2010 Doctoral Training Grants Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs) are 4-year awards aimed at giving flexibility to Research Organisations to allocate funding for PhD. The eligibility of a Research Organisation to receive a DTG is determined by the value of its MRC Grant and Fellowship awards: Research Organisations whose awards equate to more than an MRC-set threshold (notionally 3 x 3.5-year studentships) when calculated by algorithm are eligible to receive an automatic DTG for 2 years Research Organisations whose awards equate to less than the MRC-set threshold but are greater than the value of 50% of 1 x 3.5 year studentship are eligible to apply for a 2-year DTG award via competition. Research Organisations whose awards equate to less than the value of 50% of a 3.5 year studentship are not eligible for a Doctoral Training Grant for the subsequent 2 years. Research Organisations in receipt of Automatic Doctoral Training Grants to commence in 2010 and 2011 are: Cardiff University Imperial College King s College Newcastle University Queen Mary, The Manchester University College Birmingham Bristol Cambridge Dundee Edinburgh Liverpool Nottingham Oxford Sheffield Sussex Research Organisations in receipt of Doctoral Training Grants via competition to commence in 2010 and 2011 are: Institute of Cancer Research Aberdeen The Babraham Institute Bath Glasgow Leicester St Andrews Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute - 3 -

Capacity Building Awards The MRC Capacity Building Scheme aims to provide sustained funding to UK Research Organisations within priority areas in Biological and Medical Science. The priority areas for the competition for awards to start in 2009 and 2010 were skillsbased, responding to unmet national need highlighted by MRC s Research Boards and Training Panels, as well as advisory groups and partner organisations. Awards to start in October 2010 were made to the following Research Organisations: In Vivo Sciences Basic and/or translational research with a significant component of advanced in vivo whole animal methods and models Organisation Name Primary Contact Number of Bristol Prof Richard Apps 6 4-Year Cambridge Prof William Harris 6 1+3 Year Edinburgh Prof David Gray 2 1+3 Year Glasgow Prof Margaret MacLean 3 1+3 Year Imperial College Prof Julia Buckingham 4 1+3 Year Imperial College /King s College Prof Nick Long 1 1+3 Year Liverpool Dr Jonathan Jarvis 2 1+3 Year Oxford Prof Leonard Seymour 3 4-Year Queen Mary, Prof Adrian Clark 2 1+3 Year - 4 -

Advanced Course Masters Awards The MRC Advanced Course Masters Scheme aims to assist universities to make a significant impact on unmet national need for early research training in advanced biomedical and health research skills. The priorities for the competition mirrored the Capacity Building Scheme with an emphasis on providing early research training skills. Awards to start in October 2010 and October 2011 were made to the following Research Organisations: Biological and Medical Imaging Training in a range of advanced imaging research methods relevant to human health and disease, such as imaging physics, radiochemistry and tracer development, biomarker characterisation, data acquisition, computation and analysis.
