Registration in MyMathLab MATH 120 hybrid FALL 2017 Technology Guide On-line work through MyMathLab **Note that you need to get registered into MyMathLab immediately even if you won t be purchasing the code for a few days. (See below for details.)** 1. Purchase the textbook bundled with the MyMathLab kit (Details in syllabus). You will find a student access code under the pull-tab in your kit. Note: If you have used MyMathLab with this edition of this particular textbook before, you don t need to purchase anything new. Simply login to your account, choose Enroll in a New Course and use the course ID above to place yourself in my gradebook. All the textbook pages, textbook problems, and solution manual pages will be available to you on-line through MyMathLab during the course. Because of this, some students choose to purchase only MyMathLab. This would be YOUR CHOICE. If you wish to do this you can purchase a stand-alone MyMathLab kit from the ARC bookstore OR simply use the Buy Now option when registering for MyMathLab. 2. Go to the website http://www.coursecompass.com and select Student on the right side under the Register Now area. On the next page click OK! Register now. 3. Enter this course ID: messer18095 Course ID: messer18095 4. Choose Create (unless you already have a Pearson account). Fill out the registration form. Note that e-mails I send to you will be sent to the address you type in. (If needed you can get an address at https://apps.losrios.edu/login.html.) 5. Write down your username and password somewhere you can access them easily. When the form is complete, choose Create Account. 6. Choose the correct enrollment option a. Use the access code from the kit that is bundled with the book (or the standalone kit if this is what you chose). Be sure to type it in all capital letters. b. Use the Buy Now option to pay with a credit card or PayPal (if you wish to purchase only MyMathLab on-line) c. Request temporary access (this gives you 14 days to pay for full access). You must have full access within two weeks of the start of class, or you will be unable to complete assignments and may end up dropped for lack of participation. (To upgrade, click on the red message you see when first logging in to the system.) 1

Entering MyMathLab 1. Go to the website http://www.coursecompass.com and select SIGN IN 2. Enter your login and password information. 3. Click on the name of your course and you are in! Overview of MyMathLab menu buttons Here are the buttons you will find on the left side of the main screen: Course Home Class Handouts Quizzes/Exams On-line lesson videos Discussion board posts Homework Gradebook Textbook Resources Study Plan This page always comes up first. If I need to post any important information I will do it here. This is the location where I will post electronic copies of things I hand out in class. If you are absent, click this button to find and download these handouts. Click here to complete a participation quiz (using the password from an on-line office hour) OR to complete a regular quiz OR to complete the small exam on chap. 1. This is where you can find links to instructor-created videos to assist you with the on-line lessons of the course. This is the class discussion board. You will post problems here and view what other students have posted. Click here when you are ready to work on an on-line homework assignment. Choose the assignment you wish to work on and then select the first problem to begin. (More details on homework are found on the following pages.) You can go to the Gradebook to see your individual scores on homework, quizzes, and exams as well as view your overall grade in the class. This area contains the etext, plus additional helps and publisher-provided videos for each section of the book. This area allows you unlimited computer practice from every chapter at any time. The work you do here is not a part of your grade. 2

Tips for Success on the On-Line Homework in MyMathLab: A. Begin working on each assignment as soon as you can. You DON T have to complete it all in one sitting. Just hit the Save button if you need to stop and the next time you can pick up where you left off. B. Each MyMathLab assignment is due by 2:00pm on its due date (see calendar for exact dates). Once the due date and time passes, you can no longer work on that assignment for full credit. C. If the homework assignment is still open after the deadline passes, you can still work on it, but the computer will deduct 5% per day late from your score on problems you work on. At some point the assignment will close completely. WARNING: If you are finished working on a homework assignment, DON T go back and rework any problems after the deadline or the computer will give you a late penalty. D. Work out every problem ON PAPER as you are working through the assignments following the directions given. Label these papers with the section numbers and then file in your notebook so you can use them for studying later. Most of the time only the final answer is entered in the computer. E. If you prefer to look at the actual problems on paper instead of on the screen, you can PRINT OUT an assignment, complete the problems on paper, and then enter in the answers on-line. (This would also provide you with an organized permanent record of your work for study purposes.) You can find the print command in the Question Help area. Remember to hit Save immediately after you print it out to ensure that the numbers in the problems will remain the same. F. Read the directions for each problem carefully. Pay special attention to all instructions about how to enter in your answers. G. Hit Check Answer to see if you got the problem correct. If you didn t, you generally have a couple other attempts to get it right. (Look for the green check marks, which indicate correct answers.) If you ve still gotten it wrong, the correct answer will be shown. To retry the problem for credit, choose Similar Question. Remember that you only receive credit for the problems you eventually get RIGHT, no matter how many tries it takes you. H. Sometimes, the problems I have assigned may not be enough for you to master the material. Even if you have gotten a problem correct, you can work another problem like it by choosing Similar Question. (Choose Save Best Score so that your credit remains unchanged.) 3

