See below for details (2% completed by drop date) At student s discretion It is the responsibility of each student to read and accept the due dates outlined on the syllabus Course Policy on Attendance: Test 1: Multiple choice and short answer questions, which cover lectures 1 to 4 (including assigned readings and library skills workshop) Test 2: Multiple choice and short answer questions, which cover lectures 5, 7, and 8 (including assigned readings and APA workshop) Test 3: Multiple choice and short answer questions, which cover lectures 9, 11, and 12 (including assigned readings) Quizzes: Consist of multiple choice and short answer questions, which cover the assigned reading for that week. The goal of the quizzes is to encourage proper lecture preparation. See course schedule for quiz dates. Each quiz will take ~15 minutes to complete and will start at the beginning of class (i.e., 11:10am). Students arriving later than 5 minutes from the start of the class or students who miss a quiz will receive a 0 on that quiz (no exceptions). In Class Assignments: There will be 3 in class assignments distributed randomly throughout the course. A grade of 0 will be assigned to those students who miss an in class assignment (no exceptions). Paper: Students must submit a research paper (~5 pages) that provides a description and analysis of an individual with a potential psychological disorder using background history, textbook information, and research based on at least one EMPIRICAL and PEER REVIEWED STUDY. Specific details will be provided during the first class. The research paper must include an Appendix that includes the first printed page of the empirical journal article(s) used and must use APA style (6 th edition). See paper description for specific requirements to avoid unnecessary deductions. Hard copies of the paper are due in class at 11:10am on March 29 th. No other format will be accepted. Late penalties will be applied after 11:10am. Academic Integrity Module: As part of the paper assignment, all students are required to complete an online module on academic integrity, which can be found on Blackboard: Academic Integrity at Trent. This module will inform you of the major academic integrity regulations and the consequences for academic dishonesty. It will also provide you with instruction on how to avoid academic dishonesty when completing assignments, tests, group-projects, and papers. At the conclusion of each of the three sections, you will be required to take a multiple choice quiz. You must earn 100% on each quiz, and you may take each quiz as many times as you need to in order to do this. The module will provide you with instructions on how to print-out proof of your quiz scores. You must hand in proof of a 100% score to the course instructor or TA by March 15 th or your paper will not be accepted and you will receive a grade of 0. You may be in other courses that require completion of this module. If so, you only need to complete this module successfully once. Simply print out additional proof of your quiz scores. Students are expected to attend all scheduled Lectures (there are no marks attached to lecture attendance). Workshops: a) Attendance (2%): Students will attend two workshops (Library Skills and APA) and receive 1% for attendance at each workshop. Students who leave the workshop early or attend half the workshop will be given a mark of 0 for that workshop. Students must attend their assigned workshop to receive their attendance mark. b) Optional workshop: An optional paper workshop is scheduled for March 15 th at 1:10pm to 2:00pm. Students planning to attend this workshop must bring a completed paper 2

Students with completed paper worksheets will be given priority for one on one assistance over those who drop in. A 10% penalty will be subtracted from the final paper grade for each weekday or partial weekday the paper is late. Written assignments handed in one week after the due date will not be accepted. Paper extensions will be considered only in the case of: a) documented medical conditions, or b) other exceptional circumstances (e.g., family emergency). It is the student s responsibility to notify me as soon as possible, and before the given deadline, to make alternate arrangements. Note that documentation will be requested. If you do not speak with me directly, you must leave a message (with your name and phone number clearly stated) at the number listed on the first page, or e-mail me. Conflict with another class or difficulties other than those listed above are not acceptable reasons for requesting a paper extension. Students are not allowed to miss exams without a LEGITIMATE reason (e.g., death in family or severe illness, etc.). You must contact me or the T.A. within 48 hours of the exam (preferably via email) and provide documentation in order to take a make-up exam. Failure to contact me or the T.A. within this time period will require documentation specifying the reasons for the delay. Missing an exam because of vacation plans is NOT a legitimate reason. If you miss an exam without a legitimate reason, you will receive a 0 on that exam. If, for legitimate reasons, you miss an exam, you will be allowed a make-up exam, to be conducted within one week of the original exam. It is your responsibility to find out when and where your make-up exam will be held. Conflict with another class or difficulties other than those listed above are not acceptable reasons for missing a make-up exam and will result in a mark of 0 for that make-up exam. If you miss the opportunity to write a make-up exam for legitimate reasons, the grade component will be distributed across other evaluative components of the course. Documentation Required for Missed Examinations or Extensions for Papers: An attending Physician s, Psychologist s, or Counsellor s statement. The statement must include: (i) the full name, mailing address, and telephone number of the physician, (ii) the duration of the illness (i.e., specific dates), and (iii) an indication of whether the illness and/or medication prescribed would have seriously affected the student s ability to study and/or perform over the period in question. Note: the physician s/psychologist s/counsellor s office may be contacted to verify that they completed the forms. Examinations missed or extensions for papers on grounds of non-medical circumstances must be supported by appropriate documentation (e.g., obituary notice, automobile accident reports, airline/train/bus ticket/etc. with date of booking on ticket for emergency travel). Airline/train/bus tickets/etc. for emergency travel must indicate destination and departure and return dates. Note: Any material assigned or covered in the course (i.e., lectures, required readings, workshops) is fair game for an exam. Lectures are designed to provide clarification of particular topics and/or to supply you with additional material to extend your understanding of certain topics. They are not designed to cover all the material presented in the textbook. If you do not attend a lecture(s), regardless of the reason, you are responsible for all information that has been presented during class. Lecture notes will be posted on the course website (http://www.trentu.ca/faculty/nim-bolter/courses.html) each week. These notes provide an outline for what will be discussed in class and are not meant to replace actual attendance. WARNING: The substance of the lecture (i.e., the important points) will not be included in the lecture notes. Students are advised to attend all lectures to avoid missing important material. If you are unable to attend lectures you will miss: 1) important material that will be included in the tests, and 2) in class assignments, which are a portion of your course grade. Participation in Research - SONA System (up to 4.25% bonus credit) Most faculty and upper-year students are involved in research for which they require participants. Students are often preferred for this purpose and will be invited to volunteer as participants during the year. Your cooperation will be very much appreciated. Universities are as much places of research as they are of teaching and psychological research cannot be carried out without the cooperation of students who serve as participants. All research involving human participants is conducted under the ethical guidelines of the Canadian Tri-Council Policy on Human Research and must be approved by the Ethics Committee at the university During the year, students will be invited to sign up for research participation at times when it is convenient for them and the investigator to meet. At that time, students will be informed as to the general nature of the study, what will be expected of them in the role of participants, and of any possible negative consequences that might result from serving as participants in that particular study. You should be aware that no person can be required to serve as a participant in any research project and persons who do volunteer are free to withdraw from participation at any time before or during a study. In cases of unwillingness to participate, or withdrawal from a study for personal reasons, there will be no penalty or negative consequences to the student. Participation is entirely voluntary and students participate on the basis of informed consent. The researcher will keep a record of each student's hours of participation, which will be submitted to the SONA system for use in calculating grades in this course. It is your responsibility to register in SONA with the correct course code. Voluntary participation in departmental research provides an opportunity to earn up to an additional 4% (plus.25% for the Gateway Survey) to be added to your final grade. All students who register into the system and complete an initial online questionnaire (the Gateway Survey) will earn.25%, and then be able to register for other studies for bonus course credits. See details on your class website. Additional information can be referenced on the Psychology Departmental website at: http://www.trentu.ca/psychology/researchparticipation.php Through voluntary participation in four hours of research conducted by Psychology faculty and senior students, students in this course may earn an additional 4% to be added to their final grades. Thus, for example, a grade of C+ (68%) would become B- (72%) for a student who participated for the maximum of 4 hours, with each hour of participation earning 1%. As an alternative to participation in research, students can complete one of the following activities to earn the 4.25% bonus credit to their final mark: a) Attend two separate Department of Psychology colloquia during the academic year and write a brief report (500 words) on the contents of both invited talks (2.125% credit for colloquium 1; 2.125% credit for colloquium 2) b) Write a 750 word report on a psychology journal article (supplied by course instructor) OR Regardless of which option is chosen, the 4.25 bonus credit can only be earned if the typed report is submitted to course instructor by the last day of classes (April 6 th, 2018). Students may complete any combination of research or assignments to acquire the bonus 4.25% credit. Departmental Policy on Tests, Exams, and Assignments A. MIDTERMS & FINAL EXAMINATIONS Midterm examinations for half courses within the Psychology Department are scheduled by the instructor of the course. Midterm examinations for full courses and final examination for all courses are scheduled by the Registrar s Office. Students are strongly urged NOT to make any commitments (i.e., vacation, job related, or other travel plans) during either the term as a whole or the final examination period. Students are required to be available for all examinations during the periods for which they are scheduled (as published in course syllabi). B. DEFERRAL OF MIDTERM / FINAL EXAMINATIONS and/or TERM WORK Extensions of deadlines for completion of assignments or writing of midterms/final examinations may be granted to students on the basis of illness, accident, or other extreme and legitimate circumstances beyond their control. Consideration for deferrals will not normally be granted on the basis of vacation/travel plans or job-related obligations. C. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION Students should expect that supporting documentation will be required and must be submitted before a deferral is approved. For illness or accident, supporting documentation will take the form of: (1) the Trent University Medical Certificate from Health Services: (http://www.trentu.ca/healthservices/medical.html), or (2) a certificate or letter from the attending physician clearly indicating the start and end dates of the illness and the student s inability to write an examination, complete assignments, and/or attend classes, as relevant to the particular request. For other circumstances, students should consult the individual Psychology faculty member about acceptable forms of documentation. Notes 1. Academic Integrity: For the purpose of interpreting and applying the University policy on academic dishonesty, the Department of Psychology has adopted the following: When a student submits a piece of written work in fulfillment of an assignment, he/she implicitly acknowledges the following: a) that she/he is the sole author of the work; b) that the wording and organization of the work, apart from acknowledged quotations, is her/his own; and c) that she/he has not and will not submit this work, either as a whole or in part, to satisfy another course requirement. These basic assumptions will be reasonably interpreted. They do not preclude collaboration between students upon a single project, by prior arrangement with the instructor, for shared academic credit (either for written or oral presentation). For an elaboration of the Department s policy on, and for specific examples of, plagiarism, students should consult the sections on academic honesty (pp. 6-8), and appropriate citing and referencing (pp. 135-137, 169) in Mitchell et al. (2010) on reserve in the library. Students who have doubts about what might be considered academic dishonesty are urged to consult the instructor of the course. Ignorance of the University or Department policy does not excuse academic dishonesty. Submissions that fail to meet one or more of these considerations will be subject to procedures laid down in the policy on academic dishonesty as stated in the University calendar. 2. It is the policy of the Department NOT to accept faxed assignments. 3. The same assignment cannot be submitted in more than one course without the prior written permission of all instructors concerned. The written approval must be attached to the work when it is submitted. 4. Students are required to use American Psychological Association style (6 th edition) for all written assignments. 5.
