Seton Ha is dedicated to making a student s transition from high schoo to coege as smooth as possibe that s why we offer persona, one-on-one support through our award-winning Freshman Studies program. Freshman Studies provides guidance and resources to adjust to ife in coege, incuding academic support, socia opportunities, career deveopment and study-skis assistance. There aren t many other universities that make this same effort to get your son or daughter off to a soid start. Our Freshman Studies program is designed to ead your chid to success. At Seton Ha, your chid s Freshman Studies mentor serves as their academic adviser. Mentors get to know students personay and advise them based on their strengths, weaknesses and future aspirations. Mentors guide students in choosing the best academic road expaining the curricuum in their major program, assisting with registration and heping seect the right courses. 3

How wi my chid fit in at Seton Ha? I ove being a peer adviser because when I got here as a freshman I was very shy. But then I joined the Student Activities Board and other cubs and reay came out of my she. I hep other first-year students fee comfortabe, get invoved and have fun because I reay want them to have the best possibe experience at Seton Ha. Our University Life Course is a cornerstone of our award-winning Freshman Studies program. This one-credit course is team-taught by the Freshman Studies mentor and peer adviser. Each week during your chid s first semester, they meet with feow cassmates to tak about how they are adjusting to coege ife. In this free-fowing atmosphere, students tak about iving in the residence has; sharpening study skis; earning about internship, experientia-education and study-abroad opportunities; managing time as they earn to baance academics and a socia ife; taking advantage of community service; and even eating right. Outside of this course, we offer many opportunities to receive academic support. Not ony wi your chid s mentor be monitoring their progress throughout their first year, but students can aso reach out to our Academic Resource Center (ARC) for extra hep in math, science, anguage and writing. The ARC provides group workshops, one-on-one tutoring and onine resources for students throughout their coege career. Seton Ha even provides an innovative Tutors In Residence (TIRs) program. TIRs are undergraduate students who ive in the residence has with the purpose of heping students academicay. Each week TIRs set obby hours where they are avaiabe to hep students (residents or commuters) with projects and course work. 4 At Seton Ha, we beieve students fee more reaxed taking to someone their own age someone who understands. That s why as part of the Freshman Studies program we assign each new freshman a peer adviser (PA), an uppercass student who has been there and done that. The number one job of the student s PA is to hep them fee comfortabe the minute they arrive on campus. Current Seton Ha student-eaders serve as PAs and hep new students find their way, isten when they need advice and make it easy to get invoved in University ife. Furthermore, at Seton Ha students earn to put their ideas into action; discover something new; become part of our unique community; and buid trust, spirit and asting friendships. Here, students wi find a compassionate community with activities gaore! With more than 130 student cubs and organizations, there is something for everyone. More than two-thirds of our students participate in cubs and organizations and 50 percent participate in cub or intramura sports. Not ony wi students make ots of new friends and have fun, but they aso earn to buid their eadership skis. I want to know that my chid is heathy whie at coege. What types of services do you offer? How wi my chid access a that South Orange and New York City have to offer? Protecting our students heath is a top priority. To ensure continuity in the kind of care that your famiy physician has provided over the years, Seton Ha offers our Heath Services center. The Heath Services staff is dedicated to providing accessibe and high-quaity heath care and is fuy accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambuatory Heath Care (AAAHC), a distinction earned by ony four other coege heath services within the state of New Jersey. Services incude genera primary care, incuding sick visits, immunizations, basic ab services and men s and women s heathcare services. Services are offered Monday through Friday and no copay is required for matricuated, enroed students. With the new demands on their time and new adjustments to coege, some students may have difficuty keeping their persona we-being on track. That s why Heath Services aso offers a variety of weness education workshops and group seminars on topics such as eating disorders, confict management, stress reduction and acoho abuse prevention. In addition, University Counseing and Psychoogica Services