Three Ring Binder (for portfolio) **Students are required to watch the How to Get Started in MLP and the tutorial on How to Enter Answers in MLP. Both will be emailed to you and there will also be links in MyLabsPlus Class Regulations: 1. Arrive to class on time. If you must leave early, inform me before class begins. 2. Be prepared to answer questions in class, actively learn, participate in groups and work problems. 3. Show work, including all steps to demonstrate that you know the material. Answers only are not sufficient when steps are needed. 4. Communicate with the instructor. (Ask questions, use e-mail, phone message) 5. Turn off cell phones before entering classroom (at least on silent or vibrate). 6. Talking that interferes with student/teacher interaction is not acceptable and you will be asked to leave the classroom. Remember: The instructor has the right to teach and your classmates have paid to learn. 7. Cheating will result in a zero grade for all individuals involved or may result in removal from the class or campus as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct (Policy Number 589). Copying answers without attempting the work is considered cheating! 8. Turn in all work on time by midnight of the assigned due date. 9. Late exams will result in a zero and cannot be made up. Your semester grade will be assigned based on the following scale: The grading scale is: 90-100 A; 80-89 B, 70-79 C; 60-69 D, below 60 F

Grades: Your semester grade will be calculated based on the following weighted categories Homework (MLP and in-class group work) 15% Tests 70% Quizzes 5% Portfolio 10% Homework (15%) There will be homework assigned for each section we cover. The group work done in class will also count towards your homework grade; therefore it is imperative that you come to class. The homework for the sections that are covered that week are due every Monday at midnight. Homework scores will be penalized by a 50% reduction in grade after the assigned due date. If you know you have a conflict with a due date, you must let me know ahead of time. Check the due dates in the schedule to make sure you complete them in a timely manner. Homework is the opportunity to practice and make mistakes. I cannot stress enough the importance of completing homework assignments. For every credit hour earned for the course, the student will spend at least two hours outside of class working on coursework. Tests (70%) There will be four exams throughout the semester. The exams will be: Ch 2, Midterm, Ch 11 and the final exam. See the schedule for the dates of each exam. All tests are proctored and must be taken at an approved testing center. Quizzes (10%): There will be thirteen quizzes total throughout the semester. The quizzes will be open all week and are due by midnight on Monday. Please see the schedule for due dates. The quizzes are taken in MLP and cannot be made up. Portfolio (10%): Students will be required to complete a portfolio with real-life application projects throughout the course. Specific information on each project will be provided. At CAC plagiarism is treated as a dishonest action, an issue of dishonorable behavior. Withdrawal Policy: If the student needs to withdraw from the course, they can withdraw without instructor approval up to the 45 day count. However, after the 45 day count, the student needs the instructor s signature and the withdraw process has to be done by October 25th. Commitment: A commitment is needed from you in order to succeed in this course: 1. You must make a commitment to get help when needed. 2. You must make a commitment to daily work. 3. You must make a time commitment. For every hour spent in class, you should spend two hours studying. If you are not able to make these commitments, you should drop the course. Math Answer Rubric This rubric is applied toward content exam questions, and adjusted for actual point value of the item. 4 pts Response contains effective solution. It shows complete understanding of the concept or task and thoroughly addresses the points relevant to the solution. It contains logical reasoning and valid conclusions, communicates effectively and clearly through writing and/or diagrams, and includes adequate and correct computations and/or set up when required. It may go beyond the requirements of the item. 3 pts Response contains minor flaws. Although it indicates an understanding of the concept or item, communicates adequately through writing and/or diagrams, and generally reaches reasonable conclusions, it contains minor flaws in reasoning and/or computation, or neglects to address some aspect of the item. 2 pts Response indicates gaps in understanding and/or execution. It contains some combination of the following flaws: an incomplete understanding of the concept or item, failure to address some points relevant to the solution, faulty reasoning, weak conclusions, unclear communication in writing and/or diagrams, or a poor understanding of relevant mathematical procedures or concepts. 1 pt Response indicates some effort beyond restating the item or copying given data. MAT 141 Learning Outcomes Learning Outcome 1. Use technology to assist in problem solving. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of basic set theory Standard(s) 1. The students will use calculators (scientific and graphing) and available computer software to model, investigate, solve and justify solutions to given problems. 3. Given a description of a set, the student will state a member of the set, state a member not contained in the set and express the set in set-builder notation. 3. Given two or more sets, the student will state the union and intersection of the sets and represent the set intersection and union in a Venn diagram. 6. The student will apply the concepts of counting, factorials, permutations and combinations to calculate the theoretical and experimental probability of an event occurring. 5.
