General Syllable Rules: Every syllable has one vowel sound The number of vowel sounds in a word equals the number of o Ex: home = 1 sub-ject = 2 pub-lish-ing = 3 A one syllable word is never divided These are the 5 basic rules I teach my students: 1. Compound Rule Compound words are divided between the two smaller words. Ex: snowflake = snow-flake 2. Happy Couple Rule Break up the happy couple or the double consonants in the middle of a word. Ex: rabbit = rab-bit 3. Long Vowel Rule When the vowel in the syllable is a long vowel, the break would be right after that vowel. Ex: tiger = ti-ger 4. Added Endings Rule When a syllable ends in a suffix, separate the ending so that it is its own syllable. Ex: careful = care-ful 5. Short Vowel Rule A syllable that has a short vowel sound followed by a consonant would break after the consonant. Ex: spinach = spin-ach
