Ball State University invites nominations for the position of vice president for business affairs and treasurer. The new vice president will serve on the Cabinet of Ball State s new President, Dr. Paul W. Ferguson, who has brought fresh and dynamic vision, leadership, and management. ABOUT BALL STATE UNIVERSITY Ball State University is at an exciting point in its history. Ferguson began his service as the 15th president of Ball State University in August 2014. Prior to his arrival at the university, he served as president of the University of Maine for three years. As UMaine s president, he led the Blue Sky Project, an inclusive campus planning and implementation process, to raise UMaine to new levels of excellence as the most distinctively student-centered and community-engaged of the American research universities. THE OPPORTUNITY The new vice president will be expected to: Work collaboratively with the president and leadership team to continue to build on the long-held tradition of strong fiscal management. He or she will provide overall direction and coordination of the operational, budgetary, and personnel activities of all units within the Division of Business Affairs; advise the President, Provost, Board of Trustees, and collaborate with the Cabinet on financial and business matters; and serve as Treasurer of the university.
Provide leadership and participate in the development and implementation of short- and long-range goals and objectives for the units in Business Affairs. Provide university-wide leadership for business, administrative, and financial matters, as well as the campus physical plant. Serve as a member of the President s Cabinet and university officer. As Treasurer of Ball State University: Identify long-term obligations of the university and develop financing plans and strategies to address such obligations; and Carry out responsibilities on behalf of the Board of Trustees in the conduct of university matters such as executing legal obligations, fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities, authorizing contracts, obtaining state approvals for Board-directed initiatives and conducting other items of university business. Review, approve, and participate in the development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures within the units of Business Affairs. Advise faculty, staff, and/or students on questions or issues pertaining to the function and activities of Business Affairs; includes business and financial activities, the physical plant, and related auxiliary services. Direct and coordinate all official university business and financial activities; assure adherence to federal, state, and local laws and regulations in these activities. Consult with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, members and committees of the Indiana General Assembly, Indiana Office of Management and Budget, Office of the Auditor of the State of Indiana, and officers of other state universities in the planning and execution of official university business and financial activities. Participate in activities of university and external boards, committees, and councils on behalf of Business Affairs and/or the university. Coordinate the planning and activities of Business Affairs; includes the physical plant and auxiliary services with the other areas of the university through regular meetings and ongoing communication. Exercise responsibility over budget planning, state appropriation budget requests, allocations, reporting and control for all university funds. Review and approve budget requests from all reporting units; direct the coordination and preparation of the budget request and written narrative for Business Affairs; includes the physical plant and auxiliary services. For direct reports, assign and review work, orient and train, and make decisions in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS Personal qualities of integrity and unquestioned ethical behavior and vision are essential, as are sound judgment, considerable stamina, and a demonstrated commitment to transparency, communication, and collaboration. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, at least five years of fiscal and financial experience at a senior management level commensurate with responsibilities of the position, excellent oral and written communication skills, and excellent computer skills. Additional Preferred Qualifications A completed graduate degree from an accredited institution, preferably in business administration, accounting, finance, jurisprudence, or other academic discipline related to the responsibilities of the position, 10 years of professional fiscal and financial experience (five years at a senior management level) commensurate with responsibilities of the position, successful senior leadership experience in higher education.
