It was established in 2006 from two pre-existing education facilities in which Western Sydney University had a majority interest. These courses are taught at the brand new Sydney Olympic Park campus by highly qualified TESOL (teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) teachers. The teaching and course content is focused on the specific academic skills you will use as a university student including report and assignment writing, critical and analytical thinking, studying and learning methods, and public speaking skills for tutorial presentations. Sydney Olympic Park Campus The College s Sydney Olympic Park campus is where we teach our English Language Programs. Our facilities include lecture and tutorial rooms, computer labs, Internet access, academic and social support services, food outlets, a student common room and prayer rooms. Students enjoy a wide range of affordable cafes and international restaurants only a short walk away. The Sydney Olympic Park campus is a brand new, state-of-the-art facility located just 20 minutes from the Sydney CBD and next to Sydney Olympic Park train station, as well as many connecting bus services. The campus is in the heart of Sydney s famous Olympic precinct, with a bustling cafe and restaurant district, impressive stadiums and sporting facilities, entertainment venues, parks, medical centres, banks, retail shops and open spaces that will allow you to enjoy the true Australian lifestyle. Bankstown Campus Located in Milperra, the Bankstown campus provides a warm, friendly, multicultural environment with modern, spacious buildings and landscaped gardens. Bankstown campus is where we teach our English Language program EAP 3, EAP 4, EAP 5 and MTDEEP, as well as our University Foundation and our Diploma courses. ACADEMIC ENGLISH FOR TERTIARY STUDIES (CRICOS Code 082069M) Academic English for Tertiary Studies has been specifically designed to develop ESL students English proficiency to enable them to communicate confidently, express ideas effectively and achieve rhetorical competence incrementally so that they attain a level of language proficiency corresponding to the standard required for entry to Australian tertiary educational institutions. This course has five modules, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) 1 to EAP 5, catering for Pre-Intermediate to Advanced English level students. Each module consists of 10 weeks and includes 20 hours per week of face-to-face teaching. EAP 1 - This course provides a bridge between general English skills and academic skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing. During the course, students will concentrate on basic grammar and sentence structure, leading to more complex texts. EAP 2 - EAP 2 provides students with a foundation in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking skills through general coursework, oral presentations, factual reports and regular assignments. EAP 3 - This level consolidates students understanding of a range of academic texts and builds on the skills developed in the EAP 2 course. EAP 4 - EAP 4 extends students proficiency in academic English with opportunities to strengthen their language and critical literacy skills in preparation for tertiary study. EAP 5 - EAP 5 allows students to further develop their language skills in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking to a competent level. It is excellent preparation for the university environment. Students who successfully complete EAP 5 do not need to take any further English language tests to gain entry to their study at Western Sydney University. ADVANCED ACADEMIC ENGLISH SKILLS (CRICOS CODE 082209D) This program has two components: Module A: Reading and Writing, and Module B: Listening and Speaking. Module A provides students with the intensive writing and reading practice they need. It is designed for students who either have IELTS (Academic) 6.5 or above but only a 5.5 in reading and writing, or need to polish their reading and writing skills before entry to tertiary studies. This module runs for six weeks and includes 20 hours of face-to-face classroom time per week. Module B focuses on providing students with high level spoken communication skills for work or further study. It is designed to help improve fluency, pronunciation and public speaking skills. It combines well with Module A. This module runs over four weeks and includes 20 hours of face-to-face classroom time per week. COMMUNICATING IN ENGLISH (GENERAL ENGLISH) (CRICOS CODE 082210M) The General English program prepares students for effective English language communication. The program is designed to develop English proficiency from a beginner level through to an advanced level, and teaches students how to communicate effectively in everyday society. Each course runs in 10-week blocks and includes 20 hours of face-to-face classroom time per week. IELTS PREPARATION COURSE For students wanting to enter university within Australia and overseas or needing an IELTS certificate for visa or Australian immigration purposes, the English Language Program also offers an IELTS Preparation Course. This course provides you with skills and confidence in test taking for both modules as well as an understanding of the IELTS practice test. It also prepares you for all four skills tested (reading, writing, listening and speaking). ENGLISH TEST CENTRE The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Pearson Test of English (PTE) are international English tests used for entry to universities and other educational institutions, both within Australia and overseas. The Test Centre is located at our Sydney Olympic Park campus which is very close to public transport and amenities. The IELTS Test is delivered at Sydney Olympic Park, Bankstown and Parramatta City campuses. The Pearson Test is delivered at Sydney Olympic Park campus. One of the