4 of 12 28/12/2016 15:46 MIKE COLES WRITES:- Paul Nash (1889-1946) was a British surrealist painter, photographer and writer. TATE BRITAIN are currently showing a retrospective of his work (until 5 th March 2017) Paul was the older brother of fellow artist John Nash (1893-1977). He entered the Slade School of Art in 1910. Enlisting in the Army as a private in 1914, Paul s modest duties included guarding the Tower of London - which gave him time to continue drawing and painting, however, in 1916 he was commissioned as a 2 nd Lt in the Hampshire Regiment and sent to the front at Ypres. Invalided back to London in May 1917 he worked from sketches made at the front to produce chalk and ink drawings and watercolours which made such an impression that, when recovered, he was sent back to the front, not to combat, but as an official war artist with a batman and a chauffeur. At the end of hostilities he completed his war work, now including lithographs and oils. Between the wars he wrote, illustrated books, designed pottery and textiles, became a photographer and an art critic as well as continuing to paint. At the outbreak of the second world war, aged 50, he was again commissioned as a war artist, this time by the Air Ministry. Totes Meer (Dead Sea) depicting a sea of broken aircraft, is probably one of his best known works and regarded by Sir Kenneth Clark as one of the best war paintings ever. Paul s brother John had no formal art training but was encouraged by his older brother. He was also commissioned as a WW1 war artist after his combat service at Passchendaele.
5 of 12 28/12/2016 15:46 Although both brothers were noted for their many artistic endeavors, Pauls landscape work in particular, it s their war work that sticks in the memory. Paul Nash is at Tate Modern until 5 th March 2017 http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/exhibition/paul-nash?gclid=coypg8_ OmdACFeMy0wodBPECEg