offers fu-time professiona counseors who are avaiabe on a one-onone basis to hep students cope with persona issues or difficuties. Getting around town is easy for students. Many students wak right into South Orange, just a 10-minute wak. In South Orange, students wi find restaurants, saons, coffee shops, a movie theatre, grocery stores, drug stores, banks and much more. In the center of town is the train station where students can hop on a 30-minute train direct to Penn Station and take advantage of a the excitement of New York City. We aso provide a shutte service, SHUFLY, that students can ride into town throughout the week; on the weekends the shutte takes them to the oca ma and out to a shopping center with Target, Whoe Foods and Best Buy. In addition, in the evenings we aso provide a SafeRide van service. Students can ride from the main campus to any ocation in South Orange that is not on the University shutte route. Ony seniors, commuters and students with specia internships or practicums can have cars on campus, but many students make friends with commuters or use our oca transportation and town shutte services. In addition, Zipcar rentas are avaiabe on campus. The Heath Services staff is dedicated to providing accessibe and high-quaity heath care and is fuy accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambuatory Heath Care, a distinction earned by ony four other coege heath services within the state of New Jersey. 6 7

What are my rights to information as a parent? As a parent, you shoud be aware that for students 18 years or oder there are federa reguations that imit your abiity to access information about your chid s records once he/she enros at Seton Ha. These reguations are caed the Famiy Educationa Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This aw means you do not have the right to view your chid s grades, transcripts or any other educationa records without his/her consent. You aso do not have the right to ca and inquireabout your chid s financia aid, tuition bi, status or activities without this written consent. We encourage you to discuss this with your chid in advance to determine if he/she wi consent. If consent is granted, the student must compete the FERPA Authorization Form in PirateNet under the academic tab. If you woud ike to pay your chid s bi, your student needs to ogin to PirateNet, go to the Main Porta page, and cick the Profie tab. Next, choose View and Pay My Account, and then cick on Authorized Users. Once you are added as an authorized user, this wi aow you to eectronicay access and pay the bi. This authorization does not entite you to access to any other student records. A FERPA reease is required for a other access. How wi you prepare my chid for a successfu ife after coege? At Seton Ha, we beieve in empowering a students to discover their unique caing right from the start. We do this by offering exceptiona career-deveopment services and opportunities. Through the dedication and mentorship of our 12- member career counseing staff, we start working with students in their freshmen year, identifying the best careers for our students, providing workshops, deveoping resumes, honing interview skis and heping students network. The Career Center is committed to heping students find and advance their careers. Together with facuty, as we as empoyer and aumni networks, we provide a practica earning environment to ensure that our students are prepared for professiona success. We offer more than 17,000 internships opportunities, and about 81 percent of our students have an internship or two on their resumes before graduation. And 98 percent of our internship empoyers say they woud hire Seton Ha students if they had an opening. These are among the reasons why our empoyment rate is 90 percent and our aumni mid-career earnings are 50 percent higher than the nationa average. Because of our stear nationa reputation, more than 550 empoyers visit campus every year just to recruit our graduates, incuding Big Four accounting firms, the FBI, The New York Times, Barcay s Capita, United Nations, Madison Square Garden, Godman Sachs, Carnegie Ha, Johnson & Johnson, Prudentia and ABC. 8 9

How wi I keep in touch with my chid? What types of technoogy wi my chid have access to? Our award-winning Mobie Computing Program provides each of our students with a state-of-the-art aptop computer. After two years, the University wi update the technoogy; after two more years it is theirs to keep. A fu-time undergraduate students are required to participate in the Mobie Computing Program and the cost is incuded in tuition and fees. This program aows us to buy the atest technoogy at a ower cost for our students. In addition, we provide students with training on using the same technoogy ensuring a shared experience. We aso provide on-site support shoud something happen to the machine. The fee aso covers the cost of expensive academic-reated software that comes