The Iowa Grocery Industry Association raised nearly $100,000 in 2015 to fund scholarships through the Foundation. These fundraising efforts fortify the foundation s finances so that it can continue to provide scholarships to deserving youth with connections to the grocery industry. The foundation received 387 applications for the 91 scholarships that were awarded for the 2015-16 school year. Scholarships, totaling $146,650, were awarded to students who are at least part-time employees of an IGIA member company or the children of full-time employees working for an IGIA member. Two primary fundraisers that make the IGEF Scholarships possible are the IGEF Scholarship Golf Classic, which brought in $66,602 this year, while another $33,000 was presented to the IGEF through the IGIA Convention Auction for a total of $99,602. Mueller Yurgae Associates also made a significant contribution to this year s fundraising efforts, providing a $2,000 sponsorship and raising $1,327 for the IGEF Endowment Fund through the Mueller Yurgae Associates Golf Tournament at the IGIA Convention. IGEF Provides Member-Funded Piggyback Scholarships The IGEF Piggyback Scholarship program allows IGIA members to award scholarships to their employees and children of employees without the expense of administering a scholarship program. Participating in the Piggyback scholarship program has many potential benefits. A company or individual can honor a relative, founder or former leader by designating a scholarship in that person s name. Offering a scholarship could have potential tax benefits (be sure to consult with your tax professional). Assisting young people to obtain a college education enhances a company s image. The option to provide Piggyback scholarships is just one among many benefits afforded through IGIA membership. For more information on the Piggyback scholarship program or the IGEF, contact Michelle Hurd at 800-383-3663 or mhurd@iowagrocers.com. Fitzgerald Scholarship Program The Foundation was established in 1992 with the express purpose of assisting youth with ties to the grocery industry to achieve their dreams of obtaining a higher education. The IGEF Scholarship program was renamed the Mary I. Fitzgerald Scholarship Program in 1997 in tribute to Mary I. Fitzgerald, who guided the Iowa Grocery Industry Association from 1964 to 1981. Since 2001, the IGEF has helped more than 1,100 youth obtain a postsecondary education, awarding 1,225 scholarships, totaling more than $1.7 million. These scholarships paved the way for youth to achieve their ultimate career goals within and outside of the grocery industry. A large number of the deserving young people assisted by these scholarships say that they would not be the doctor, CEO, nurse, teacher or business professional they are today without the help of the Mary I.
