FAMILY READING ADVENTURES Don t miss out on the fun! Join your students on a reading adventure with myon. Here are a few activities that will help kick-start a family journey: A D V N E T U R E DVENTURE GUIDE Tell your student about one of your favorite adventures you have been on. Where did you go? What did you see? Why were you there? Next step is to look up different myon books to learn more about that place that you went and the things you saw! ESIGNATE Designate an area in your house for a reading corner! Set up a fort specifically meant for reading with your child! Create a sign to hang on the fort Readers ONLY Past This Point! ISIT Travel to a park, zoo, mall, etc. and create a story with a great adventure where your student is the main character and you are along for the ride. When you are done creating your great adventure, look up books about the subject that you are your student can read together. AT Ask your child where they would like to travel in the world. Set up a dinner with the food shared in that area and research more about the climate, culture, animals, etc. that live in the area of the world of their choice. EW HOBBY Start a new hobby with your child. Whether it be cooking or playing the piano, to hiking or collecting baseball cards, there is a myon book that will help you along the way! Learn more about that hobby on myon! RACK Track your student s progress. Ask them to explain what is on his/her reading dashboard, what their Lexile level is and where they want it to be in the future. NDERSTAND Reading outside of school is of the upmost importance for your student to enhance learning growth. Try to set aside 20 minutes a day to read with your student. EWARD Set reading goals and reward your kids when they accomplish these goals with fun family activities! A trip to a waterpark, a picnic with lunch of their choice, family trip to the beach, etc. XAMPLE Lead by example! You students look up to you and want to emulate your actions. So if you set a good example by reading, they will want to as well! Other Ideas: Alternative Ending: Before you finish reading a book with your children, write what you think should happen in the end and compare it to what actually happens. Picture This!: Have your children take pictures and write stories about the pictures. Create a storyline based on different locations. Read to an Audience: Reading to an audience is fun! Have young children read aloud to their stuffed animals, siblings, or you. Choose a scene from the book and act it out. Starring: Talk about the book you are reading. If you were the main character in the story, would you make the same choices as the protagonist? Reminisce: What was your favorite story when you were your student s age? Can you find that book on myon? Is there a tale of similar story line? Book Review: Create a personal book review. Know what your student is reading and ask your child if they enjoyed the book and what their favorite parts were. Ask them if there were parts of the book that they did not like and what they would change about it. Weekly Check-In: Smaller reading goals will help your student obtain their larger goals and dreams. Break their reading goals into small, attainable portions and check in each week what they did to get to those goals. Family Night: Establish your very own family night read-in. Set aside designated time for family reading where the entire family reads. Alternative Ending: Before you finish reading a book with your children, write what you think should happen in the end and compare it to what actually happens. Travel with myon: Have a way to read on myon on the go. That way, when you are in the car, waiting in the doctor s office, or on a trip they don t have to be bored, they can read! Reward Reading: Reward you re your kids for reading with fun family activities! A trip to a waterpark, a picnic with lunch of their choice, family trip to the beach, etc. Get Cozy: Cuddle up and read to kids every night before going to bed. www.myon.com @myonreader @myonnews #myonadventures
