Canadian University Admission Requirements

General and Specific Admission Requirement Examples Always check the university s website for up-dated information

General Admission Requirements Every institution has different General Admission requirements English All of institutions have a requirement that you must meet BC Ministry of Ed graduation requirements Generally, there are the 5 factors you should check To check current requirements at the institutions are you considering search the Undergraduate Admission section of the university s website Minimum Admission Average # of Approved Courses Math Second Language

Specific Admission Requirements Institutions also have Specific Requirements for admission to the Faculty Examples of the most common criteria include: Required Grade 12 courses (E.g. English + 3-5 other Approved Courses ) Supplemental Application (E.g. Business Faculty) In some cases there are required Grade 11 courses (E.g. Science Faculty) Minimum percentage in specific courses (E.g. Math mark)

Approved Courses Every institution has their own list of approved grade 12 courses for admission Generally, BC institutions and most other provinces calculate on 4 approved grade 12 (one of which is English 12) however things are changing and SFU is moving towards 5 and UBC is looking at 6 AB + QC calculate on 5 or 6

BC Approved Course List English + Social Studies Languages Math + Science (English 12)* always used the calculation French 12 or Français Langue 12 Biology 12 Economics 12 Japanese 12 Chemistry 12 English Literature 12 Mandarin 12 Foundations of Math 12 Geography 12 Spanish 12 Geology 12 History 12 Physics 12 Law 12 Pre-Calculus 12 Social Justice 12 All AP (Advanced Placement Courses) However, AP English Literature 12 counts as English 12 so cannot be used as 2 courses Philosophy 12 Sustainable Resources 12 Exceptions Check specific institutions website (e.g. not approved for UVIC, Emily Carr) Check specific institutions website (e.g. not approved for UVIC, Emily Carr) Students must check the website of the institution they are planning to attend for up-to-date information

UBC has historically set the admission standard for our province UBC is moving away from an approved list so within the next few years it is going to be important to carefully check each institution s website to see if there have been changes Changes to UBC Admissions Entrance Requirements for 2019-2020 More information will be available in Spring We will continue to provide up-dates to parents and students as that information becomes available UBC will come in the fall of 2018 and they will explain their admission requirements to WGSS students and parents

What s changing? What s NOT changing Pre-requisite course for degree specific requirements English language requirements Personal Profile and other supplemental information What IS changing How UBC makes competitive academic assessments for each applicant How UBC looks at grades in all Grade 11 and 12 courses (not just four Grade 12s) The impact each Grade 11 and 12 course has depends on how relevant it is to your program of study

Proposed UBC 2019 Admissions Overall Average All Gr. 11 + 12* Core Average All program related Gr. 11 or 12 courses *Note: Includes all viable courses except Applied Design, Skills and Technology; PE; and Career courses UBC will drop the lowest Gr. 11 or 12 grade Individual Course Grades Key Grade 12 Courses + Personal Profile Short Answers + Activity List

UBC s Core Average Calculation

UBC s Core Message to Students:

Personal Profile What is UBC looking for? Broad-Based Admissions Engagement & Accomplishment What s important to you? What are your significant achievements? What have you learned from these experiences? What challenges have you overcome? Voice Leadership http://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/how-to-apply/personal-profile/ Substance

UBC s Academic Assessment Breadth of coursework Students are recommended to take at least six Grade 12 level courses Applicants presenting a heavier course load (in Grade 11 and 12) may be advantaged Rigour of coursework Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in school Applicants presenting courses that contain rigorous/first-year university content may be advantaged Relevancy of coursework Students are encourage to pursue courses that are relevant to their intended are of study at UBC (even if the course marks are not used); those who do so may be advantaged Personal circumstances In some cases, it may not be possible to demonstrate breadth, rigour, and/or additional relevant courses. Applicants can provide information about this and will be considered on a case-by-case basis

How can I increase my chances for admission to UBC? Get good grades in all your classes, particularly those related to what you want to study at UBC. All learning in secondary school is important and can help you gain admission. Pursue your academic interests. Take a breadth of coursework. And don t worry about experimenting with a new subject; UBC will not look at your lowest grade so long as it is not related to what you want to study at UBC. If you do poorly in an important subject at the Grade 11 level and don t want UBC to use the grade, take the course at the Grade 12 level; UBC will only look at the senior grade. Having the highest grades is not the only way to get in challenging yourself by taking more courses, courses that are related to what you want to study at UBC, and courses that are academically rigorous can also be beneficial.
