ACADEMIC MATTERS COUNCIL Sen. Doc. No. 17-044 The Department of Languages, Literature, and Cultures is proposing to revise the requirements for its BA program in Comparative Literature. The major has several different subplans, each of which currently requires 15 credits (= 5 courses) at the 200-level and above in Comparative Literature. The subplans have varying requirements for additional courses in other areas such as major literature, minor literature, third language or literature, and related disciplines. Under the proposed revisions, 6 courses would be required in Comparative Literature for each subplan, with at least 5 of those courses at the 200-level or above. There is a corresponding reduction by 1 course in the requirements for one other area in the subplan. Hence, the total of number required courses and the minimum number of required upper-level courses in Comparative Literature are unchanged under the proposal. The main reason for the proposed revision is to give students a stronger grounding in comparative methodologies. At its meeting on January 18, 2017, the Academic Matters Council voted unanimously to recommend Faculty Senate approval of the proposed Revision of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Program in Comparative Literature. It was submitted as Proposal #3345 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. ACADEMIC PRIORITIES COUNCIL On February 24, 2017, the Academic Priorities Council endorsed approval of this proposal #3345. PROGRAM AND BUDGET COUNCIL The proposed changes seek to help ensure that students have a stronger grounding in comparative methodologies and approaches. The new requirement is for 6 courses in COMP- LIT instead of 15 credits. To accommodate this, students will be allowed to count one 100-level course towards the major. This change increases the coherence of this undergraduate program. There is no cost or requested resources associated with this proposal. At its meeting on February 15, 2017, the Program and Budget Council unanimously approved the Revision of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Program in Comparative Literature, submitted as proposal #3345 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. MOTION: That the Faculty Senate approve the Revision of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) 24-17 Program in Comparative Literature, as presented in Sen. Doc. No. 17-044.

Briefly describe the proposal. Sen. Doc. No. 17-044 In 2015-16, the Undergraduate Studies Committee undertook a comprehensive review of the Comparative Literature major that included comparisons with peer universities. We concluded that the overall structure of our major, particularly in its interdisciplinarity and flexibility, is quite sound and consonant with the aims of the program. However, we agreed that a slight redistribution of credits within the major would help to ensure that our graduates have a stronger grounding in comparative methodologies and approaches. We, therefore, bring forward the following proposal. 1) Requiring 6 courses in Comparative Literature instead of 15 credits (or 5 courses, as most upperlevel courses carry 3 credits). 2) To accommodate (1), we propose reducing the requirement in one other component of the major, usually the Minor Literature, by 3-credit hours/1 course. The accompanying table shows which component of the major would be changed for each track. Thus, students would still take the same number of courses to complete the major. See Table 1, attached. 3) Allowing students to count one 100-level course towards the major. a. Currently, students may count one 200-level course; under the revised major, we would allow 1 100-level and 1 200-level course or 2 200-level courses to count towards the major. b. We propose making this change for two reasons. First, an introductory course in comparative approaches to literature and/or media is useful for many of our new students; second, many of our majors are recruited in the 100-level courses, and it would advantageous to be able to count this course towards the major. Because we are adding to the total number of courses required in Comp Lit, this will not reduce the number of upper-level courses that students must take in the program. Should this revision be approved, currently enrolled Comparative Literature majors would have the option of either switching to the newly revised version of the major or continuing to follow the current major curriculum. Please describe the existing program requirements, listing all required courses and available electives, as well as any additional requirements, and continuation or admissions policies. Comparative Literature currently has four subplans, with requirements as stated below. (See also Table 1 in the supporting document for a direct comparison between our existing and proposed requirements for each subplan.) General Lang/Lit Upper-level in Comp Lit 15 hours (= 5 3-cr. courses) Upper-level in major lit 12 hours (= 4 courses) Upper-level in minor lit 12 hours (= 4 courses) Total 39 hours (= 13 courses) Adv. Upper-level in minor lit 6 hours (= 2 courses) Upper-level in 3rd lit 6 hours (= 2 courses) Total 39 hours (= 13 courses) Sen. Doc. No. 17-044 Lit & Related Discipline Upper-level in Comp Lit 15 hours (= 5 3-cr. courses) Upper-level in major lit 12 hours (= 4 courses) Upper-level in minor lit 6 hours (= 2 courses) Upper-level in related disc. 12 hours (= 4 courses) Total 45 hours (= 15 courses) Please describe the requirements that you are proposing, listing course requirements, elective options, as well as any additional requirements, and continuation or admissions policies. The new requirements for each subplan would be as follows: General Lang/Lit Upper-level in Comp Lit 6 courses Upper-level in major lit 4 courses (12 hours) Upper-level in minor lit 3 courses (9 hours) Total 13 courses Adv. Lang-Lit (a) Upper-level in Comp Lit 6 courses Upper-level in major lit 4 courses (12 hours) Upper-level in minor lit 2 courses (6 hours) Elementary in 3rd lang 2 courses (6 hours) Total 14 courses Adv. Lang-Lit (b) Upper-level in Comp Lit 6 courses Upper-level in major lit 3 courses (9 hours) Upper-level in minor lit 2 courses (6 hours) Upper-level in 3rd lit 2 courses (6 hours) Total 13 courses Lit & Related Discipline Upper-level in Comp Lit 6 courses Upper-level in major lit 3 courses (9 hours) Upper-level in minor lit 2 courses (6 hours) Upper-level in related disc. 4 courses (12 hours) Total 15 courses In addition, students would be able to count one 100-level course towards the major. Please provide the rationale for these revisions. As noted above, we have determined that our students would benefit from a stronger grounding in comparative methodologies. A second reason is that this change would create a greater sense of cohesiveness among our majors. Because Comparative Literature is so interdisciplinary, with students taking a majority of their major courses outside of their home unit, increasing the number of courses that they take in Comparative Literature proper would give them a greater sense of identity, as well as increasing the coherence of their undergraduate program and enabling them to learn more from each other.

Resources: If this proposal requires no additional resources, say so and briefly explain why. If this proposal requires additional resources, explain how they will be paid for.
