About The Centre for Nano-Technology (CNT) has been established to carry out focused research on cutting edge areas in Nano-Science and Nano-Technology. The Nano Mission, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has sanctioned financial grant of Rs. 1.86 crores for research project titled Characterization of Composite Materials and Application of Nanomaterials for Sustainable Energy. Vision Group on Science and Technology of Govt. of Karnataka has also sanctioned a research grant of Rs 60-lakh under Centres of Excellence in Science, Engineering and Medicine (CESEM) to carryout research on Development of CIGS-based Nanomaterials for Photovoltaics is a multidisciplinary research centre, which has brought together Physical, Chemical and Mechanical Sciences. The primary objective of CNT is to characterize structural and mechanical properties of nano composites for sustainable energy applications. Further, the Centre aims at being in the forefront of the Nano-Technology. It also provides state-of-the-art facilities to researchers so that the non-availability of these equipment at their institutes should not desist them from pursuing their research activities.
Course Introduction: The Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE has started an M.Tech programme in Nano Technology from the academic year 2014-15. The M.Tech programme has a great potential in terms of technology wherein its scope extends to almost every field. It is a course having multidisciplinary approach with contemporary course work and curriculum and aims to provide best in class teaching & training at PG level in the field of Nano Technology. The major strength of the programme is the capable and experienced faculty having rich research experience. Class room teaching is supplemented by laboratory training on sophisticated scientific equipment.
Objectives of the Programme: To help the students to understand the behavior of materials at the nano scale, study their properties and also be able to bring out innovative products using this cutting edge technology. The curriculum has been designed in consultation with expert academicians, industry experts and researchers keeping in pace with the present technological developments and industry needs. The program is conducted by well-versed dedicated and highly experienced faculty, invited experts from reputed institutions and industries of the country.
Course Outline Degree: M. Tech, in Nano-Technology Duration: Two Years (4 Semesters, last semester is for project work) No. Seats: 24 seats Eligibility Criteria: B.E./B.Tech. or Equivalent in Biotechnology, Bio-medical, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Electronics & Communication, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Medical Electronics, Polymer Science, Silk Technology, Telecommunications and Textiles All students have to do a substantial research type project during their study period. Projects are generally based on one of the Nanoscience/technology research groups and involve a structured experimental investigation of a research or development nature.

Indo -Canadian Symposium on Nano-Science and Technology The first Indo-Canadian Symposium on Nano-Science and Technology was jointly organized by NIE, Mysore and McMaster University, Canada on February 20 and 21, 2013 under the aegis of TEQIP, a World Bank-MHRD initiative. The primary objective of this symposium was to provide a platform for the participants from academia, research organizations and industry, who are actively involved in research on Nano-Science and Technology. The focus was on to foster research initiatives and find global partners for future collaboration. Contributed research papers covered fundamental aspects of Nano-Science and Technology, which were based on application oriented research and development. The response for the ICSNST 13 was overwhelming. In all, around 100 research papers were received for oral and poster presentation. Thirty five faculty members from different science colleges across Karnataka, twenty five students from post graduate and undergraduate courses and 10 researchers from various other institutions participated in the symposium.
