Pre-AP Biology Syllabus 2015-2016 Instructor: Mrs. Amy Klein Wesselman Room: 201 Email: amy.wesselman@owen.kyschools.us Phone: 484-4178 Planning: 6 th Period: 1:55-2:45 Course Description: Biology is an inquiry-based course designed to familiarize you with science processes, skills, and understandings related to a wide range of topics in biology. During this course, you will learn to identify the basic questions and concepts that guide scientific investigation and to design and conduct your own investigations. Some important skills you will develop include microscopy, graphing and measurement, identification of research questions, making connections, and the ability to be a self-directed learner. Course Outline: These are some of the topics you will be learning in this class. This list may change as the semester continues, so use this list as a reference. 1. Introduction to Biology &Scientific Inquiry 2. Chemistry of Life 3. Structure and Function of Cells 4. Cells and Energy: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration 5. Genetics: Mitosis and DNA 6. Genetics: Meiosis and Mendel 7. Evolution: Darwin and Evolution of Populations 8. Classification and Diversity of Life 9. Ecology 10. Human Systems Materials Needed: The following materials are required for this class. 1. Loose-leaf paper 2. 1 Folder with Pockets and brackets 3. Three-Ring Binder with tabs Course Procedures Lectures and Labs: Lectures will emphasize biology concepts. They are intended to help you become conversant with the language biologists use and the type of work that biologists do. Labs will familiarize you with skills needed to investigate scientific questions, allow you to establish effective research habits, and reinforce information learned during lecture. Communication is an important part of science, and clearly written lab reports are essential. Scientific Literature: To make scientific progress, it is important for scientists to share information with each other and with the public both orally and in writing. You will be responsible for reading, summarizing, critiquing, discussing, and presenting information from scientific articles. It is very important that you review your notes, homework, and labs frequently! This is especially true when homework has a purpose. Most homework has one or more of the following aims: 1. Practice reinforces the learning of material presented in class and helps you master specific skills. 2. Preparation provides information history, skills, definitions for forthcoming instruction; it is intended to allow you to benefit when the new material is covered in class. 3. Extension or elaboration involves the transfer of previously learned skills to new situations.

4. Integration asks you to apply skills and concepts to produce a single product (e.g., book report, science project). I will make every effort to communicate the purpose of homework assignments to you. If you are having difficulties with any of the topics covered in this course, see me as soon as possible. This will be an exciting and interesting class if we all work together. Remember, the more effort you put in, the more reward you get out! Classroom Rules and Expectations: 1. Be on time and ready to work when the bell rings 2. Be responsible for your actions and your education 3. Follow all school and classroom rules. 4. Respect the property of others. 5. Respect yourself and others. Ms. Wesselman s top ten 1. Please remember & never forget to follow the 5 expectations that are posted at the front of the room. 2. Excessive and/or irrelevant talking ruins class and wastes time. If I, or someone else has the floor, YOU DON T SO DON T TALK! 3. Be prepared when you come to class. I expect you to have your notebook, pen/pencil, and any other materials I have requested you to have, EVERYDAY. 4. Be on time. Class begins when 2 nd bell rings. All tardies are swept. 5. You are not allowed to leave class unless it is an absolute emergency (a REAL emergency!). You must have instructor s permission and a Hall Pass before you leave class for any reason. 6. Do NOT leave your supplies, books, bags, etc. in my room. This is not your locker. Any items that are left, are very likely to be gone before the next day. 7. No food or drink in class (except water). 8. Sleeping in class is grounds for punitive action (reduction of grade, standing in class, parent/principal notification, etc). Stay awake and do your job! 9. Stay in your seat unless you have a viable reason to be up and moving through the room. NEVER STAND BY THE DOOR AND WAIT FOR THE BELL TO RING! 10. Do not cuss, whine, or pout. Be patient, polite, and understanding these take almost no effort, cost you nothing, and will get you a lot. Consequences for Violating Classroom Policy and Rules 1. First Offense Verbal Warning!!! 2. Second Offense Phone call home to parents 3. Third Offense Written referral to the office. Any severe offenses will result in the student being immediately sent to the office! Grades

