FACULTY OF Economic and Management Sciences Undergraduate programmes for 2018/2019

Broad BCom programmes UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES Our broad degree programmes give you a thorough grounding in economic, management and mathematical sciences and a wide choice of career focuses. We also offer programmes that prepare you for professional registration or certification, and two programmes with a law focus. Please note: Focal areas are recommended combinations of modules within a programme. A choice of modules is admissible only if the timetable allows for the particular combination (i.e. to prevent timetable clashes). FOCAL AREAS 1.1 BCom This is the Faculty s broadest programme and offers students the widest possible choice of majors. It provides broad formative training and may include a field of study from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The focal areas offer students the opportunity to focus on a specific area of study. Agricultural Economics This focal area trains prospective entrepreneurs and employees for the agricultural business sector. Careers include general management, financial management and logistics management for the provision of agricultural inputs and services. Financial Planning This focal area was developed to enable you to enrol for the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning after completing the three-year BCom degree. Postgraduate Diploma graduands are eligible to write the entrance examination for the internationally recognised Certified Financial Planner (CFP ) qualification. Investment Management A BCom degree with Investment Management as focal area not only prepares you for a career in, for example, portfolio management or investment analysis, but also prepares you for the Level 1 examination of the international Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA ) qualification. Public and Development Management A thorough knowledge of public and development management is essential preparation for various careers in the public sector, and in the voluntary, developmental, business and media sectors. Possible careers within these sectors include those of general manager or chief executive officer, strategic manager, project and programme manager, development planner, development manager, community developer, or policy and management research specialist and management consultant. FOCAL AREAS 1.2 BCom (Management Sciences) This is the programme for students who wish to pursue a career in management. Although it offers broad and open-ended choices of modules, it also allows you to focus on a specific area of study. For these focal areas there are recommended combinations of modules. Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management This focal area motivates and orients students to enter the exciting world of entrepreneurship by considering a future business or practice of their own, or to make creative contributions towards the success of other established enterprises. Financial Management With this focal area you will develop a sound knowledge of financial management, which is essential for the success of a business. Careers include working as an investment analyst, financial manager or financial adviser. Human Resource Management This focal area prepares you for a career as a personnel manager, market researcher, training manager, consultant or labour relations manager. Information Systems Management In this focal area, students learn how to integrate rapidly developing knowledge technologies with organisational strategy in order to enhance productivity, efficiency and (sometimes) innovation. Logistics Management This focal area positions you for a career as logistics manager who plans and controls the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information from the place of origin to the place of consumption. Marketing Management Marketing focuses on activities such as product decisions, price determination, distribution, advertising and creating awareness of products/services. Possible careers include marketing, sales, client manager or advertising manager. Quantitative Management This focal area will position you, after sufficient practical experience, to analyse and manage business functions and processes at strategic, tactical and operational levels.

FOCAL AREAS 1.3 BCom (Economic Sciences) This programme focuses almost exclusively on fields of study in economics. Because of the importance of statistics for the development of high-level economic analysis, statistics or mathematical statistics up to second-year level is required for this programme. Econometrics Graduates with an aptitude for, and training in, economics, mathematics and statistics can opt for employment as econometricians in the financial or public sector, or at a research institution. Economic and Management Consultation The module combination of this focal area is aimed at people who wish to qualify as economic or management consultants. A good knowledge of economics is combined with broad exposure to commercial and management subjects such as mercantile law and industrial psychology, providing you with the necessary background to make business-related recommendations covering a broad spectrum of fields. Financial Sector In the financial sector, qualified persons with this module combination will typically be employed as economic or financial analysts. Another career option includes economic or management consultancy. Transport Economics Transport economists plan and manage transport infrastructure, the formulation of transport policy and the control of transport systems for public enterprises and transport organisations. FOCAL AREAS 1.4 BCom (Mathematical Sciences) This programme has a sharper focus on mathematics and mathematical statistics, both of which are compulsory till second-year level. Computer Science This focal area equips you with a broad knowledge of both computer science and the business world, and will enable you to become a successful programmer in any environment. Applying information technology in the business world is crucial to managing organisations effectively and productively. Financial Risk Management People with training in financial risk management, mathematical statistics and financial mathematics are appointed by large financial institutions as financial and quantitative analysts, financial risk managers, portfolio managers and financial traders. Mathematical Statistics Mathematical-statistical theory and procedures, together with the accompanying computer skills, are in great demand in the national and international corporate, research and public sectors. Careers include statisticians, data-mining experts, data managers, and statistical analysts. Operations Research This practice-oriented focal area trains you to find mathematically-based solutions for problems that have a high degree of complexity, uncertainty and conflict in business enterprises, including factories, banks, and mining and agricultural sector enterprises. 1.5 BCom (International Business) This four-year selection programme is a pioneer in undergraduate business education!
