Week 2: Face to Face: July 5th to July 8th. Online: July 9th. Week 3: Face to Face: July 11th to July 14th. Online: July 15th. Week 4: Face to Face: July 18th to July 21st. Online: July 22nd. Week 5: Online: July 25th to July 29th. 2

Theme: Trip to Pen Pal s Hometown Group Class: Video Modules Real life tasks related to traveling and living in China. Tutoring Session: Role play and further practice of group class content with tutors (teacher trainees); individual error correction; evaluate if students have accomplished daily learning goals. Secret Pen-Pal Letters: (Once every 2 days) Students exchange letters with their tutors (teacher trainees) anonymously. Discuss plan to visit pen-pal s hometown. Three Field Trips: Pre-trip practice, do tasks during the trip, student presentations after the trip. Secret Pen Pal Project Each student is assigned a secret pen pal. Students write letters to their pen pals every week. Teacher trainees serve as pen pals for students. Lead teacher of the student program collects letters. Students introduce their pen pals as online homework. Reveal pen pals at the end of the face-to-face session. Students conduct a virtual visit to pen pals hometowns as part of their final presentation. 4

Video Modules: Authentic Materials Multiple Performance-based Assessment Role Plays (weekly): Students conduct role plays with teacher trainees during the tutoring sessions. Teacher trainees grade the role plays based on students ability to complete each task. Field trips (weekly): Students are assigned tasks to perform during the trips. Teacher trainees assist students with fieldtrip tasks. Students give presentations on the field trips. Teacher trainees grade the presentations using rubrics. LinguaFolio (weekly) Students complete all designated Can-Do Statements 5

One-on-One Online Sessions Three Fridays plus one week after the face-to-face session One hour per day at home. Teacher trainees teach one-on-one sessions. Lead teacher of the teacher program observes one-onone sessions and conduct post-teaching online discussions. Website: Chinese For All Students use the website to Conduct tutoring sessions Complete homework assignments Do web exercises Upload recordings Post daily reflections Submit essays Teacher trainees use the website to Conduct online tutoring sessions to partially fulfill requirement for online teaching practicum Check students homework and leave feedback Read students reflections and leave comments Grade students recordings and essays 6

Online Session Training Training for students and teacher trainees Set up online platform account Provide orientation for the online session Arrange online testing for student-teacher pairs Additional training for teacher trainees Provide workshop on task-based online teaching (6/24) Provide peer-observation and post-teaching discussion sessions Online Session Instructional Focus For students: Personalized Instruction Review & Expand on Video Module Individual Error Analysis Literacy Skills Emphasis on Reading and Writing Complete Final Project Revise Draft Practice oral presentation For teacher trainees: Adapt teaching materials and strategies to suit the virtual environment and the interface. 7

End of Program Assessment STAMP Test (Pre vs. Post Program) Target: One sub-level of growth in one of the four modalities. Final Presentation: Visit my Pen Pal s Hometown Students needs to complete: Essay PPT Oral Presentation Teacher trainees assist in all types of final assessments. Reviewing essays and PPTs Practicing presentation with students Benefits of the Combination Design Students obtain higher language proficiency Teacher trainees obtain enriched teaching and learning experiences High retention rate of students who continue to study Chinese High retention rate of teacher trainees who start or continue to pursue teacher certification Better utilization of manpower at lower cost. 8

Worksheet for Program Design (20 mins.) Goals for Planning: Schedule the programs beginning and ending time to have some overlapping time Find a location that can accommodate both student and teacher program participants for the program activities Share student curriculum with teacher trainees Create opportunities for teacher participants to get to know students and participate in student activities Modify the theme to involve both students and teacher trainees Goals for Instruction: Increase the opportunities and time for teacher trainees and students to interact with each other. Goals for Assessment: Involve teacher trainees in the assessment aspects. Worksheet for Program Management (20 mins.) Goals for Administrative Management: Ensure smooth communications between the director, lead teachers, and staff Ensure the support system is in place. Goals for Coordination: The lead teachers and the program staff must have a consensus in the program goals and yet be flexible when situations mandate changes. Goals for Transparency: Teacher trainees should be informed about project activities (instruction, assessment, etc.) and what the pedagogical design and purpose are. Goals for Feedback: Ensure ways to facilitate collection of feedback and to implement solutions immediately. 10
