Welcome to the Course. Course Description: This course will introduce students to the study of society, focusing on the use and critique of the main sociological theories and techniques used to investigate the human condition. We will examine social institutions, processes, and practices across a range of social structures, cultures, and historical periods. Learning Objectives: This course s objective is to teach students about the different aspects of Sociology so they may understand, study, and possibly implement them in their daily lives through analytical and critical thinking. Furthermore, students will be better able to determine if they wish to establish Sociology as their field of study. Required Textbook: Henslin, James M. 2015. 4 6 1 2 3 5 lorem ipsum dolor What am I graded on? 4 Exams, 10 Quizzes, and 5 Group Assignments Exams: 4: 100 points each For this course you will have four exams including a final. What type of questions? All four exams may consist of multiple choice, true or false, and/or short essay questions. What do they cover? Material tested will include assigned textbook readings, articles, lecture, and videos shown. Is there only one day to take the exam? No, students will be given 3 days in which they may select the best time to take their exam. Students pick the best day out of the 3. Then, they will have 1 to 2 hours to complete the exam on the selected day. Are their make-up exams? Yes, but there will be limitations as to the circumstances. It must be due to a university approved absence, provide proof, and if possible contact the professor before the exam time period or a week after the exam. If there are extenuating circumstances preventing a student from being able to take the exam, please inform the professor as soon as possible. Quizzes 10: 10 points each There will be 10 quizzes that consist of multiple choice and true or false. They will cover assigned readings. Each quiz will be posted on a specified date(s) at the beginning of the week. There are no make-up quizzes after the week ends. Assignments 5: 20 points each Group Assignments will be scheduled throughout the semester. They will require all student participation. Those students NOT participating will earn a ZERO for their assignment. How do I earn my grade? Type: # Total points (%) Exams 4: 400 points (50%) Quizzes 10: 100 points (25 %) Assignments 5: 100 points (25%) Are the grades rounded up? I do NOT round up on points earned. For example, if you have an 89, you will have earned a B in my course. Letter Grade A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 0-59 Incompletes: Having an incomplete affects your future courses and places a damper on your future plans. There are extremely limited circumstances in which an incomplete could be given. * Doing poorly in the class is NOT an acceptable reason for petitioning an incomplete. 2

Students must express researched answers vs. opinions. The classroom is a place where students can express a diversity of viewpoints, but each individual s viewpoint should be expressed respectfully and involve no personal attacks. You can challenge the views of others, but you must be prepared to present credible evidence, and see how that evidence compares to evidence supporting the other person s views. Extra Credit: There will be NO extra credit offered throughout the semester.