pre-oaded on the machine. We aso provide an emai account and a campus-wide wireess network. Our facuty use the same technoogy. They integrate this technoogy into the cassroom, heping students buid the skis needed to succeed in their persona and professiona ives, encouraging them to think and act criticay. Seton Ha was recenty named one of the Top 5 Most Connected Coeges by U.S.News and Word Report, meaning we offer our students and facuty advanced Internet connections and onine resources. Seton Ha is a great pace to visit, and Famiy Weekend is the perfect time! Famiy Weekend is a three-day event usuay schedued for the first weekend in October. Student performances, movies, food and music are ony a few of the offerings. Pirate s God is a debit-ike account your chid can use to purchase items or pay for services on and off campus. From buying text-books, getting snacks or doing aundry, using Pirate s God is safer, easier and faster than using cash. What You Need to Know About Financia Aid What is Financia Aid? Financia aid is any form of monetary assistance that heps you pay for coege. This incudes schoarships, need-based grants, oans and work-study programs. One of the most common mistakes a famiy makes is not appying for financia aid because they assume they wi not quaify for any need-based grants. Whie this may or may not be true, it is important to remember that appying for aid is aso the ony way to quaify for student and parent oans as we as federa work-study. How and When Do I Appy for Financia Aid? To appy for financia aid, you wi need to compete a form caed the Free Appication for Federa Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a federa government form and it is used by a coeges across the country. It is free and avaiabe onine at www.fafsa.gov. Never pay to fie the FAFSA. There are some Web sites that wi make you pay to fie. Do not use these sites as the information is often not processed and your appication is not submitted. Some schoos may aso ask you to compete an additiona financia aid appication caed the CSS Profie for which there is a modest fee. Seton Ha does not require you to compete the CSS Profie. We recommend that you compete your FAFSA by December 1 of the student s senior year. The FAFSA wi ask for biographica information as we as information from your tax return. You wi have the option of using the IRS data retrieva too, which wi pu information directy from the IRS database to your FAFSA. We strongy encourage you to use this too as it wi make fiing easier and more accurate. A good way to get started and understand what information you need is to compete the FAFSA on the Web worksheet. Visit www.fafsa.gov and search for FAFSA worksheet. If you have questions whie competing the FAFSA, pease fee free to ca Seton Ha or the federa financia aid hotine at 1-800-4-fed-aid. What Happens After I Fie the FAFSA? The federa government may take up to two weeks to process your information. Once the FAFSA is processed, you wi receive a student aid report (SAR). Your SAR is emaied to you if you provided an emai address on the FAFSA. The SAR is aso avaiabe at www.fafsa. gov with the PIN you created when starting the FAFSA. Once you receive your SAR, carefuy review it for accuracy and correct any errors onine. If you input estimated data on your FAFSA, pease update it onine once it becomes actua. The SAR ets you know your estimated famiy contribution (EFC) and aso notifies you if you quaify for federa need-based aid. The resuts of your FAFSA are sent to your state financia-aid authority. They wi use this information to determine if you quaify for any need-based aid from the state. Pease note, if you are from New Jersey, you wi need to answer a few additiona questions. A ink to these questions can be found at the end of the FAFSA. If you do not do so, you cannot receive state aid. The resuts of your FAFSA are aso sent to a the schoos you isted on your FAFSA. Seton Ha s schoo code is 002632. Schoos wi use this information to provide you with a financia aid package. A financia aid package tes you the cost of attendance at the schoo as we as how much aid you are receiving from the schoo, the federa government and the state. This wi incude a gift aid, such as schoarships and need-based grants, as we as oans and work-study programs (if you are eigibe). Financia aid packages from Seton Ha are usuay sent in ate February. Financia aid packages from Seton Ha are ony sent once. Any updates or revisions can be found on PirateNet (if you have submitted your deposit) or on the appicant porta. FAFSA fiing tips Here are some quick tips to hep you compete your FAFSA and avoid common mistakes. Enter names and Socia Security numbers exacty as they appear on your Socia Security card. Do not eave anything bank; if a parent does not have a Socia Security number, pease put 000-00-0000. Aways round to the nearest doar amount and never put in commas or decima points. Enter your