TO: FROM: DATE: RE: Athletic Directors and Coaches of Schools Participating in PIAA SW Regional/WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Tournament Tim O Malley, WPIAL Executive Director Frank Vulcano, Jr., Wrestling Committee Chairman February 26, 2018 REVISED Tournament Information and Guidelines The 2018 WPIAL Class AAA/PIAA Southwest Regional Wrestling Championships will be held at Canon- McMillan High School High School on Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3, 2018. At the tournament, 280 wrestlers will vie for the honor of being a qualifier to the PIAA wrestling tournament as well as a WPIAL placewinner. To insure that your visit to Canon-McMillan High School is a memorable experience, please read the following instructions and information carefully. Athletic Directors are reminded to circulate this memo to your coaches. 1) DIRECTIONS TO CANON-MCMILLAN HIGH SCHOOL 314 Elm Street Ext., Canonsburg, Pa. 15317 Take Interstate 79 to Houston/ Eighty Four Exit (#43). At the end of exit ramp turn left, and then make a right onto Boone Avenue. School at top of hill. 2) TEAM BUSES/VANS Once entering the parking lot teams will be dropped off at the front of the school. All competing team personnel must enter as a unit and be identified by their coach. Coaches & contestants should enter auditorium doors to the right of the front entrance. Parking attendants will direct the bus/van driver to the designated bus parking area, vans will be directed to the back of the school and buses will be directed to the bus garage. There will not be a shuttle for drivers to the gym so teams must make some arrangements for transportation for the driver if it is needed. ** All coaches should have a contact cell number for their driver, when wrestling is over, the bus can re-enter the parking lot at the high school to pick up the team. 3) CONTESTANT/COACH ADMISSION: For the Class AAA Southwest Regionals, all competing team personnel must enter as a unit and be identified by their coach. Each participating school will be granted one (1) complimentary admission for each qualifying contestant and a maximum of five related team personnel (head coach, assistants, trainer, manager, etc) for each tournament session. Each head coach who has wrestler(s) qualify will be given five (5) wrist bands at the sectional tournament that the head coach should give to his related team personnel. The person must wear the wrist band throughout the tournament to gain admission for each session and to have access to the wrestling area. All other persons must purchase an admission ticket or a spectator wrist band. Related team personnel without a wrist band will be required to purchase an admission ticket prior to entering the gymnasium. 4) LOCKER ROOM ASSIGNMENTS All wrestlers must use the designated Locker Room, which will be clearly marked at the entrance. Please remind wrestlers not to bring valuables to the tournament. Only competing wrestlers and authorized school personnel (coaches, trainers, meet officials, etc.) will be permitted in the locker area. Plain-clothes security personnel will be on duty at all times in the locker room. It will be necessary to share locker compartments.

5) SKIN CHECKS/WEIGH-INS The following schedule for skin checks/weigh-ins will be followed: Friday, March 2 Skin Checks/Weigh-Ins-2:00 PM Saturday, March 3 Skin Checks/Weigh-Ins-9:30 AM Weigh-ins will be held in the auxiliary gym adjacent to the main gym. There will be several weigh-in stations each of which will have a digital scale for use. 6) TOURNAMENT AREA except the locker room area, only the gymnasium(s) and cafeteria complex of Canon-McMillan High School will be available to the WPIAL during the tournament. This restriction must be strictly adhered to at all times. Please remind your wrestlers of their need to comply. 7) DAMAGES Schools are advised that they will be held responsible for any property damage to the facility by their personnel. Proper care of the facility is a must. 8) COACHES DECORUM The head coach of each team is responsible for the actions of their wrestlers. The head coach is expected to act in a professional and sportsmanlike manner and control his wrestlers at all times. Coaches are expected to dress in an appropriate and professional manner. The WPIAL Wrestling Committee strongly recommends that a shirt and tie be worn at all individual and team League events. A coach or wrestler who is disqualified from the Southwest Regional Tournament will not be permitted to coach or wrestle in any further round or event in the PIAA individual championship series. 9) TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Friday, March 2, 2018-Session 1 Doors Open For Contestants..... 1:15 pm Skin Checks/Weigh-Ins.. 2:00 pm Doors Open For Spectators... 2:15 pm Coaches Meeting... 2:20 pm Pigtail Rounds/Preliminary Rd...2:45 pm NOTE: (All spectators, coaches, wrestlers, etc. must leave the gymnasium immediately after the conclusion of session 1. NOTE: All spectators, coaches, wrestlers, etc. must leave the gymnasium immediately after the conclusion of session 3. Saturday, March 3, 2018-Session 4 Doors Open For Contestants 4:45 pm Doors Open For Spectators 5:00 pm Consolation Finals 5:30 pm Parade of Champions 6:45 pm Championship Finals 7:00 pm 10) TOURNAMENT BRACKETS Contestants defeated in the pigtail bouts will be eliminated from further competition. However, there will be full wrestlebacks beginning with the first round (round of 16). Brackets for each weight class will be available on the WPIAL Web Site at www.wpial.org by 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 28. The top four (4) place winners in each weight class will advance to the PIAA Wrestling Championships. 11) CONTESTANTS DECORUM All contestants must be dressed in school uniforms and/or warm-ups while in the wrestling areas and during awards presentations and photographs. A team photo of weight class champions will be taken immediately following the 285 championship match. Contestants eliminated from further competition may attend the remaining sessions of the tournament; However, they are restricted to the spectator seating area. A contestant who is disqualified from the Southwest Regional Tournament will not be permitted to compete in any further competition in the PIAA individual championship series. 12) TEAM BENCHES During competition, a maximum of two (2) team personnel (coaches and/or non-participating contestants) will be permitted on chairs at the edge of the mat. 13) SPECTATOR DECORUM Banners, signs, pom-poms, noisemakers, whistles and portable listening devices (without earphones) are prohibited during the tournament. A spectator who acts in an unsportsmanlike manner may be removed from the premises for the remainder of the event. 14) AWARDS/PHOTOGRAPHS The PIAA will provide four (4) medals per weight classification and one (1) team trophy. The WPIAL will also provide four (4) medals per weight classification. WPIAL and PIAA individual medals will be presented during the awards ceremony between championship final matches. The team trophy will be presented at the conclusion of the tournament. Each PIAA qualifying wrestler must be dressed in school issued uniforms and/or warmups during the awards presentation. A group photo of all champions will be taken immediately following the 285 championship match for use in the PIAA championship program. 15) COMPLIMENTARY STATE TICKETS Each school that qualifies one or more wrestlers to the PIAA Wrestling Championships is entitled to two (2) complimentary series tickets for admission to the Class AAA tournament. Complimentary tickets will be distributed to head coaches with qualifying wrestler(s) during Session 4 of the tournament. The complimentary tickets are for use of the school s administration or their designees only.

