Louisiana CKLA Professional Development Offerings Amplify Education offers a variety of professional development opportunities for states, districts, and schools to assist in effectively implementing the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum within their districts, schools, and classrooms. We conduct professional development sessions onsite that, based on content, range from half a day to three days. Session Description In addition to our standard offerings, Amplify Education designs customized institutes or professional development sessions tailored to the needs and goals of a specific state or district. The following pages provide detailed descriptions of Amplify professional development offerings, which fall into three categories: Teacher Training (TT): These sessions prepare classroom teachers and specialists to implement the CKLA curriculum within their classrooms. Coaching the Coach (CtC): These sessions prepare instructional leaders and coaches to support teachers with their CKLA implementation. Instructional Leader Training (IL): These sessions prepare administrators and instructional leaders for successful CKLA implementation within their districts and buildings. The typical session lengths run as follows: Half-day: 3 hours (8:30 11:30 a.m. or 12 3 p.m.) Full day: 7 hours (8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m., including a one-hour lunch) Delivery methods are determined by participants experience, the previous training received by the school or district, and experience with Core Knowledge Sequence use. Options for delivery of training sessions are listed with each product description. The options on the following pages illustrate the professional learning recommended based on participants levels of experience. Option 1: Initial Implementation This option is geared toward schools or districts new to CKLA or that have received minimal training during initial implementation. Initial Teacher Professional Development: K-3 This interactive session prepares participants to deliver CKLA instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to use the program to teach reading and language arts. They also plan and practice teaching CKLA lessons with feedback from facilitators and participants. Participants use ideas from the session and videos to create action plans for CKLA implementation in their classrooms. who will implement CKLA in their classrooms. o This session can include either the Listening & Learning Strand or Skills Strand, or can include both strands depending on the district s implementation plan. Instructional Leader Overview This interactive session prepares instructional leaders to support implementation of CKLA at the state, district, or charter or school level. Participants get an in-depth look at: how reading and language arts are taught in CKLA; pedagogical shifts necessary to teach the program; how teachers monitor student learning; how to support teachers with implementation; and ways to monitor instructional fidelity. o This half-day session accommodates 15 participants and is geared toward administrators. Strengthening Implementation: K-3 This interactive session reviews the critical aspects of CKLA with emphasis on strengthening procedural and instructional fidelity. Participants are guided through a reflective process of analyzing and discussing instructional strategies that lead to student mastery of program content. o This one-day session accommodates 30 participants is geared toward teachers who have been implementing CKLA within their classrooms. Writing in CKLA: K-3 This interactive session prepares teachers to teach and assess CKLA student writing instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to use the Listening & Learning Domains and/or Skills Strand Units to teach writing by identifying writing opportunities and analyzing student writing samples. who have been implementing CKLA within their classrooms. CKLA for Instructional Leaders with Professional Learning Community (PLC) Planning This intensive session arms instructional leaders with a deep understanding of CKLA to support implementation at the state, district, and school level. Content covers the pedagogical shifts necessary to teach the program, the alignment to the CCR standards, and methods to monitor student learning. Participants walk away with the tools needed to support teachers implementation and to monitor instructional fidelity. Discussion includes ideas and best practices from other district implementations. The session culminates with the creation of a comprehensive action plan for developing and implementing CKLA professional learning at the state, district, or school level. 2015 Amplify Education, Inc. o o This two-and-a-half-day session is recommended for coaches, instructional leaders, or administrators who want to further their knowledge and understanding of CKLA. This session accommodates 15 participants. Amplify consultants provide additional support for CKLA during onsite coaching visits. Onsite visits are customized according to the amount and type of support needed but typically include checking in with the school leadership team, observing classroom instruction, modeling lessons, and providing feedback directly to teachers. Feedback sessions are followed by Q&A and next-step planning. Onsite visits are an effective way to strengthen and maintain CKLA implementation fidelity. o This package includes three (3) consecutive full-day onsite visits that can be split into half-day visits at each building or spread into three sessions over the course of the year. Option 2: Continuing Implementation This option is geared toward schools in the second or third year of implementation ready to take CKLA implementation to the next level. New Teacher Professional Development: K-3 This interactive session prepares teachers to deliver CKLA instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to use the program to teach reading and language arts. They also plan and practice teaching CKLA lessons with feedback from facilitators and participants. Participants use ideas from the session and videos to create action plans for CKLA implementation in their classrooms. new to the district who will implement CKLA in their classrooms. o This session can include either the Listening & Learning Strand or Skills Strand, or can include both strands depending on the district s implementation plan. Assessment and Remediation Guide (ARG): K-3 The Assessment and Remediation Guide session is a customized training that focuses on intervention within the CKLA curriculum. This interactive session for teachers provides in-depth discussion on planning interventions using the Assessment and Remediation Guide., Reading Specialists, RTI personnel, and teachers