Course level: Completion of college-level course SPAN 321 by the end of Spring 2017. a. RICE STUDENTS who successfully complete the SPAN 321 course during Spring 2017 at Rice University are exempt from taking the placement exam. b. ALL APPLICANTS must take an online placement exam to determine their competence if they have not taken the applicable 321 course (available from December 5, 2016 to January 20, 2017). 2. Course grade: A grade of B in the last relevant language course taken during the previous two academic semesters (spring 16 and fall 16). If the applicant has not taken any language courses during those semesters, they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and receive the appropriate placement in the required course level through the placement test. 3. Essay: (Maximum 500 words) Essay questions are included in the application 4. Interview: After submitting the online application, applicants who meet the criteria will be contacted by the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication to attend either an inperson or Skype interview with the Faculty Leader of your respective Rice in Country program. 1 This placement test will be used for your placement into the study abroad program of your choice. If you are required to take another course at Rice prior to participating in the program, the placement will be used for Fall registration.
SELECTION PROCESS: 1. Criteria: The Faculty Leader for each Rice in Country program will review and rank applicants according to the compliance of the candidates with the basic requirements (GPA, previous coursework, etc.), as well as the assessment of their commitment and ability to fulfill the academic objectives of Rice in Country. 2. Selection: A Selection Committee comprised of all Faculty Leaders overseeing summer 2017 Rice in Country programs will make the selection of admitted applicants. REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY: 1. Application fee: The application fee is due at the time of application. Applications will not be considered until the application fee is received. Once received, the application fee is non-refundable under any circumstances. 2. Program deposit: A program deposit of $500 is due within two weeks of acceptance to the CLIC Rice-in-Country program. The refundable deposit will be collected to secure your spot in the program once you are accepted in the program. The deposit is fully refundable after successful completion of the program requirements. The CLIC administration and Faculty Leaders will communicate the program requirements to you.
