Ajay Ram has always had a passion for design. After completing a BTEC in Engineering, he joined the Jaguar Land Rover Advanced apprenticeship scheme, knowing that it would help him achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a design engineer. He says: The entire apprenticeship programme is a well-structured scheme which enables me to work towards higher qualifications and gain the skills and knowledge needed to better myself as an engineer. While on the scheme, Ajay has not only managed to learn the basics of engineering but has also been able to make a significant contribution to the company s E-Type project. Making parts for the E-Type project was one of the biggest challenges I have faced. Every dimension had to be precise and no mistakes could be made. By combining logic and innovative ideas, my co-workers and I managed to produce precise car components. One thing that has come as a real surprise to Ajay is the amount of opportunity on offer at Jaguar Land Rover. He explains: As well as all the things I ve been able to achieve in my work, I ve also had the chance to meet with the CEO at a JLR conference in London. I was amazed that apprentices are given these kinds of opportunities.

WHAT S IT LIKE BEING A DEGREE APPRENTICE? A key reason why Alice Roberts decided to join the Jaguar Land Rover apprenticeship scheme was because it would allow her to study for a degree while working towards her apprenticeship. She has recently completed her Foundation Degree in Engineering at Warwickshire College, having simultaneously completed four work placements as a Cost Engineering apprentice. She explains: I think that an apprenticeship offers many advantages over the traditional degree route, such as being able to earn a wage while you learn, receiving training tailored to the role you will have when you finish, and being able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt at university to real-life situations. LIFE AT JLR One way Alice has been able to apply her knowledge during her placements is by producing two training guides covering aluminium stamping processes and brake booster manufacture that can be used by apprentices and new starters within the department. Alice has completed several cost estimates and worked with engineers on alternative powertrain options. On top of all the learning she has done at college and in the work department, Alice has even managed to find time to take advantage of additional training opportunities. I have completed an online course in the Principles of Cost Engineering at Cranfield University, gaining a distinction at 82%. I have also undertaken two courses at the Polymer Training & Innovation Centre to gain an understanding of plastics, blow moulding and injection moulding.

WHAT S IT LIKE BEING A FINANCE & ACCOUNTANCY APPRENTICE Chloe O Rourke is currently in her 2nd year of a Finance Apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover. I have been privileged enough to join Jaguar Land Rover on the Degree Finance & Accountancy Apprenticeship. This was the first time that the automotive company had introduced the programme for A Level leavers, it enables us to have the opportunity to work in industry and become fully qualified, chartered accountants within six years. I am one of the lucky individuals last year to have been given this unique opportunity and already I have learnt so much. I did three A Levels in Textiles, English Language and Business Studies and university never really appealed to me. Therefore, when I saw this vacancy I knew it was the one for me. I put my every effort into ensuring my application and interview reflected my determination and enthusiasm to work for such a successful and rapidly growing company. Being surrounded by passionate and knowledgeable people in the workplace and working with one of the most successful providers of accountancy teaching, I know I am in safe hands to become a success story. There are so many exciting opportunities in the company to get involved in, from innovative projects to supporting charity events, and funding is even provided to learn new skills and experiences you have always dreamed of doing. If you have the chance to be a part of this company you should take it without a doubt, you will not have any regrets! Competitive salaries, pension schemes, job rotation and employee discounts are only some of the perks which prove Jaguar Land Rover are passionate about their employees and want to provide the career of a lifetime, not just a day job.

A: During the finance apprenticeship, over the first 2 years you will work across 4 different finance functions and after that you continue to rotate around the finance function.

Q: If I do not obtain the required qualifications can you keep the offer open for me next year?, provided you expect to Q: Can I choose a different college to attend? A: Unfortunately not. We have all our learning providers in place and you will need to attend the college that is aligned with your application. Q: When do I study for the exams? Q&A A: You will be expected to be in work on days you aren t studying. Engineering apprentices attend college full time for the first year, followed by a number of day releases in subsequent years. Finance apprentices will study on a day release basis. You will be expected to be in your workplace on the days you are not scheduled to attend college. The classes are on a day release basis, usually 5 days spread over 2 weeks. Q: Do I have to study for the degree? A: On the Degree Apprenticeship yes. We believe the degree is an integral part of the program, and it offers the chance to complete a qualification specifically chosen to suit JLR s business needs, as such provides a firm foundation from which you will build your career. 19
