this topic statement and it will be your introduction part of the final paper pretty much. o The length should be 1 or 2 pages (excluding cover and reference page), double spaced. o References: at least 3 references. 2) Final Literature Review Paper (45): Students are to use APA style in writing their papers and the reference list. Length: The paper should be no more than10 pages (not including title and reference pages), double-spaced, with one-inch margins. References: at least 15 references.

6 EVALUATION Please note that points do not round up in this grading scale. If your total score is 179, your final grade will be a B. So make sure that you don t end up being right below the cutoff line. GRADING SCALE % POINT RANGE A 90 100% 180 200 points B 80 90% 160 179 points C 70 80% 140 159 points F < 70% < 139 points GENERAL CLASS POLICIES Late Assignments: 1) Late assignments will only be accepted after direct contact with me via email and provision of acceptable rational explanation of delinquent behavior. Failing to do so will result in late work not being accepted. 2) In any case, late assignment will earn only half the points of what it could have earned if submitted on time. 3) An exception to this policy would be legitimate and unforeseeable reasons such as illness, family emergency, job emergency, or university event. You will be asked to provide a valid document as an evidence of such incident (e.g., a copy of release form from the hospital, letter from your supervisor at work, etc.). Make-up Exams: Exam dates are fixed along with the 15 hour time frame (open from 8 am to 11pm) so please do your best to plan your semester accordingly. 1) If these test dates have conflicts with your life events scheduled before the beginning of the semester (e.g. wedding, surgery, etc.), you need to email me in advance to request for the rearrangement of the test date. 2) If you miss a test for legitimate and unforeseeable reasons, you need to provide a valid document as an evidence of such incident (e.g., a copy of a release form the hospital, letter from your parents or supervisor at work, etc.) via email no later than 1 week after the test date to save your chance to take the test. Failing to do so will result in zero score on your test. See the Late Assignment policy 3) for the details for legitimate and unforeseeable reasons. UNIVERSITY POLICIES STUDENT ABSENCE FOR OBSERVANCE OF RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence.

7 ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic honesty is expected on all work. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their online experiences. Any student found guilty of any form of dishonesty in academic work is subject of disciplinary action and possible expulsion from ASU. PLAGIARISM Plagiarism at ASU is a serious topic. The Angelo State University s Honor Code gives specific details on plagiarism and what it encompasses. Plagiarism is the action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own. Plagiarism is literary theft. In your discussions and/or your papers, it is unacceptable to copy word for word without quotation marks and the source of the quotation. We use the APA Style Manual of the American Psychological Association as a guide for all writing assignments. Quotes should be used sparingly. It is expected that you will summarize or paraphrase ideas giving appropriate credit to the source both in the body of your paper and the reference list. Papers are subject to be evaluated for originality via Bb Turnitin.
