Unit Assignments Unit I Project After you finish the assigned reading for this unit, identify the foundational aspect of industrial fire problems. What specific dangers/challenges exist in the industrial fire protection setting? Reflect on what you read and what you would like to know more about concerning industrial fire protection. You will prepare a set of interview questions that you will use in a later assignment to interview a current or former industrial fire brigade member. Your Unit I Project submission (one document) should include the following: a three to four paragraph summary of the foundational aspect of industrial fire problems (dangers/challenges/hazards that may exist in the industrial fire protection setting), and 10-12 interview questions. Start thinking about your interview. Be creative and remember to ask open-ended questions about topics such as training, operations, hazards, interoperability, response, brigade size. Go ahead and start thinking about your interview. Be creative and remember to ask open-ended questions about topics, such as: training, operations, hazards, interoperability, response, brigade size. Do you know anyone who has industrial fire brigade experience? You might ask your chief or consider calling a few industries in your local area. Unit II Article Critique Use the CSU Online Library and/or other search engines to find an industrial fire incident within the last five years that resulted in high dollar loss. After reading about the incident, write an article critique to include the following items: identify the issues the fire brigade and/or fire department faced, discuss the mechanisms used by the responders to manage the incident, provide solutions that would have changed the outcome, and make recommendations that will prevent such an incident in the future. Your critique should be a minimum of two pages in length, not counting title page and references. You must include at least one source from the CSU Online Library, but you may also use other outside sources as well. Use APA format for your paper, including all references and in-text citations. FIR 4309, Industrial Fire Protection 2

Unit III PowerPoint Presentation Explore the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Investigation on the February 7, 2009 explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia. The report can be found at the following location: U.S. Chemical Safety Board. (2009). Final CSB report on Imperial Sugar disaster concludes inadequate equipment design, maintenance, and housekeeping led to massive sugar dust explosions. Retrieved from http://www.csb.gov/final-csb-report-on-imperial-sugar-disaster-concludes-inadequate-equipment-designmaintenance-and-housekeeping-led-to-massive-sugar-dust-explosions/ You are a member of the fire brigade for a local industrial complex that is similar to Imperial Sugar. Your complex has fallen behind in its preventive measures for employee and complex safety, much like the Imperial Sugar Refinery did. Your company leaders have a lax attitude when it comes to safety and prevention. You have been asked by the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) director to give a presentation to your CEO and board in order to convince them of the need for things to change. Create a PowerPoint presentation, and include the following information: an overview of the Port Wentworth incident, an analysis of the fire behavior of the incident, and suggested preventative measures that the board might consider for your complex. You can use the information in your textbook as well as information from other reliable sources. (Note: Unmonitored websites, such as Wikipedia, are not acceptable.) You may use the Slide Notes function to explain slide contents as necessary. Be sure to cite your sources in a reference slide, using proper APA formatting. Your presentation must be seven to ten slides in length; the title and reference slides are not included in the slide count. Two CSU Success Center videos are available to view should you need additional assistance in the development of your PowerPoint presentation: Basic: PowerPoint: From Zero to Hero https://youtu.be/yyobcloa72w This webinar will demonstrate how to make a basic PowerPoint presentation as well as how to incorporate backgrounds, text, pictures, screen shots, and other elements that will be useful for making a basic PowerPoint. Advanced: PowerPoint Presentations https://youtu.be/vnsjpzgl36k This webinar will cover guidelines and tips for making a PowerPoint presentation for the academic setting. While there will be some information about how to use PowerPoint, this webinar will mostly focus on the accepted norms for creating a professional presentation. This webinar will also go over how to make a PowerPoint presentation APA compatible. Unit IV Essay You are working in an industrial paint-manufacturing plant as a fire brigade captain. In this plant, there is a tank farm with numerous hazardous chemicals, including styrene and a few tank cars of vinyl acetate. The tank farm is surrounded by four ground monitors capable of flowing 1,000 GPM each and supplied by an on-site fire pump. You are conducting a pre-planning event with your team. You have asked your team to come up with a worst case scenario for your facility. Formulate an industrial emergency plan to control loss for the following scenario: One of the 10,000-gallon styrene tanks is leaking a gallon of chemical per minute from an elevated pipe 15 feet off the ground. So far, the chemical is contained in the concrete dike that surrounds the tank farm. The outside air temperature is 60 degrees and rising. The wind is 5-10 mph, blowing toward a residential area. Your available resources are two engines with foam capabilities and one ladder truck on site. Mutual aid is a half hour away. FIR 4309, Industrial Fire Protection 3

