BACHELOR OF LAWS BACHELOR OF LEGAL AND JUSTICE STUDIES Thomas Lynch Soicitor, Kay & Hughes Art and Entertainment Lawyers, Sydney Kay & Hughes provides ega advice to the media, arts and entertainment industries. Tom moved from Sydney to study and chose to ive at one of the Lismore campus coeges. Within hours of moving into the coege I was meeting peope. It had a rea community fee from the beginning. Johanna, who has a passion to become a crimina awyer and hep disadvantaged peope, studied her aw degree onine. Johanna s Honours research thesis, The under-utiisation of Section 32 of the Menta Heath Forensic Provisions Act 1990 (NSW), was inspired by an experience cose to home. When her edest son, who has an inteectua disabiity, got into troube with the aw, Johanna, then working as a forist, did a the eg-work in preparing a Section 32 appication to get him diverted from the crimina system towards hep and treatment. There s a arge gap in the understanding of both awyers and the courts about peope who have an inteectua disabiity and the effects the process can have on them. We ended up winning the case and when my awyer said I think you re wasting your time as a forist that panted the seed. I enroed in the degree because the Southern Cross University aw schoo is very socia justice orientated. Johanna s ong term goa is to be a barrister. There are currenty not enough Indigenous barristers. By going to the Bar I fee I can effectivey advocate on behaf of those who are disadvantaged in the community - the Indigenous, the inteectuay disabed and the poor - through pro-bono work. A ot of these peope cannot afford barristers. 4 5
