2 Course Description: Study of the basic theories and concepts of conflict resolution: its philosophical and historical development, paradigms, structure and function, and issues and trends in the field. Course Purpose: The primary purpose of this course is to introduce learners to the basic theories and concepts of conflict resolution from a multi-disciplinary perspective. We will examine a variety of topics on conflict resolution research and practice including: historical developments, definitions, philosophies, paradigms and theoretical foundations, ethics and legal issues, core functions and structures, concepts in training, and workplace learning. Students will read textbook and supplemental materials and then apply concepts within a structured learning project. Course Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to: Discuss and explain in writing the theoretical foundations of the discipline of conflict resolution. Critically reflect upon various theories, models, and research and develop a personal perspective about the relevance, appropriateness, and potential of conflict resolution theory and practice in contemporary organizations and institutions. Prepare a group report and presentation on an appropriate topic. Examine organizations Discuss and describe core concepts related to the topic. Experience group dynamics through collaborative learning projects, group, and posting activities. Further develop research, writing, critical thinking, and referencing skills as well as model many effective conflict resolution skills and competencies. Course Structure: This course is conducted entirely online using Blackboard as our means of communications. Participants will have reading assignments weekly, and will engage in activities frequently with group members. Groups of 5-6 participants will be randomly assigned the first week of class by the instructor. Products of this course will include written assignments, a group written project, a written personal reflection, and a final experience. Participants will be graded on these products as well as participation in the class and in the group. Each group member will prepare a self-evaluation and evaluations of each member of the group. Reading Assignments: Each participant is responsible for completing the reading assignments in a timely manner. Deadlines are listed in the Course Schedule. Discussion and written assignments are made with the assumption that required reading assignments are completed prior to completion of and written assignments. Discussion Assignments: Each participant is responsible for participating in the asynchronous s. This participation will include posting answers to questions posed by the instructor and replying to other participants postings. NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to administer surprise quizzes that will count toward all or a portion of the class participation grade if it is determined

The expectation is that the initial post is made by Friday at midnight Central time and at least two responses to two other students be made by Sunday at midnight Central time. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Please avoid the consequences of academic dishonesty by citing all sources that you use in your work. Academic dishonesty, such as unauthorized collusion, plagiarism and cheating, as outlined in the Handbook of Operating Procedures, University of Texas at Tyler, will not be tolerated. University regulations require the instructor to report all suspected cases of academic dishonesty to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action. In the event disciplinary measures are imposed on the student, it becomes part of the student's official school records. Also, please note that the handbook obligates you to report all observed cases of academic dishonesty to the instructor. Assignments will not be accepted late unless mutually agreed upon (ahead of the due date) by the Professor and the student. Completion Time: You should expect to spend as much time on an online course as you do in a face-to-face course. As a rough guide, you should plan to spend six to ten hours per week on this course. The actual amount of time will vary from individual to individual. This estimate includes the time you spend in reading, s, and assignments.

4 You will have access to all course materials, except exams and certain other assignments, from the start of the course to the end. You may look and study ahead, or go back and review, at any time during the course. All assignments have set due dates. Due dates are as of Midnight Central Standard Time on that date. Assignments/Projects Turn-In Process: All assignments and projects will be submitted through the assignments link found on the main menu of the course. Use the following process to prepare and submit assignments: You will see an exclamation point in your Gradebook when you have successfully submitted an assignment. When assignments are received, I will open them in Microsoft Word for grading. This will enable me to make comments, ask questions, etc. I will then return your assignment through the Student Gradebook area. To see comments about your assignment, click on your grade. If you need more instructions on how to send files through the assignment link, please read the Blackboard Student Manual located in the Tools area. Email: To communicate by email with other course participants or the instructor, click the Communications button on the left. Click Send email to send a message. Generally speaking, I check my email inbox several times a day during the workweek, less frequently on the weekend, and rarely after 6 p.m. any day. If my schedule will make me unavailable to answer emails for a day or two, I will put an announcement out so that you can plan accordingly. One caveat: technical problems in email systems may slow down responses! Usual response time is 24 hours. Group Paper The group paper for this class will be to identify an organization (or use an organization that one of the students in your group is a part of). The group will use the information from our book, additional reading and group members to help identify clear issues of conflict and/or expected conflict in the organization. A conflict resolution strategy is to be designed to work effectively within the organization. Expected length is to be 12-15 pages (excluding references). Grade Replacement Contracts are available in the Enrollment Services Center or at http://www.uttyler.edu/registrar. Each semester s Census Date can be found on the Contract itself, on the Academic Calendar, or in the information pamphlets published each semester by the Office of the Registrar. Failure to file a Grade Replacement Contract will result in both the original and repeated grade being used to calculate your overall grade point average. Undergraduates are eligible to exercise grade replacement

10 for only three course repeats during their career at UT Tyler; graduates are eligible for two grade replacements. Full policy details are printed on each Grade Replacement Contract. The Census Date is the deadline for many forms and enrollment actions that students need to be aware of. These include: Submitting Grade Replacement Contracts, Transient Forms, requests to withhold directory information, approvals for taking courses as Audit, Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit. Receiving 100% refunds for partial withdrawals. (There is no refund for these after the Census Date) Schedule adjustments (section changes, adding a new class, dropping without a W grade) Being reinstated or re-enrolled in classes after being dropped for non-payment Completing the process for tuition exemptions or waivers through Financial Aid State-Mandated Course Drop Policy Texas law prohibits a student who began college for the first time in Fall 2007 or thereafter from dropping more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career. This includes courses dropped at another 2-year or 4-year Texas public college or university. For purposes of this rule, a dropped course is any course that is dropped after the census date (See Academic Calendar for the specific date). Exceptions to the 6-drop rule may be found in the catalog. Petitions for exemptions must be submitted to the Enrollment Services Center and must be accompanied by documentation of the extenuating circumstance. The University has changed its computer programming so that all students have an identification number. The electronic transmission of grades (e.g., via e-mail) risks violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act; grades will not be transmitted electronically. Emergency Exits and Evacuation: Everyone is required to exit the building when a fire alarm goes off. Follow your instructor s directions regarding the appropriate exit. If you require assistance during an evacuation, inform your instructor in the first week of class.