I. To move to the next problem, choose Next Question or use the arrows at the top of the window. J. There are NUMEROUS help features in the Question Help area, including Help Me Solve This and View an Example. If you are stuck, please use these aids. Remember that you can also refer to the etext for extra help. K. Sometimes when you first access a problem, a box will pop up with a message from me. If you wish to see the message again later just choose View Instructor Tip from the Question Help area. L. When you put the cursor in the answer box, a keypad containing useful math symbols or math templates may pop up at the bottom of the window. You may need to use one or more of these buttons while you are typing in your answer. M. PRINT OUT (or take a cell phone picture of) any problem you want to ask me about in class. N. To do some extra practice in an old assignment, go to the GRADEBOOK, look up the assignment, and choose REVIEW. You can work similar questions here with no impact on your grade. (You must use the Homework button to complete assignments for credit.) Software glitches do happen! If a particular problem seems flawed, try a similar question. If that still doesn t work, skip it and send me an e-mail about it. (However, if your computer is the problem you will need to contact MyMathLab technical support. It is your responsibility to submit all homework assignments by the computerized due dates computers are available for your use in the LRC and in the library.) Using MyMathLab at home 1. MyMathLab requires the Internet (high speed highly recommended) Check other system requirements by visiting www.mymathlab.com/system.html 2. The first time you use MyMathLab at home you will need to run the Browser Check to set up your computer to run the software. A. Choose the Browser Check link located in the Course Home area. B. Read all the directions carefully and follow the steps listed. (You may need to update your versions of Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader). C. When you finish the entire installation process, you must close your Internet browser and then reopen it and login again. 3. If you run into any problems, you will need to contact MyMathLab technical support at 1-800-677-6337 or 1-844-292-7015 or try the Help & Support link found on the main MML course page. **Note there are occasional times when the primary MyMathLab site goes down. Many times, however, you can still access homework assignments (but not the etext or videos) by using this back door link: www.mathxl.com/login_mml.htm 4

Taking quizzes/exams in MyMathLab: Quizzes and exams are different from homework in that you have to answer ALL the questions BEFORE the computer will check your answers and give you a score. To get the most out of the quizzes and the small exam you should complete them on your own without having any notes or books out. While taking a quiz or exam, use the arrows to move from problem to problem. When you finish answering ALL the questions, hit Submit Quiz or Submit Test at the upper right. Once you do this you will see your score. If you didn't get 100%, you may go back to the quiz or exam and complete it a second time. After you submit the second attempt, the quiz or exam is over and your best score of the two attempts is final. Warning: Hitting the Submit Quiz or Submit Test button is the end of your quiz or exam, whether you are finished or not. Therefore be careful not to hit that button until you are truly finished with the quiz or exam. Note also that the small exam on chapter 1 will have a time limit. (There is no time limit for the quizzes.) Using MyMathLab to obtain participation credit for on-line lessons 1. Participation quizzes Every time I hold an on-line office hour, you will need to complete a participation quiz to verify that you participated live OR watched the recording later. (See the details later in this handout on how to use CCC Confer for on-line office hours.) Note that if you cannot attend the office hour live, you are welcome to e-mail me ahead of time (by 10:00a Friday) with a request for a particular problem you would like me to work out. During the on-line office hour I will share a password that you need to enter in order to complete the participation quiz. (Please do not share the password with other students.) Each participation quiz contains ONE problem only. When you finish the problem, hit "Submit Quiz" at the upper right. Once you do this you will see your score. If 5

you didn't get 100%, you may complete the quiz a second time. After you submit the second attempt, the quiz is over and your best score of the two attempts is final. The score on the participation quiz makes up 1/3 of the participation grade for that lesson. 2. On-line lesson videos Every on-line lesson contains one or more instructor-created videos to help you learn the material. You will watch these videos while filling out the on-line lesson handout I will distribute in class. The videos are housed on YouTube. You will find links to the videos in the Online lesson video button in MyMathLab. The score you receive on the handout (which you will turn in) makes up 1/3 of the participation grade for that lesson. 3. Discussion board posts At the end of every on-line lesson handout you will find a set of practice problems. You should spend about 20 minutes working through these problems after completing the lesson. (You do NOT have to work the problems in order or finish all the practice problems.) At the end of 20 minutes, go into MyMathLab, choose the Discussion board posts button and then choose that week s discussion board. Note that there will be a limit as to how many times a particular problem may be posted. You will need to glance at the posts that have already been made and then choose a problem that hasn t yet been posted the maximum number of times. Be sure that all your work is your own. Copying another student s work will be considered cheating and result in a zero. When I check your posts, I will score your work based on both effort and accuracy. The score you receive makes up 1/3 of the participation grade for that lesson. After you complete your own post, I encourage you to look over the posts of other students on your team or in the class. This will allow you to check your own answers to the practice problems. And it will give you the opportunity to provide helpful feedback to other students if you spot an error in their work or answer. 6

If someone points out an error in your work, you are welcome to go in and edit the post to fix the problem (as long as you are ahead of the grading deadline). Here is a visual you can follow as you are getting started. Remember you are posting all the work for your problem as well as the solution. Start by clicking Respond Put the problem # in the subject line (e.g. Problem 3C) Use the equation editor to help you type in the math. (Look for the ) Make up any title for your equation. Use the templates to type in all your work Hit Save and Insert If you prefer to attach a file or picture of your work, you can do that here Hit Post when you are done 7
