Give Your Kids an Academic Edge Edmonton Public Schools Metro Continuing Education has been helping students achieve their educational goals for over 100 years. Metro's Summer Cool School for grades 1-9 combines fun-filled camps with academic classes. Customize a one, two or three week schedule with half-day or full-day programs and give your kids an ultimate summer experience that supports skill development. Pre-Camp & Early drop-off is available between 8:00-8:45 am for $8 per week. Late pick-up is available between 3:45-5:00 pm for $12 per week. Students will be supervised in a safe environment and can work on class materials or bring their own activity. The Metro Advantage Small class sizes Academic classes based on Alberta curriculum Classes & Camps taught by trained instructors Affordable weekly fees Customized schedule of 1-3 weeks Academic Classes Metro s academic classes (language arts and math) are designed to support student achievement. Students can review difficult concepts or preview concepts for the next grade-level. Through guided instruction and hands-on activities, students will enhance their skills and achieve a better understanding of grade-specific concepts. Classes are based on Alberta curriculum and are taught by trained instructors. Customize a schedule of one, two or three weeks; however, different material is covered each week and to receive a full review/preview of main concepts, students must participate in all three weeks (parts A, B & C). Academic Success Programs Summer Cool School Published March 2017 Up-to-the-minute information and registration is available at: metrocontinuingeducation.ca Academic Support Grades 1-3 This morning or afternoon block will focus on developing students' skills and solidifying a strong foundation for future academic success. Students will benefit from a relaxed learning environment where games and alternative learning activities may be incorporated to augment learning. A typical half-day block will include approximately one hour dedicated to Math, one hour dedicated to Language Arts and one hour dedicated to alternative learning activities. Academic Support Grades 4-6 This block will focus on ensuring each student continues to develop their understanding of academic concepts. An assortment of language arts themes will reinforce effective communication and reading skills while math assignments will stimulate strategic thinking and reasoning skills. Students at D.S. MacKenzie will choose from distinct subject blocks while students at Londonderry will be exposed to a half day of math, language arts and alternative learning activities. Academic Support Grades 7-9 This block will focus on reinforcing key concepts and strengthening study skills to ensure future success as students prepare for high school curriculum. Sports & Adventure Camps Elementary Camps Grades 1-3 Daytime Adventures #1 and #2 (D.S. MacKenzie location) Daytime Adventures is ideal for the student who wants to try a bit of everything this summer! Students will participate in a variety of fun enrichment activities in this half day camp. Activities include visual arts, performing arts, culinary arts, science, sports and public speaking. Grades 1-3 and 4-6 Daytime Adventures #3 and #4 (Londonderry location) Experience an exciting assortment of activities with this camp sampler option. Visual arts, performing arts, culinary arts and sports activities will be included in this fun half day adventure camp. Daytime Adventures is the perfect opportunity to explore a variety of interests and discover a new favourite hobby! Grades 4-6 Drama Games (D.S. MacKenzie location) Have a little actor in the family? This acting course will introduce students to several parts of drama including mime, storytelling, improvisation and movement through fun and exciting drama games and exercises. (D.S. MacKenzie location) Students will experience the thrill of science. Through hands-on experiments and demonstrations, students will have a new adventure each week. Mighty Robots (D.S. MacKenzie location) With Mighty Robots, students will bring their imaginations to life! Using LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits, campers will be guided step-by-step in the design and programming process to build their very own robots. (D.S. MacKenzie location) Public speaking isn t easy! In a safe, supportive environment students will learn how to speak confidently in front of classmates and discover practical tips for making public speaking less terrifying. Junior High Camps Grades 7-9 STEAM Camp (Londonderry location) At a STEAM camp you do not just learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, you experience it! The camp will promote critical thinking, creativity and teamwork. Guitar (Londonderry location) In this camp, students will be exposed to the fundamentals of guitar techniques including melodic playing and chording. Whether students are beginners or entering with some musical experience, they are sure to learn new skills and concepts in a fun and active environment. Sports Sampler Camps (Londonderry location) This camp will expose students to a variety of sports. The emphasis will be on fun, but students will also gain sportspecific skills while improving their overall physical fitness. This is an excellent camp for students with energy to burn. Discover Acting (Londonderry and D.S. MacKenzie location) Whether they want to see their name in lights or just make new friends, Discover Acting will deliver a week of fun! Students will explore acting through drama improvisation games, storytelling and character. They will also work together as a group to create a short performance piece for family and friends which will include set design and theatre lights. Robotics (D.S. MacKenzie location) Using LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits, students will build an intelligent robot and program it to perform on-command operations, like moving and turning. Participants will also collaborate with others in a team-based challenge to create the ultimate bot! Sports Camps (D.S. MacKenzie location) Students can choose from basketball (week 1), volleyball (week 2) or soccer (week 3) camps and enjoy some summer fun while enhancing their skills, learning rules of the game and developing their teamwork skills. Sports and Games (D.S. MacKenzie location) The focus is on fun! Students will sample a wide range of activities as they develop their teamwork and sportsmanship skills. All Sports & Adventure Camps aim to offer students new experiences each week; however, there may be some repetition for students taking the same camp for multiple weeks. English Language Learning ELL Class Students can accelerate their English skills this summer with full-immersion English Language Learning (ELL) classes. Students will enhance their skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. ELL students may find it beneficial to partake in Sports and Adventure camps for part of the day to practise their English skills. 1
