Workshop C: Vicarious Trauma: Understanding the Root Causes and Identifying Protective Factors Mental health professionals who work with survivors of trauma often experience pervasive and distressing changes in how they experience their own self, others and the world at large. This is called Vicarious Traumatization. Additionally, given the current climate in the world we are forced to confront the ongoing fear of terror through international and domestic terrorist attacks. Recent violence within communities caused by racial tensions is creating additional fear and panic in our clients and in ourselves. These developments add to the nature and extent of vicarious traumatization for mental health professionals. To continue to work empathically and effectively with our traumatized clients we must be able to identify vicarious trauma and vicarious terror symptoms within ourselves. We also need to implement protective factors for ourselves, personally and professionally. This workshop will focus on the causes of vicarious trauma and vicarious terror, if it exists within you and what you need to do to protect yourself as a clinician.
