The right standards True to the details and intent of the For years, studies such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) have shown that students in the U.S. lag behind other countries in Mathematics. To address this achievement gap, researchers have recommended that the U.S. switch from a mile-wide inch-deep curriculum, which devotes less time per topic, to curriculum that has focus and coherent progressions. High performing countries use this model, which entails taking the time to lay a strong foundation, and then building knowledge on top of that foundation. The U.S. has now officially made that shift focus and coherence are the two major evidence-based design principles of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Focus and Coherence in Ready Mathematics Because the Ready program was built from the ground up with no repurposed content, it is a coherent K 8 curriculum linked across the grades. Each lesson specifically reflects the same focus as the Common Core Mathematics Standards. In fact, the majority of the lessons in each grade directly address the major focus of the year. Plus, there is at least one lesson for each standard. Focus and Coherence in Ready Mathematics The units in the Ready books are organized by domains following the cluster headings of the Common Core. Each lesson starts by referencing prior knowledge and making connections to what students already know, particularly reinforcing algebraic thinking and problem solving. These connections are highlighted for teachers in the Learning Progressions of the Teacher Resource Book so teachers can see at a glance how the lesson connects to previous and future learning.
