Program Student Overview Book Ready Readers Ready Readers is a scientifically research-based program that will help provide effective literacy instruction in your classroom. As students read the diverse collection of books and participate in an array of classroom activities designed to help them develop their reading and writing skills, they will strengthen fundamental reading skills, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Essential Reading Components Phonemic Awareness Phonics Fluency Vocabulary Comprehension Ready Readers Instruction Books in the early stages of the Ready Readers program use single-word labels to introduce phonemic awareness and letter recognition skills. As the texts begin to use repetition and memorable two-word phrases, students discover that sounds and letters can be manipulated to change the meaning of words. As students progress through the early stages of the Ready Readers program, the use of memorable and repetitive language patterns helps them begin to develop an understanding of sound-letter correspondences. Specially designed provide a strong base for fluent reading through experiences with systematic phonics instruction and high-frequency words, helping children to develop word recognition skills and automaticity. Audio CDs provide models of effective, fluent reading behavior. provide opportunities for children to strengthen their word banks, develop background knowledge, and build thematic understanding. Teaching Plans provide strategies for predicting, inferencing, and summarizing. Repeated readings, discussions, and writing activities access key story concepts. Pearson Ready Readers Sampler 3

Organized to support young readers every step of the way. Ready Readers at a Glance! Ready Readers helps students become good readers by providing a collection of 355 that are organized into eight stages. Each stage is more difficult than the previous, with book length gradually increasing from 8 to 24 pages. A variety of genres are represented, including fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. Ready Readers Stage Characteristics STAGE ABC EMERGENT 55 STAGE 0 EMERGENT 50 Language Patterns Single-word labels emphasize letter recognition and introduce phonemic awareness. Repetition of memorable two-word phrases reinforces phonemic awareness. Language patterns are repetitive with one-word substitutions. Illustrations Exact picture/text match. Strong picture/text match. STAGE 0/1 EMERGENT 50 STAGE 1 EMERGENT 50 Language patterns are memorable and repetitive, progressing from one-word to two-word substitutions. Language patterns are memorable and repetitive with a minimum of word change. Strong picture/text match. Illustrations strongly support text. STAGE 2 EARLY 50 Language patterns are memorable and repetitive as in Stage 1, but have more variation. Picture/text match gradually decreases STAGE 3 EARLY 40 STAGE 4 FLUENT 30 STAGE 5 FLUENT 30 Books exhibit a great deal of variation in sentence patterns. Variations in sentence patterns continue with less dependence on repetition. The sequence of events in the stories is longer, and the events are fully developed. Illustrations provide moderate support to the meaning of the stories. Illustrations continue to provide support for the overall meaning of the story. Illustrations help to create and portray an atmosphere. 4 Pearson Ready Readers Sampler

Program Student Overview Book The skill development reflected in Ready Readers addresses the domains of reading, beginning with phonemic awareness. The program fosters the sequential development of early phonics skills and serves as a base for early fluency as students build a bank of words they recognize easily and quickly. Language Style and Syntax Story Structure Word Study Components of reading instruction Each book depicts concrete objects and everyday situations common to emergent readers. Books are short and text is limited to labels, two-word phrases, and single sentences that depict familiar objects and experiences connected by a simple storyline. Word study focus is on letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and discrimination of sounds. Phonemic awareness, letter recognition Each book represents familiar objects and experiences common to beginning readers, while the syntax reflects young children s speech. Sentences and books are short, events are completed on one page, and text appears in the same place within each book. Word study focus is on letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and discrimination of sounds. Early phonics Each book represents experiences common to beginning readers, while the syntax reflects young children s speech. Sentences and books are short, events are completed on one page, and text appears in the same place within each book. Word study focus is on consonants and rhyming phonograms. Early phonics Each book represents experiences common to beginning readers, while the syntax reflects young children s speech. Sentences and books are short, events are completed on one page, and text appears in the same place within each book. Word study focus is on consonants and both rhyming and non-rhyming phonograms. Early phonics Books continue to represent common experiences with the syntax reflecting written as well as oral language. Sentences become more complex, though events continue to be completed on one page of text. Word study focus is on consonants and phonograms. Phonics, fluency, comprehension A written style of language becomes more prominent. Sentence length increases, events continue over several pages, and stories become more complex with several characters. Word study focus is on short vowels, long vowels, consonant blends, and digraphs. Phonics, fluency, comprehension Books exhibit conventional written language style. Books use a greater variety of words and a more specialized vocabulary. Word study focus is on inflected endings, compound words, plurals, r-controlled vowels, and long and short vowels. Phonics, fluency, comprehension The vocabulary is rich and varied. Books use a longer sequence of story events and develop them more fully. Level of difficulty increases throughout the stage. Word study focus is on inflected endings, compound words, plurals, r-controlled vowels, and long and short vowels. Phonics, fluency, comprehension Pearson Ready Readers Sampler 5

Scientifically research-based materials promote student literacy. Ready Readers is a scientifically research-based program that will help your students achieve literacy success. Countless teachers will attest to the ease of using Ready Readers in the classroom, and the success of their students speaks to the program s effectiveness. A research study compared two groups of first-grade students during a 15- week period the first group used the Ready Readers program, and the second group of students used basal literature texts. The main effect for treatment was significantly higher for students using Ready Readers in both word reading and text reading. This group improved by 2.8 text levels, and was reading text at level 6 (second grade). The comparison group s improvement was 1.8 text levels, and was reading texts at level 5 (first grade). (Reading Research Quarterly.) PROGRAM AUTHORS Elfrieda (Freddy) H. Hiebert is President and CEO of TextProject, Inc. Dr. Hiebert received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In particular, her interests lie in how fluency, vocabulary, and knowledge can be fostered through appropriate texts. Dr. Hiebert's research has been published in numerous scholarly journals. She has also authored or edited nine books, the most recent of which is Revisiting Silent Reading: New Directions for Teachers and Researchers (International Reading Association; with R. Reutzel). Dr. Hiebert is the 2008 recipient of the William S.
