Graduating Student Survey Class of 2013 During the year 2013, CUNY enrolled John Jay College for ongoing participation in the Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA). A College Portrait (http://www.collegeportraits.org/ny/johnjay) is required annually. Compliance also meant adjusting the calendar for our graduating student survey. Our exit survey was formerly administered after the last of the degrees had been awarded during an academic year. That is, after the spring graduation. For VSA, it was moved into the application for graduation process. This negatively impacted our ability to estimate admissions rates for graduating/recently graduated students who have applied to a college for furthering their education. The significance of this change can be illustrated using our fall graduates as an example. Students who graduate during the fall semester, instead of being surveyed in the September after they graduate, are now surveyed during the October-December period immediately prior to their graduation. This places the survey 10 months sooner. In fact, and generally speaking, students are now being asked to report an admission status well in advance of having applied for admission into a subsequent program. As a result, this survey no longer captures reliable information on the rates our graduates are admitted into another program. The response rates of Yes to Have you been accepted yet? (Table 10) are 4% for bachelor and 0% for master degree recipients. It is improbable these rates are correct. The re-calendaring of our survey has invalidated that particular item. These rates are included in this report only for year-after-year consistency of the report. Institutional Research is reviewing this unplanned consequence of participating in the VSA. This report summarizes responses to the 2013 Graduating Student Survey. The Graduating Student Survey includes questions about students perceptions of their experiences with John Jay faculty and advising, their perceptions of how their John Jay education influenced their personal and intellectual development, and their plans for employment and/or further schooling. The survey is administered via a web link made available to students when they file an application to graduate. This survey is now compulsory as part of a graduation process. The class of 2013 consisted of 36 Certificate, 104 Associate, 2323 Bachelor, and 525 Master degree students; 3 Associate, 386 Bachelor, and 87 Master degree graduates responded to the survey. Data for graduates from BA/MA degree programs are counted twice with the Master degree graduates. Table s 1 11 show graduating students responses separately by degree earned. Key Findings: Certificate/Associate Degree Graduates: o 0% of graduates report they completed a capstone experience. o 50% of graduates report they were accepted into a program for further study. Among these graduates, 100% report they were accepted into a Bachelor s degree program. 1
o 50% of graduates applied to programs related to their major. o 99% of graduates highly rate the overall experience in John Jay, and will choose to attend it again. Bachelor Degree Graduates: o 33% of graduates report they completed a capstone experience. Of these graduates, 61% report they completed a thesis or final paper. o 4% of graduates report they were accepted into a program for further study. Among these graduates, 44% report they were accepted into a Master s degree program. o 34% of graduates applied to programs related to their major. o 87% of graduates highly rate the overall experience in John Jay, and 90% will choose to attend it again. Master Degree Graduates: o 50% of graduates report they completed a capstone experience. Among these graduates 56% report they completed a thesis or final paper. o 0% of graduates report they were accepted into a program for further study. o 76% of graduates applied to programs related to their major. o 88% of graduates highly rate the overall experience in John Jay, and 86% will choose to attend it again. The class of 2013 reports very high percent of overall satisfaction with John Jay College experience, and possibility to choose to attend it again in the future. 2
