Questions 1 10: READING Australia: A Very Large Country On January 1 st, 1901 Australia became an independent nation. Today more than 22 million people live in Australia. The country is made up of seven states and two territories. The national capital of Australia is Canberra. The largest city in Australia, however, is Sydney, with nearly 4.3 million people. It is the capital of the state of New South Wales. Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria, is the second largest city with over 3.5 million people. There are many mountain ranges in Australia. The highest mountains are found in the southeast of the country and are called the Australian Alps. There is also a long range of mountains along the east coast called the Great Dividing Range. In the east of the country, there are two rivers. The Murray River comes from the Australian Alps and the Darling River comes from the Great Dividing Range. In the center of the country, there is a large lake called Lake Eyre. As it is located in a desert, it is usually a dry salt pan and only fills up with water after a lot of rain. There is a large island to the south of the mainland called Tasmania which is a state of Australia. The largest city on the island of Tasmania is called Hobart, which is also the state capital. It has a population of more than 200,000 people. There are many kinds of animals that are unique to Australia such as the kangaroo, the koala, and the platypus, as well as many types of birds such as the Emu and the Kookaburra.
