1.Toulouse national school of architecture 1 Organization Background Since its introduction in 1726, architecture teaching in Toulouse has gone through various stages : it has been in succession a state-owned free school, a Royal Academy of drawing, painting and architecture, a School of arts and industry, a regional school depending on the Higher National School of Fine Arts (ENSBA) in Paris ; in 1968, it obtained some degree of autonomy by becoming a pedagogical unit of architecture (UPA) before gaining today s status as the university Toulouse national school of architecture (ENSA Toulouse). 2 Studies The ENSA Toulouse counts among the 20 French Schools of Architecture under the control of the Ministry of Culture and Communication Architecture and National Heritage Division. The Schools of Architecture joined the European system of university graduation (LMD) last September 2004 which led to some changes in the organization of studies : The new system aims at harmonizing the European degree and grading systems as recommended in the Bologne Statement (signed in 1999) whose goal is to facilitatestudents mobility thanks to a mutual recognition of comparable degrees Studies are organized as follows : - 3 years for the bachelor s degree (180 credits) - 2 additional years to be awarded the degree as an architect (master s) (120 credits) - 3 additional post-graduate years to obtain a PhD. - All the details on the new system, teaching syllabus 2011/2012 and ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is available on the web site : www.toulouse.archi.fr. 3 International relations The ENSA Toulouse is part of a highly active and attractive regional university network. It boasts a very diversified initial and continuing education syllabus, research activities (1 certified laboratory) and postgraduate degrees in partnership with French and foreign universities. The main objectives of the international office team can be described as follows : - Facilitating students and teachers mobility - Conducting comparative assessments of teaching methods (workshops) - Setting-up international training courses and degrees - Fostering scientific cooperation European partnerships The school has already partnerships with 25 EU and EEA universities and states which have signed an association agreement with the European Union in the framework of the LLP Erasmus programme. Our school has also signed scientific and educational cooperation agreements with other European partners. International exchange students guide-book -19/03/2012 5

A bilateral agreeement with the CREPUQ (Board of University Deans in Quebec) facilitates students exchanges. Moreover, the school counts other privileged partnerships with European countries outside the Erasmus programme, Eastern Europe countries (REA network), Asia (India, Vietnam), Latin America (Brazil, Mexico,Perú). 4 Location and facilities How to get to ENSA Toulouse? The School is located south-west of Toulouse, close to the University Toulouse Le Mirail - Toulouse II. You can reach the school by tube and by bus : By tube to the Arènes station (line A Direction Basso cambo) and then by bus n 14 In both cases, get off at stop J.Sauveur, Avenue Bazerque, cross the street and walk fifty meters. The school is opposite the bus stop. Learning resources The building boasts 4 lecture rooms, 14 workshop rooms, 3 computer rooms, an image and digital data resource centre. Library The library hosts a collection of 13 000 books, a wide selection of French and foreign magazines, students reports and research works on the following topics : architecture, art, building, town-planning,... - Students Clubs and Societies - DEDALE for travelling and conferences - DYNAM EAT for festive events, - Sports associations International exchange students guide-book -19/03/2012 6

2.Before leaving 1 How to apply If you are on an international exchange program Please contact the International Students Office of your home school the year before departure. Your application file will be sent by your home school to our international office prior to June 15th of the year before the school year of departure. The file includes : - the letter written by your home school - an application form to be filled and a photograph - a motivation letter written in French - transcript of records The students participating in an exchange programme : - Enrol and pay school fees in their home school or university. - Enrol at ENSA Toulouse free of charge but must inevitably pay fees ( 203 euros in 2011) for Social Security (health cover) - Benefit from the student s status (access to university restaurants, preferential transport passes, etc ) - Study for European credits awarded by ENSA Toulouse according to the assessment in force at the school. 