of students with special needs. Meeting the Needs of English Learners This interactive session prepares teachers of EL in classroom settings, dual language classrooms, or ESL programs to deliver CKLA instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to use the program to teach reading and language arts to students with varying English language development levels. Teachers also plan and practice teaching CKLA lessons that provide the scaffolding necessary to support students who are acquiring English. Teachers use ideas from the session to create action plans for CKLA implementation in their classrooms. currently teaching CKLA in their classrooms. Coaching the Coach with CKLA This intensive session assists current building-level and district-level coaches to facilitate and foster a positive coaching environment in their building(s). Current coaches partner with an Amplify Coach to review best practices and strategies for coaching both new and experienced CKLA teachers. Participants acquire resources to facilitate classroom support. o This one-day session accommodates 15 participants and is geared toward coaches currently working with CKLA schools and teachers. Amplify consultants provide additional support for CKLA during onsite coaching visits. Onsite visits are tailored to the amount and type of support needed but typically include checking in with the school leadership team, observing classroom instruction, modeling lessons, and providing feedback directly to teachers. Feedback sessions are followed by Q&A and planning sessions for next steps. Onsite visits are an effective way to strengthen and maintain CKLA implementation fidelity. o This package includes two (2) consecutive full-day onsite visits that can be split into half-day visits. Option 3: Individualized District and School Support This option includes professional learning opportunities geared toward districts and schools in the third year of implementation and beyond. These offerings are specifically geared toward the needs of individual districts, schools, and teachers. New Teacher Professional Development: K-3 This interactive session prepares teachers to deliver CKLA instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to use the program to teach reading and language arts. They also plan and practice teaching CKLA lessons with feedback from facilitators and participants. Teachers use ideas from the session and videos to create action plans for CKLA implementation in their classrooms. new to the district who will implement CKLA in their classrooms. o This session can include either the Listening & Learning Strand or Skills Strand, or both strands depending on the district s implementation plan. Amplify consultants provide additional support for CKLA during onsite coaching visits. Onsite visits are customized depending on the amount and type of support needed but typically include checking in with the school leadership team, observing classroom instruction, modeling lessons, and providing feedback directly to teachers. Feedback sessions are followed by Q&A and planning sessions for next steps. Onsite visits are an effective way to strengthen and maintain CKLA implementation fidelity. o This package includes seven (7) consecutive full-day onsite visits that can be combined into half-day visits or spread over the course of the year. Individualized Web Conference Support Amplify consultants provide additional support for CKLA teachers and administrators through custom WebEx sessions designed to answer pedagogical questions at all levels. These sessions may be geared toward teachers, administrators, coaches, or district level employees and can cover any topic as determined by the district and Amplify coach during a pre-training call. o This package includes five (5) consecutive half-day web conference sessions. Supplement: Districts Using CKLA for Grades 4 and 5 For districts using CKLA for Grades 4 and 5, the professional learning offerings below provide the training needed to implement their curriculum with fidelity. The Grade 4 and 5 curriculum differs in format, content, and activities, requiring specialized professional learning for teachers and administrators. Initial Teacher Professional Development: Grades 4 & 5 This interactive session prepares teachers to deliver CKLA instruction with fidelity to their students. Participants learn how to use the comprehensive print and digital ELA program. Participants practice teaching lessons aligned to CCR standards through modeling, practicing, and receiving feedback from facilitators and participants. Teachers use ideas from the session to create action plans for CKLA implementation in their schools. o This one-day session accommodates 30 participants and is geared toward Grade 4 and 5 teachers who will implement CKLA in their classrooms. Instructional Leader Professional Development: Grades 4 & 5 This session prepares instructional leaders to implement CKLA for Grades 4 and 5 in their states, districts, or schools. This session provides state and district central office staff and school administrators with an overview of CKLA for Grades 4 and 5 by familiarizing them with the framework used to teach English/language arts. The session helps instructional leaders understand how CKLA aligns with the College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards, pedagogical shifts necessary to teach the program, how to support teachers, and ways to monitor instructional fidelity. o This half-day session accommodates 30 participants and is geared toward Grade 4 and 5 administrators. Strengthening Implementation Professional Development: Grades 4 & 5 During this interactive session, participants reflect on the fidelity of CKLA implementation. They also spend time reviewing pedagogical shifts and the alignment of CKLA to College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards. The content also covers pacing, assessment, and planning many types of instructional units. o This half-day session accommodates 30 participants and is geared toward Grade 4 and 5 teachers currently implementing CKLA in their classrooms. CKLA Strengthening Writing Professional Development: Grades 4 & 5 This interactive session prepares teachers to teach and assess CKLA writing instruction with fidelity. Participants learn how to support writing by identifying writing opportunities, examine the progression and demands of CCR standards, and analyze writing samples. o This full-day session accommodates 30 participants and is geared toward Grade 4 and 5 teachers currently implementing CKLA in their classrooms. Coaching visits from the above packages are available to support teachers at all grade levels. Additional onsite coaching visits may be purchased from your local sales representative.
