Safer Employment (Recruitment ) Training Background and Wider Context In March 2015, the DfE published updated multi-agency statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children. Statutory guidance for schools and FE colleges Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE) has recently been updated and will be operational from September 2016. Both guidance documents highlight the importance of safer recruitment in the safeguarding arrangements of all agencies that provide services for children and young people including schools and FE colleges. Safer Recruitment training has been available for some years, both as an e-learning package and as a face to face course. That approved training was originally badged by the National College of School Leadership (NCSL) and then the Children s Workforce Development Council (CWDC). In December 2013, following a series of meetings between the DfE and interested parties, the Safer Recruitment Consortium was created to update the face-to-face and online training materials and create a vehicle to ensure that good quality training continues to be available to schools, colleges and other services for children and young people. The Safer Recruitment Consortium consists of NSPCC, the Lucy Faithful Foundation, the National Association of Special Schools (NASS) and Child Protection in Education (CAPE), a forum for professionals who support child protection and safeguarding activities across a range of education and similar settings. The new Safer Recruitment training programme was launched on 1st September 2014. Whilst based on the original programme, the updated material takes account of new information about the behaviour of sex offenders; strategies to safeguard young people from abuse in schools, colleges, early years and other settings; and the detail of pre-employment checks including DBS checks as set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education. Based on an understanding of offender behaviour, the training enables s to: identify the key features of staff recruitment that help deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people consider policies and practices that minimise opportunities for abuse or ensure its prompt reporting help participants begin to review their own and their organisations policies and practices in recruitment with a view to making them safer PLEASE NOTE If you completed this course before 1st April 2014, we recommend that you refresh this training as there have been a number of significant changes. this is not a comprehensive workshop on staff recruitment and selection participants MUST attend both consecutive dates for the full duration in order to comply with the requirements of the Safer Recruitment Consortium and in order to receive a certificate Duration of course Day 1 9.00 16.30 Day 2 9.00-12.30 (no lunch) Fees (Payable 10 working days prior to the first day of the course) A B 160 per course for all maintained, academy schools, LA Education services and early years providers 300 per course for independent Sector/Schools