2 Accomodation All the necessary information is available in the Ariane guide-book on-line at the following address : www.univ-toulouse.fr This guide-book designed and produced jointly by the Toulouse European Network PRES and the CROUS provides valuable information to students intending to come to Toulouse. Two kinds of accommodation are available : - University accommodation. - Private accommodation. University accommodation : The number of rooms granted by the CROUS (regional organization in charge of students accommodation in university halls of residence) to international students is limited. Demand is greater than supply, so we cannot guarantee the accomodation If you desire university accommodation, please send your application to our international officefor 15 th june. We will process your request and give you a definitive answer in july. Beware : The booking of your room will remain valid only one month after the date of expected arrival ; in case of no show at this date, it will be cancelled. your Private accommodation : Private accommodation is more numerous but more expensive. You can choose between several possibilities (self-catering, renting in private houses, host families..) but beware of some companies or agents who request payment for information and please do not make any payment before signing a written contract. You can obtain financial housing benefit (ALS,APL) accessible under certain conditions whatever your nationality by applying to the CAF (Family allowances Bureau www.caf.fr) in Toulouse. 3 Documents to collect We strongly recommend to collect all the necessary administrative documents stated below as soon as you receive the letter of acceptance of ENSA Toulouse and long before you leave. If you are not a EU or EEA citizen, do not forget to ask for a long-stay visa. List of documents : - letter of acceptance by ENSA Toulouse - Student s card of your home school or university or cerficate of payment of enrolment fees - Valid passport or ID card and visa if necessary (students outside EU and EEA) - For students outside EU and EEA : Birth certificate including mother s maiden name, translated into French and certified. - 2 identity photographs - Optional additional insurance policy for repatriation to your home country Medical Insurance and Health Care In France, social security system is compulsory for all students. Affiliation is done when you enrol. National insurance contribution in 2011/2012 : 203 euros Students who do not have European card have to pay insurance fees (yearly amount whatever the date of arrival). Additional and optional insurance The French health and social security system does not refund all the health expenses ; some mutuelles (mutual funds) recommend additional insurance covering extra expenses. Civil liability (mandatory) This insurance is mandatory ; it costs about 15 euros and will paid when enrolling ; it covers civil damage (accident at work, during internship,when travelling to and from school). When arriving in Toulouse 1 How to enrol The calendar joined with the letter of acceptance indicates the days when you can enrol. 7 September ( date to be confirmed) : Erasmus welcome session at 10.30 am 10 to 14 septembre : Enrollment and presentation of the programme Monday 17 septembre : Beginning of courses 2 How to choose your courses You will receive all the necessary documents concerning the classes, programs and university calendar when you arrive for registration. We highly recommend that you attend the class presentation session held during the week preceding the start of classes. Courses are organized on a year basis.you must attend all the classes of a Unité d enseignement. Learning agreement Any exchange program student must sign a contract describing the courses he /she is willing to take in agreement with the home school or university. This contract states the number of credits and the marks given by ENSA Toulouse at the end of the school year. This contract can be modified in some cases (timetable constraints,...) The pedagogical coordinators act as tutors to the students and help them design the final contract to be certified both by the home school or institution and by the ENSA Toulouse and to be completed by october 31st. ECTS (European Credit Transfert System) Each module corresponds to a certain number of credits including both taught classes and personal work. A semester corresponds to 30 ECTS credits. Academic results The marks and the attendance certificate are given to you in july and also sent to the partner school or university. 3 How to improve your french A good command of French is essential to study in the best possible conditions and score good results without wasting time. You will asked to take a French language assessment test on your arrival. If you need extra tuition, you will be recommended to take the French language courses (free of charge) organized by the Toulouse University Network PRES. 4 During your stay You are kindly requested to give your address and phone number to the international office ; do not forget to indicate any change. Herewith a list of useful addresses before and during your stay in Toulouse. The Toulouse University network PRES organizes a series of trips or visits to places of interest in the region as well as students concerts, outings, etc. especially designed for foreign students in Toulouse.
