April 2018 Welcome to Magnolia High School, We are honored to host the Region III-5A University Interscholastic League Spring Academic Meet. Since 1910, the UIL has provided students with opportunities to compete in academic events and to use their wide variety of talents in a positive way. Representing your school in academic competition at the region level is a tremendous accomplishment. We would like to commend the students of Region III who have spent countless hours in preparation for this contest. Good luck to each and every one of you as you compete! Refreshments are available throughout the day in our hospitality room (1274) All events, verification periods and awards will be announced in the commons only. We will announce awards after each event has been verified and certified. Substitution forms need to be turned into the individual contest directors. Final results will be posted continuously on the UIL website during the contest. If an advancing contestant is unable to attend state, please let me know as soon as possible. Accommodations Magnolia is located 43 miles northwest of Houston. The high school is at 14350 FM 1488 Magnolia TX 77354. It is approximately 2 ½ hours from the Golden Triangle, Waco and the Austin Area. We have two hotels in Magnolia if you would like to stay overnight (La Quinta and Executive Inn). Tomball, which is 10 miles away has 5 more hotels (Hampton, La Quinta, America Value, Comfort, and Executive Inn). There are many restaurants in the area. There is everything from local Mexican food restaurants, family diners, barbeque, as well as many chain restaurants (Chili s, Denny s, Pizza Hut, etc.). There is also all the fast food places you can imagine from Five Guys to Panda Express to McDonalds. All these food accommodations are about five miles away. We will run a concession stand for your students with lunch options as well. For coaches, we will have a hospitality room. Entry Fees Entry fees must be paid before the competition by the UIL District Executive Committee (DEC) which represents you. The fee is $1800 per DEC and must be made payable to Magnolia High School PO BOX 428 Magnolia, TX 77353. If you have any question about payment, please check with your DEC chair. Entering the Region Contest All entries are advanced through the UIL Spring Meet Online Entry System based on results from the district meet. Individual school entry is unnecessary. The district results in the online system are considered the school's official entry in the regional meet. If you have a substitution on an advancing team, please let the region meet director know as soon as possible (rsharris@conroeisd.net).
Writing Events Computers are available for Ready Writing, Editorial Writing, News Writing and Feature Writing. Your students may bring their own computers. Computer Applications If you have a student in Computer Applications at the region meet, you must have a coach participate in the grading of the contest. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of the contestant. Speech Events Judging obligations: Each school will provide one qualified judge for as long as that school is competing. The first three rounds of LD will have a single judge followed by panel rounds. Poetry/Prose and Informative/Persuasive will have a judge panel for both preliminary and final rounds. The events will be run by the UIL appointed Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) and chaired by regional speech director. The RAC will administer poetry/prose documentation and persuasive/informative draw. Any questions or concerns that may appear during the contest will be answered by the speech meet director.
