Per 2-week stay, students must choose one vocational subject area from the following: ENGINEERING Applying scientific, mathematical, and practical knowledge, in order to design and create new structures and devices for everyday needs. BUSINESS & FINANCE Aspiring entrepreneurs study the theory behind successful businesses through research, discussion and debate on industry leaders. INTRODUCTION TO MEDICINE Identifying diseases, exploring ethics and investigating the science within our anatomy. PERFORMING ARTS From acting to perspective in photography, students study and enhance their ability in performing arts. MEDIA & COMMUNICATION Critically analyse the ways in which the media reflects, represents and influences the world. Academic hours consist of the following per week: 9 hours of academic English (streamed by language ability) 6 hours subject theory (classroom-based, in the mornings). 5 hours subject practicals (workshop-based teaching in the afternoons) 5 hours group project work (subject-based) Note: Group project is completed over two weeks, with presentations on the second-to-lase night.

Young Professionals d Overbroeck s, Oxford ACADEMIC INFORMATION OVERVIEW Classes are taught with a maximum size of 11 students, ensuring students are always engaged and receive ample attention from tutors. Each vocational subject area (e.g. Engineering) follows a different syllabus and focuses on developing a student s interest in future learning. Young Professionals 13-16 year olds ACADEMIC INFORMATION PRACTICAL SESSIONS Subjects are most enjoyed when students have the opportunity to get out of their chairs and experience their chosen areas first-hand. These afternoon periods will allow students to truly understand their selected subjects, whether it be in the laboratory (medicine), filming advertisements (media & communications), building structures (engineering), pitching mock-business plans (business & finance) or creating a production (performing arts). STUDY-IN-ACTION DAYS Every week, students from different vocational subject streams will embark on a studyin-action day. Unlike excursions, which are a combination of fun and cultural visits to famous English attractions and/or landmarks, study-in-action days directly relate to a student s chosen subject. For example, students who have chosen Media & Communications will visit a relevant institution, such as the BBC studios. Similarly, students studying Performing Arts would visit a location such as William Shakespeare s Globe Theatre in London. A list of example destinations can be found on the following page.

Young Professionals d Overbroeck s, Oxford SOCIAL PROGRAMME OVERVIEW Days out of the school are split into two types: excursions and study-in-action days. Excursions are a relaxed way for students to visit famous landmarks and attractions with the whole group. Study-in-action days have a larger academic element, as students visit destinations within that provide real-life experiences relating to their chosen subject area. Example excursions can be found below, whilst the next page shows sample study-in-action days. EXAMPLE EXCURSIONS BRIGHTON Arguably Britain s most popular seaside resort, students visiting Brighton can choose to spend free time shopping in the famous Laines, or visit the beach and Brighton s celebrated pier. CENTRAL LONDON WALKING TOUR This popular tour visits sites such as Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament & Westminster Abbey. CAMBRIDGE Oxford s rivalry with Cambridge runs back more than 800 years. On a tour of the city, students will see landmarks such as King s College Chapel, Senate House, the market square and the River Cam. THORPE PARK With seven roller-coasters and five water rides, Thorpe Park is one of the biggest and most exciting Theme Parks in Europe, and understandably a student favourite!

Young Professionals 13-16 year olds STUDY-IN-ACTION DAYS EXAMPLE DESTINATIONS JAGUAR LAND-ROVER FACTORY Engineering Students visit a car manufacturing plant to experience how vehicles are put together and sent to customers around the world. THE OLD OPERATING THEATRE Introduction to Medicine The Old Operating Theatre gives students an insight into how the medical profession used to work a few hundred years ago, and how medicine has transformed in recent years. ROYAL OPERA HOUSE Performing Arts Students embark on a backstage tour of Covent Garden s Royal Opera House in London, and learn how the grandest of performances are prepared for. BBC STUDIOS Media & Communications The British Broadcasting Corporation is one of the most famous networks in the world, and students get a look at the behind-the-scenes workings of the institution. BANK OF ENGLAND Business & Finance Located in the heart of London, students learn the Bank of England s role in keeping prices low and stable throughout the economy.