Breakdown of percentages for grades in Biology, 2015-2016. 70% = Summative Assessment (this includes tests and major projects) 20% = Quizzes 10% = Homework/Classwork/Labs Classroom Procedures and Routines. Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for using a telephone book, boarding an airplane, or approaching a traffic light. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways other people do things. There are also procedures in this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture. 1. Entering Class: a. When entering class you should get your folder from the front table and get together any materials you need for class. This includes sharpening your pencil, getting out your book and notebook, etc. You should then sit in your assigned seat and begin working on your opening assignment. 2. Tardy to Class: a. All tardies to class will be handled in accordance with the sweep procedure. When entering class late, your folder will be located on the filing cabinet as you enter the door. Sit in your assigned seat and begin working on the opening assignment. 3. Materials to bring to Class: a. You should bring all materials to class everyday unless stated otherwise by the teacher. This includes your book, notebook, pencil/pen, folder, paper and notebook. 4. If materials are not Brought to Class: a. If you forget paper, or your pencil/pen, you may borrow those items from me. If you forget your notebook, or folder, you ll have to do without. My suggestion to you is to BRING YOUR MATERIALS TO CLASS EVERYDAY!! b. The paper box is located in the front of the classroom next to the refrigerator. c. The pencil box is located on my desk at the front of the room. 5. Question of the Day: a. The first 5-10 minutes of class will be spent on a question of the day that covers content taught the previous day or new material that will be covered that particular day in class. b. This assignment will be completed on a handout that you will keep in your folder. Questions will be posted on the overhead. c. After entering class and gathering all of your materials, you should immediately begin working on the question of the day. THERE IS NO TALKING ALLOWED DURING THIS TIME. d. We will go over the correct answers as a class after all students have completed the question. 6. Turning in Assignments: a. Most assignments will be collected by unit as a packet. b. We will organize packets the day before they are due. All packets must have a cover sheet and be in the correct order. c. After completing an assignment, it should be placed in your classroom folder; however, several class assignments will be collected daily at the teacher s discretion. 7. Finding out Grade Status: a. Sign up for parent portal and USE IT! b. Do not ask to see your grade in the middle of class; you may see me before or after class if you have any questions concerning your grade. 8. How to get Help: a. If you are having difficulty with an assignment, the first thing you should do is ask your neighbor. If he/she cannot help, then raise your hand, and KEEP WORKING. I will be there to help you as soon as I can. 9. If you need to get up out of your seat: a. You are not permitted to leave your seat without permission.

b. If you need to get up to sharpen your pencil or get supplies, you should raise one finger in the air. c. Once I have acknowledged you, then you may get up to sharpen your pencil or get supplies. 10. If you need to leave for the room for an Emergency: a. THERE ARE NO HALL PASSES IN THIS CLASSROOM! Students will only be permitted to leave the room in emergency situations. If it is not an emergency, do not ask to leave! b. If you do need to leave, raise your hand and wait for me to acknowledge you. c. Once I have done so, you must take the hall pass with you located on my desk. 11. Responding to my request for Attention: a. There are many occasions in a science class in which I will need to get your attention. b. I will stand in front of the room and raise my hand and say give me three. When you hear this, it means that you need to do three things: stop what you are doing, look at me, and listen. 12. What to do after an EXCUSED absence: a. When returning from an excused absence, the first thing you need to do is check with a buddy in class to get the notes that you missed. b. Any handouts or assignments will be placed in your classroom folder. You should check your folder immediately when you enter class. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET YOUR MAKE UP WORK. I WILL NOT REMIND YOU. c. Lab activities cannot be made up! You will have an alternative assignment in order to earn the points missed in the lab activity. d. The policy for turning in work after an excused absence in set forth in the student handbook and will be followed accordingly. 13. Turning in Late Work: a. Late work will be accepted with a 50% reduction in points. b. Late work is to be turned in directly to me. 14. Responding to questions: a. You will be responding to my questions in this class every day. b. If a question is asked, you must raise your hand in order to answer; do not shout out answers! c. Wait until you have been called upon to respond to a question. 15. End of Class: a. The last five minutes of class will be spent on the exit slip. This will consist of anything between 1-5 questions that review the main concepts that were covered in class that day. b. After the exit slips have been completed, you may turn your folders back in to the front table. You are then to clean up any trash around your desk and then sit in your assigned seat. c. NO STANDING AT THE DOOR! All students must remain in their assigned seats until they have been dismissed. d. The bell does not dismiss you from class, the teacher gives you permission to leave. 16. Cell Phones/iPods/iPads a. Cell phones are not permitted to be out and/or in use during the question of the day, lecture, labs, quizzes, or tests. If I see your device out during any of the activities mentioned above it will be confiscated until the end of class! b. During independent seat work, you are permitted to use your technology devices to look up any information that will help you with the assignment on which you are working. You are not permitted to be on social media or games of any kind. If you are on social media or playing games I will confiscate your device! c. During independent seat work you are also permitted to listen to music as long as I or any of your classmates cannot hear the music. If I have to ask you to turn your music down more than once you will lose that privilege. d. If there is ever any confusion as to whether or not you can use your devices, the best thing to do is to ask!
