History of Common Core Standards Common Core standards were created based on MA Frameworks 48 States are now implementing the Common Core standards MA added additional standards to the Common Core Prepare all students for college and career readiness Allow teachers and students to go deeper into applications to connect math concepts.

5th Grade Transition from MA Frameworks to Common Core 5 th Grade Topics Learning Outcomes Place value and numbers sense Geometry Fractions and mixed numbers Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, decimals, whole numbers and integers Coordinate graphs Data, charts, and graphs Patterns Consumer math Ratios, Proportions and percentages Algebra Measurements Probability and statistics Time MA Framework requirements for students: - Exposed to the content - Demonstrate - Analyze - Recognize Common Core requirements for students: - Students will need to be fluent which means speed, accuracy and manipulate problems. - Students will need to be able to read, write and explain in their own words.

6 th Grade Transition from MA Frameworks to Common Core 6 th Grade Skills Learning Outcomes Percentages Convert measurements Fractions Multi-digits Add, subtract, multiply and divide multi- digits Prime factorization Relatively prime numbers Ordering and absolute value Write, read and evaluate Area, surface, perimeter, and volume MA Framework requirements for students: - Integration of skills - Reasoning skills - Construct arguments Common Core requirements for students: - Reasoning skills -Writing, interpret and using expression skills -Discussing and developing formulas - Persevere
