EdD in Professional Educational Practice Frequently Asked Questions Updated April, 2017 Is the EdD an accredited doctoral Program? Yes. The degree was approved by the Board of Regents on January 20, 2011, and by the WASC Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities on November 9, 2012. We are a recognized affiliate of the Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED). How many students are admitted to a cohort? 25 to 30 students. When will Cohort III students graduate? Summer, 2020. When is the deadline for applications to Cohort III? The deadline for applications to University of Hawai i at Mānoa Office of Graduate Education is January 15, 2017. The deadline for supporting materials is February 15, 2017. It s up to applicants to ensure that all documents have been received and are on file by the deadline. Incomplete files will not be considered. Are people from other islands able to participate in the program? Yes, it is possible for those who are willing to travel to the campus meetings on Oahu. These meetings are held on Saturdays (five in the fall and five in spring), and during the summer. Members of Cohort I and Cohort II traveled from neighbor islands. Affordable accommodations are available through the East West Center and possible stipends are available for interisland travel. Is the program available to students in the continental U.S. via distance learning formats; do we offer any on-line programs or hybrid programs for EdD? No. WASC approval is required to offer the EdD as a distance program (25 miles or more from the campus). Remote participation is not possible. Is the GRE required? Not at this time. 1

What is the sequence of courses for Cohort II? Note: Al l courses, course sequence, and meeting times are tentative YEAR ONE Summer 2017 Fall 2017 Spring 2018 June 12 to July 14 Saturday I Sept. 9 Saturday I Jan. 20 S aturday II Sept. 23 Saturday II Feb. 3 Program Orientation Saturday III Oct. 14 Saturday III Feb. 24 EDEF 767 Seminar on Educational System: Saturday IV Nov. 4 Saturday IV Mar. 10 Transformational Leadership (3 cr) Saturday V Dec. 2 Saturday V April 14 EDEF 762 Social and Cultural Contexts of Education (3 cr) EDCS 632 Qualitative Research (3 cr) June 11 to July 18 EDUC 710 Consultancy Project (6 cr) YEAR TWO EDUC 710 Consultancy Project (6 cr) Summer 2018 Fall 2018 Spring 2019 EDEF 678/EDCS 732 Critical Qualitative Approaches to Research (3 cr) EDCS 769 Curriculum and Program Evaluation (3 cr) EDCS 780 Mixed Methods: Conceptual Foundations of Research (3 cr) EDUC 710 Consultancy Proje ct (6 Cr) YEAR THREE in Practice (6 Cr) Summer 2019 Fall 2019 Spring 2020 June 10 to July 17 EDUC 740 Field Studies/Dissertation Writing (3 cr) LTEC 640 Educational Technology (3 cr) EDEF 675 Policy Studies: Leadership for Social Justice (3 cr) Summer 2020 EDUC 730 Program Conference (1 Cr) in Practice (6 cr) in Practice (6 cr) 2

What is the time commitment to the program? Please note that the following dates and times are tentative, but they are a reasonable guide to time commitment. All courses are face-to-face instruction. Remote participation is not possible during the program. In the normal course of events, you will be required to attend classes during five weeks in each of the summers and five Saturdays in each of the fall and spring s of the program. Summer meetings will be held from 1:00 to 4:00. Saturday meetings will be held from 9:00 to 4:00 with one hour for lunch. Do you require a Master of Education degree to apply for the program? A master's degree or equivalent is required, but not necessarily one in education. Is it possible that some of my previous graduate coursework will count toward degree requirements for the EdD? No. This is a cohort program of 64 credits. All students are required to take all the courses at the same time and in the same sequence. Will there be financial aid of any sort to offset tuition costs? Yes. Students may apply for scholarships, financial aid and/or student loans through Financial Aid Services (see link below). Outreach (Extension) programs such as the EdD that begin in the summer, must apply with FAS summer online application: http://www.hawaii.edu/fas/mymanagement/summer.php. The deadline to apply is April 17, 2017. Please note, as stated in the UHM Financial Aid Summer 2017 policy, if a student is not registered for their summer courses at the time of review, the FAs will not award aid, which may cause a delay in their award. Students will need to inform the FAS when they have registered for their courses. Correspondence with FAS needs to be done with your official UHM hawaii.edu email. You will have received instructions for creating your UHM hawaii.edu email in your acceptance letter. Students may apply for scholarships, financial aid, and/or student loans through Financial Aid Services (FAS): http://www.hawaii.edu/fas/. Students must complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA for Fall and Spring s and any additional requirements requested by the UHM FAS office to be considered for aid during the 2017-2018 academic year, which includes Summer 2018. The FAFSA is available at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. The UHM Title IV School Code is 001610. Is this program eligible for tuition waiver of six credits for UH employees? Not available at this time. How strict is the five-year admissions requirement? I do not meet the five years 3

minimum requirement in the education field. I have a few years experience, but not five yet. Would that cause a major problem getting into the program? Five years is a desirable requirement; but not a minimum requirement. Applications with less than the full five years will be reviewed. Does the five-year experience requirement accept Graduate Teaching Assistant positions? Yes. What is the difference between the professional practice degree and the PhD degree in the college of education? There are several differences. First, the aims of the two degrees are different. The PhD is a degree for those who wish to become university researchers in the field of education. The EdD degree in professional practice is for career professionals (teacher leaders, school administrators, clinical faculty, etc) who are looking for an advanced degree that will provide them with experience in the application of knowledge to problems of practice. Secondly, the EdD is a cohort program that involves three years of study with a good deal of emphasis on collaborative work. In addition, each member of a cohort will advance through the program in the same sequence taking the same courses and engaging in the same projects. Emphasis is placed on team-work as well as individual achievement. Thirdly, the EdD is designed with the career professional in mind. Coursework is offered during the summer to coincide with the summer break, and problems of practice projects will be conducted throughout the program in the fall and spring s. Will I be required to write a dissertation? Yes, a dissertation with a difference that we call a dissertation in practice. A dissertation in practice is one of two projects that all EdD candidates are required to complete. The EdD dissertation in practice is oriented to demonstrating the ability of the candidate to conduct applied research where the focus is on change in practice. Student in the EdD program conduct a practitioner research project that involves the formulation of a problem, a review of relevant literature, design and implementation of a plan of action including the collection and analysis of data, and a final report. The focus of the dissertation in practice is on application in the field. Candidates are expected to write up a full report of their project and present the results of this work at a concluding conference to be held at the university in the final of the program. Think of it as a practitioner action research dissertation. Can an EdD student apply for a GA/TA/RAship at UHM? 4

No. EdD students are all in full-time employment, usually in public or private schools in Hawai i, and also as full time UH employees. What are the total costs associated with the program? Based on current graduate (EdD) tuition rates for residents, the cost of the program is $44,864.00. The cost of the program for non-residents is $102,080. See http://www.hawaii.edu/policy/docs/temp/attachment_1_tuition_schedule.pdf. In addition, there are costs associated with book and software purchases and travel. 5
