Master s Degree Programme in Public Health (MPH) 2018 Programme description Master s Degree Programme in Public Health (MPH) is offered by the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition in collaboration with the Department of Nursing Science. The program offers four tracks: o Public Health Nutrition o Epidemiology o Globe, Culture and Public Health o Health Promotion in Nursing Science Track selection will be done after common modules in public health by the end of first semester. The objective of the MPH degree programme is to educate top-level experts for different fields and positions in the public health related sectors. The programme s graduates will be able to apply academic knowledge in both national and international contexts. Research training is amongst the key strengths of the programme. The courses in the MPH degree programme include public health, public health nutrition, health promotion, epidemiology and biostatistics, nursing science, research methodology, international health, public health management and policy, and training to strengthen intercultural competence. Medium of studies is English language. MPH degree programme is also available for Finnish applicants fulfilling admission criteria. The application period opens 1st November 2017 and closes 31st January 2018. Application requirements Degree certificate All applicants should have at least Bachelor's or equivalent degree in an applicable health related field corresponding to at least 3 years' of full-time academic studies (equivalent of 180 ECTS credit units in the Finnish university system) obtained at an internationally recognized and accredited university or higher education institution. 1
Bachelor`s degree from either the University of Applied Science or Polytechnic are not eligible. Applicable fields include for example public health, medicine, dentistry, nutrition, nursing science and midwifery. Also pharmacy, psychology, veterinary medicine and environmental sciences are eligible fields. The applicant informs the estimated graduation date in the application form. The final deadline to submit the officially certified copy of the Bachelor s degree certificate (in original language and as translations, if applicable) to the University of Eastern Finland is 10 th August 2018. The proof of the completed degree can be submitted together with the confirmation on accepting the offered study placement. If the copy of the official degree certificate does not reach the University of Eastern Finland by the deadline, admission to the Master s programme will be cancelled. The countryspecific regulations are described in http://www.uef.fi/en/web/admissions/countryspecific-requirements Temporary (provisional) degree certificate A temporary (provisional) degree certificate is a document issued by an institution to a student who has successfully completed all studies included in the degree and the student has graduated. The temporary degree certificate should include the name of the institution awarding the degree, the date of issue, and the name of the person to whom the degree certificate has been issued and which title/degree the person has been awarded. A temporary (provisional) degree certificate is accepted if it was awarded no more than five years earlier. Also the copies of the documents in original language have to be submitted. Translations of educational documents must be 1) issued by the awarding institution or 2) officially certified copy of a translation issued by the awarding institution or 3) translated by an official translator or 4) officially certified copy of a translation made by an official translator. Each page of an official translation must bear the translator s stamp and/or signature. Official translations must be exact translations of the original documents. Language requirements Applicants must demonstrate excellent skills of English language. English language proficiency can be proven with official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English (PTE) test score report: IELTS (Academic): overall 6.5 (min. 5.5 in writing) TOEFL ibt: 90 (min. 22 in writing) TOEFL pbt: 580 (min. 4.0 in writing (TWE)) PTE (Pearson Test of English): 59 Applicants will be exempt from submitting the official language proficiency test if: English as A language with minimum grade Magna Cum Laude Approbatur as a part of Matriculation Examination in Finland English as A1 language as part of International Baccalaureate examination in EU/EEA country* Nordic Country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) or EU/EEA country* or Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States Doctoral degree conducted in English in an EU/EEA country* * EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Gibraltar. Student selection Student selection will be based on the application documents and evaluation how the applicant s skills and competences gained by the previous academic studies correspond to the Master s studies applied. Also the success in earlier studies, curriculum vitae and the motivation letter will be taken into account in the selection process. Meeting the minimum application requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the programme. 3

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Late applications will not be processed. Submitted application forms and documents will not be returned. Tuition fees and scholarships Students who are not citizens of an EU/EEA member state are liable to pay the tuition fee of 12 000 per academic year. University of Eastern Finland offers scholarships for non-eu/eea students. 80 percent of non EU/EEA students in Master s Degree programme in Public Health are granted a scholarship in the form of a tuition fee waiver. Scholarships cover either the full tuition fee (12 000 ) or 80 percent of it (9 600 ). Decisions on the scholarships are made on the basis of academic merits of applicants. The scholarship is granted for two years but is conditional. To be entitled to scholarship also in the second academic year, a student must have completed 55 ECTS of program specific studies by the end of the first academic year. An exception to this rule can be made if a student has been granted approved leave from studies (e.g. due to serious illness). There is no separate application for scholarship. All applicants need to complete the Student Application Form. Those applicants who are applying for scholarship need to additionally complete the Application for Scholarship, which can be found at the end of the application form. The Scholarship does not cover living costs. Students are expected to cover all living expenses (app. 800 per month) and other study related costs from their own financial resources. Publication of results and start of studies Selection results will be published by 28 th March 2018. The applicant must accept the offered study place by 15 th May 2018. The results will be sent to the applicants both via email. The academic year and the studies will start in the beginning of September with Orientation Week. Required documents Degree certificates, and if necessary, an English translation provided by an official translator Course transcript, and if necessary, an English translation provided by an official translator.