advantages of packaged programs is that only one visa is required for the entire study period at Western Sydney University. Where a package includes English, no further external English test will be necessary before beginning your next course at The College or Western Sydney University ENGLISH ENTRANCE TEST The College offers an English language testing service to determine whether you have the English language skills required for direct entry to Western Sydney University and The College. The two-hour English Entrance Test will assess your English skills in listening, reading and writing. MASTER OF TEACHING DIRECT ENTRY ENGLISH PROGRAM (MTDEEP) (CRICOS CODE 084618D) This program is designed to bridge this gap and provide an integrated skills program of listening, speaking, reading and writing to develop students English language proficiency to an overall 7.5 IELTS with a minimum 8 in Speaking and Listening and minimum of 7 in Reading and Writing. The course incorporates practice in academic study skills and practice in language skills particularly pertinent to teaching in the Australian school sector. English language Study Tour Programs for professional, educational and cultural purposes About Study Tours The College short-term English language Study Tour Programs provide intensive English language tuition for professionals and students. Every course is designed to meet the specific needs of each client group allowing you to develop English language and professional skills in an English speaking environment. More than just English The College understands that not all groups come to Australia solely for English studies. Many corporations and educational institutions look for an international experience, combining English Language Studies with focused learning in a specific business or educational field. The College has the expertise to design and deliver fully customised, interactive English Language Study Tour Programs that can run over several days or several months. If English is not your first language you are required to demonstrate proficiency by achieving the prescribed level in an approved English examination or test before you can receive a full offer of admission. HOW TO APPLY How do I apply? Complete the International Application Process through StudyLink Connect: westernsydney.edu.au/international/apply Ensure you attach official records and certified copies of all documents that are requested. If your documents are in a language other than English, you must provide an official translation of each document, together with certified copies of the original documents. What information will be in my offer letter? Your offer letter will describe the course into which you have been accepted and any conditions or requirements you may need to meet before you can be formally accepted into the course. Information about fees, costs, compulsory orientation and course commencement dates will also be provided. Do I need a student visa? Before you come to study in Australia, you must obtain a student visa from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). border.gov.au Student visas can only be granted for courses that are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions for Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). cricos.education.gov.au A Packaged Offer of Admission may be granted to an applicant who does not meet the required academic and/or English language entry criteria. The Packaged Offer will include an offer to study a relevant pathways program at The College and a conditional offer to study a formal course at Western Sydney University. You will need to successfully complete the relevant pathways program with appropriate grades before you can be formally accepted into the Western Sydney University course. Student visa and temporary entry permits usually last for the period of your course. You must uphold your visa conditions while studying and living in Australia or your visa may be cancelled and you may have to leave Australia. The College is obliged to report any student to DIBP who does not attend class, or who is not making satisfactory progress in their studies. You will also be required to keep The College informed of any changes to your residential and mailing addresses. You must also maintain enough money to pay for travel, tuition, health insurance and living expenses for yourself, your partner and dependent children (including their schooling) during the duration of your stay in Australia and you will not be able to work more than 40 hours per fortnight during academic sessions. Under visa regulations you are required to leave Australia on or before the date your visa expires. Please refer to the DIBP website for details. border.gov.au/trav/stud Do I need health cover? Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a compulsory requirement for the issuing of a student visa. When you accept your offer at The College you will need to purchase OSHC for the proposed duration of your student visa. Students from Belgium, Norway and Sweden may not be required to take out OSHC. The cost of medical treatment is very high in Australia and you must meet any expenses not covered by OSHC. westernsydney.edu.au/international/healthcover How much will it cost me to study? You will need to consider the cost of travel, tuition fees, school costs of any dependents, and living costs. Other costs include compulsory health cover. westernsydney.edu.au/thecollege/fees How do I apply for a refund? If you require a refund of your fees, it is important that you notify Western Sydney University International soon as possible. You must also provide a copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment, together with the mailing address to which your refund is to be sent. Refunds are normally made to your home country, and only in exceptional circumstances are they made in Australia.