16) LODGING ACCOMODATIONS: DOUBLETREE Group Rate - $ 109.00 340 RACETRACK ROAD WASHINGTON, PA 15301 724-222-6200 HILTON GARDEN INN 1000 CORPORATE DRIVE CANONSBURG, PA 15317 724-743-5033 In addition, a refreshment/snack bar in the school cafeteria will operate for spectators and contestants during all sessions of the tournament. 17) GENERAL INFORMATION A certified athletic trainer and a physician will be on duty during the tournament. All taping and rehabilitation is the responsibility of each competing school. If a physician/medical staff determines an injured wrestler should not continue, even though consciousness is not involved, they shall not be overruled (NFHS Rule 8-2-5) Souvenir apparel will be available for purchase at the following prices: T-Shirts-$18 and Hooded Sweat Shirts -$28.; Programs will be available for $5.00. Wrestling updates will be available for $3.00 at the beginning of Sessions 2, 3, and 4. ADMISSION PRICES are as follows: SESSIONS 1, 2, & 3 - Adults-$7.00 and Students-$5.00. SESSION 4 - Adults-$8.00 and Students-$5.00. ALL TOURNAMENT WRIST BANDS (good for all sessions) will be sold as follows: Friday, March 2 Session 1 Adult $ 28.00 Student $ 18.00 Tickets must be purchased at the Gate. There will be no pre-sale of tickets. Pre-kindergarten children are admitted free-of-charge. 18) WITHDRAWAL/REPLACEMENT POLICY It is necessary to contact the League Office when it is necessary to withdraw a wrestler from the AAA Southwest Regional/WPIAL Championships. The policy below will apply: A. A wrestler who withdraws from the Southwest Regional - Class AAA tournament by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 28 may be replaced. The highest placed non-qualifier from the same section as the withdrawn wrestler will be offered the opportunity to replace the withdrawn wrestler. The bracket will be reviewed and the appropriate changes will be made. B. A wrestler who withdraws from the Class AAA Champion tournament after 12 noon on Wednesday, February 28 may not be replaced. The following will be applied: (i) If the withdrawn wrestler is one of the top eight (8) seeded wrestlers, the other seeded wrestlers will be moved up and a pig-tail match entered into the 8 seed.

(ii) If the withdrawn wrestler is not one of the top eight (8) seeded wrestlers and is in the round of 16, then one of the pigtail wrestlers will be placed in the open slot in the bracket. Only pigtail wrestlers whose opponent in the open slot in the bracket is not from the same section, will be available to de placed in the opening. (iii) If the withdrawn wrestler is in the pigtail round, then the opponent will be moved into the round of 16. (iv) If both wrestlers in a pigtail match are withdrawn, then a wrestler in the other pigtail match will be drawn into the opening in the round of 16. The same section rule will apply. The WPIAL Wrestling Committee has been working diligently in planning for an outstanding tournament. However, some unanticipated problems will undoubtedly occur. It is essential that all personnel (coaches, wrestlers, spectators, etc.) conduct themselves in a manner, which brings credit to their school and to the sport of wrestling.