income information from your tax return, not your W2. When asked about the number of peope in your househod, incude the student, yoursef and your spouse/significant other, any sibings (under 24) and other peope if they currenty ive with you and you provide more than haf of their support and wi continue to do so. When asked about the number in your househod who wi attend coege, incude your chid and any of their sibings under 24, but do not incude yoursef or your spouse/significant other. Ony the student needs to be a U.S. citizen or an eigibe non-citizen to fie the FAFSA. Parents do not have to be. You can ist up to 10 coeges on your FAFSA. Seton Ha s FAFSA code is 002632. Mae students must be registered with seective services to receive financia aid. If parents are divorced, provide information for the parent with whom the student ives more than 50 percent of the time. If this parent is remarried, step-parent info must be incuded as we. You must sign your FAFSA in order for it to be processed. You can do so using the PIN you created when starting the FAFSA; if you did not create a PIN, you may print the signature page from the Web site and mai it. Your FAFSA cannot be processed unti the signature is received. This can cause serious deays in the receipt of your aid. To be sure your appication went through, you must wait for the confirmation page and your confirmation number at the end of the onine process. Definition of Terms Direct Costs These are the actua biabe costs from the institution. They incude tuition and fees and room and board (if iving on campus). Expected Famiy Contribution (EFC) This is the amount the government has determined you can contribute to your education based on the information you provided on your FAFSA. Financia Aid Office 800-222-7183 Free Appication for Federa Student Aid (FASFA) This is the federa form used to appy for financia aid. You must fie this form every year to be reconsidered for aid. Pease fie onine at www.fafsa.gov. Indirect Costs These are additiona costs for which you wi not receive a bi but which you shoud consider when thinking about financing your education. These incude items such as books, trave, suppies and room and board (if you don t ive on campus). PirateNet This is your personaized Seton Ha Web porta. It wi have information such as your financia aid package, your bi, your cass schedue, etc. Through PirateNet, you wi aso be abe to pay your bi, register for casses and much more. Your username and password for PirateNet are sent to you in eary March, if you have submitted your tuition deposit. To submit your tuition deposit, visit www.shu.edu/go/wecome. We strongy recommend that you use the IRS data retrieva too when you fie your FAFSA. Need Your financia need is determined by taking your tota cost of attendance and subtracting your EFC. Tota Cost of Attendance Combined direct and indirect costs.

Take Your Pacement Tests Some students need to take pacement tests in Engish, math and/or foreign anguage in order to be paced in the correct course eve. These tests must be competed before June 1. You can view your required pacement tests on PirateNet. Confirm Your Enroment Submit the $250 nonrefundabe Tuition Deposit (no ater than May 1) onine at www.shu.edu/go/wecome Submit Your Housing Deposit If your student pans to ive in University housing, submit the nonrefundabe $375 housing deposit onine by May 1. Housing assignments are made in mid-juy. Fie the FAFSA (to be eigibe for financia aid) Fie the FAFSA onine at www.fafsa.gov by December 1 and be sure to ist Seton Ha s federa schoo code (002632). Confirm Your Pirate Adventure Attendance Once you og in to PirateNet, you can confirm your attendance at Pirate Adventure, the mandatory overnight program for a freshmen, where you wi meet feow students and your mentor, receive a student ID card, compete registration and more. Your Pirate Adventure date can be found in your acceptance etter. Commuters and resident students wi stay overnight in a residence ha during Pirate Adventure, and parents are invited to attend Day One of a specia Famiy Program. Ony the student is required to stay overnight. Submit Your AP, IB or other Coege Transcripts for Credit We wi grant you coege-eve credit for AP exam scores of 4 or above, higher-eve IB scores above a grade 5, and coege-eve courses in which you have earned a C or better. Seton Ha wi ony transfer up to a maximum of 45 credits earned whie you were in high schoo, of which ony 30 can be from examinations. Seton Ha is ony 14 mies from NYC, so you coud stay aso in Manhattan. Catch a Broadway show, enjoy Times Square or take in the many museums and cutura activities the Big Appe has to offer. It is easy to get to our campus from NYC. There is direct train service from NY Penn Station to South Orange, NJ, using New Jersey Transit. Once you get off the train in South Orange, it is a short, 10-minute wak directy up South Orange Avenue to our campus.
