BHU CENTENARY YEAR CELEBRATION Banaras Hindu University is the first residential teaching University of India, built through public donation collected by Bharat Ratna Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviyaji. BHU is also the first example of Community participation in higher education in India. This great seat of learning not only synergized Indian traditions with modern values and Indian wisdom with western knowledge but also became a site for nourishing the holistic vision of Nationalism and Universal Values. We feel happy to learn that Malaviyaji s dream child, BHU has moved from strength to strength and is soon completing 100 glorious years. Malaviya Mission planned to celebrate the Centenary year of BHU from Foundation Day (Basant Panchmi) 2016, arranging inaugural function in Varanasi and will conclude on Malviya Jayanti arranging International BHU Alumni Meet and an Internal Seminar in Delhi. Malvinas Mission have already arranged some programms related to Centenary Year Celebration. Mahamana Bharat Ratna Samman Samaroh, recently arranged on 24 th May 2015 in Lucknow is one of them. INTERNATIONAL BHU ALUMNI MEET: 2016 BACKGROUND
The Idea of organizing an International BHU Alumni meet was conceptualized in the year 2000. It was born as a result of the need to provide a common platform and meeting ground for the vast number of the BHU family spread throughout the world. It was felt that they should meet at least once a year nationally and once in three years internationally in order to strengthen their links with each other and to express their solidarity with their Alma Mater. The 1 st International BHU Alumni Meet was held in the year 2001 in IIT New Delhi and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister ShriAtal Bihari VajpaiJi. Our Alumni participated not only actively, but contributed significant financial resources which enabled us to undertake the construction of the Mahamana Malaviya Memorial at New Delhi. The 2 nd International Meet was held in 2004 at IIT Mumbai and was inaugurated by Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission. Once again our Alumni not only congregated in large numbers, but also donated generously in affinity with their Alma Mater. Both these meets were able to generate immense enthusiasm and were instrumental in further strengthening the sense of brotherhood and commitment, which characterize every member of the BHU family. The 3 rd International Meet was held in BHU in association of Mahamana Malviya Mission on January 6-7, 2007 in the same spirit at the Karmasthali of Mahamanaji-the BHU campus itself. This had strengthened the link of the past with the present and provided our alumni an opportunity to revisit the campus and renew their commitment to the overall growth of this great Institution. The 4th and 5 th International BHU Alumni Meet was arranged on 25 th to 27 th December 2009 & 23 24 July December 2012respectively again at Campus of Banaras
Hindu University. The 5 th International Meet was planned as part of the concluding function of the year long celebrations initiated to commemorate the 150 th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Madan Mohan Malaviya. Conferring of Bharat Ratna on Mahamana has already added a charm to the occasion to the occasion. THE SEMINAR: OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE Bharat Ratna Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviyaji in his pamphlet titled Banaras Hindu University why it is wanted and what it aims at released in July, 1911, stated It is proposed that the College of Science and Technology should be the first college to be established by the University. In the present economic condition of India, there is no branch of education for which there is greater need than scientific and technical instruction. Malaviyaji was so much concerned with India s poverty that he remarked Midas starving amid heaps of gold India starving in the midst of untold wealth. Banaras Hindu University is embodiment of his dream which he nurtured right from his young age. Thanks to his vision and foresight that the degree awarding education in electrical and mechanical, mining, metallurgy, ceramics and pharmaceutics started for the first time in the country at the Banaras Hindu University. It was Malaviyaji s vision and untiring efforts which finally led to the enactment of the Banaras Hindu University Act which received the assent of the Governor General on October 01, 1915. The objectives of the establishment of Banaras Hindu University clearly states. To advance and diffuse such scientific, technical and professional knowledge combined with the necessary practical training as is best calculated to help in promoting indigenous industries and in developing the material resources of the country. Objectives of the Seminar would be to examine the great contribution of our Alma Mater and genius it produced during its glorious 100 years in the progress of our Mother land. Let the following words of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya about BHU and its students be the guiding force for all the alumni of this Great University. It is my earnest hope and prayers that this centre of life and light which is coming into existence, will produce students who will not only be intellectually equal to the best of their fellow students in other parts of the world, but will also live a noble life, love their country and be loyal to the Supreme Ruler.