In your response, identify a plan to mitigate the leak, protect the public from harm, and clean-up the spill. Be sure to use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) as needed. The ERG can be accessed here: U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. (2016). 2016 Emergency response guidebook. Retrieved from https://www.phmsa.dot.gov/sites/phmsa.dot.gov/files/docs/erg2016.pdf Your response must be at least two pages in length, double-spaced. You are required to use at least one outside source. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations. Unit V PowerPoint Presentation A large industrial corporation has expressed interest in establishing a presence in your community. This would create many jobs for the area but also raises safety concerns. The community watch group has scheduled an open meeting to discuss concerns. As a member of the local municipal department, you have been asked to prepare a presentation for the community watch group. Your presentation is titled, An Evaluation of Industrial Fire Protection. Using your favorite search engine, browse the Internet for companies that provide industrial fire protection services. A simple search of industrial fire protection should provide you with plenty of options to get started. Focus on these categories of protection: portable fire extinguishers; fire hose, nozzles, and streams; and fire detection, protection, and suppression systems. Create a seven to ten slide PowerPoint presentation, and include pictures and information about the capabilities of each category of protection. Remember, these are laypeople and may not understand a lot of technical information. You can use the information in your textbook, as well as information from other reliable sources. (Note: Unmonitored websites such as Wikipedia are not acceptable.) You may use the Slide Notes function to explain slide contents as necessary. Be sure to cite your sources in a reference slide, using proper APA formatting. The title and reference slides are not included in the slide count. Unit VI Essay As a fire brigade member, you are dispatched to a four-story office building where you have 300 people working at 0900 hours. Report of an unknown biological agent was used, and now you have 50 or more persons down. The weather is warm with no breeze. You are the first responding engine with a four-person crew and backup is a half hour away. After researching a similar real-life event using the CSU Online Library for scholarly journals and papers, briefly describe your actions, methods, tactics, and needs in order to control this incident. Be sure to explain the value of having an established industrial fire brigade within the emergency response teams. Your response must be at least one page in length, double-spaced. You are required to use at least one outside source. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations. Unit VII Project Refer back to the interview questions you created for the Unit I Project. Perform an interview of a current or former fire brigade member from an industrial facility. List your interview questions and the responses of the interviewee. Also, provide a summary that is 200 words in length of what you learned and why it will be important in your career. FIR 4309, Industrial Fire Protection 4

Your response must be at least one page in length. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations. Unit VII Essay Identify one specific piece of industrial fire equipment. What is its history in the fire service? Does its name have any special meaning? What is it designed to do? Are there modifications that you would make to the tool to improve its function in an industrial setting? Your response must be at least one page in length, double-spaced. Any source used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations. Unit VIII PowerPoint Presentation As a firefighter on a fire brigade or a firefighter on the local fire department that responds to a large manufacturing facility, reducing risk to the occupants should be of high importance. Create a seven to ten slide PowerPoint presentation that can be used to improve reactions during an emergency at the facility you choose. If you do not have a facility near you, use the Internet to research one to use for this assignment. Be sure to include the following information: How are employees notified of an emergency? How is the fire brigade/local first responders notified of an emergency? Where should employees go and in what situations? Where do they evacuate? Where is shelter in place? Discuss the accountability of employees. Discuss methods of communication between facility bosses, the fire brigade, and the fire department. How should these communications be limited to prevent confusion? Discuss the benefits of having an industrial fire brigade and communication in an industry setting. APA Guidelines The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading rubric when available. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide by clicking here. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Assessment (Written Response) and (2) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). FIR 4309, Industrial Fire Protection 5

The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Assessments and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Communication Forums These are non-graded discussion forums that allow you to communicate with your professor and other students. Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged, but not required. You can access these forums with the buttons in the Course Menu. Instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to these forums are provided below. Once you have completed Unit VIII, you MUST unsubscribe from the forum; otherwise, you will continue to receive e-mail updates from the forum. You will not be able to unsubscribe after your course end date. Click here for instructions on how to subscribe/unsubscribe and post to the Communication Forums. Ask the Professor This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content questions. Questions may focus on Blackboard locations of online course components, textbook or course content elaboration, additional guidance on assessment requirements, or general advice from other students. Questions that are specific in nature, such as inquiries regarding assessment/assignment grades or personal accommodation requests, are NOT to be posted on this forum. If you have questions, comments, or concerns of a nonpublic nature, please feel free to email your professor. Responses to your post will be addressed or emailed by the professor within 48 hours. Before posting, please ensure that you have read all relevant course documentation, including the syllabus, assessment/assignment instructions, faculty feedback, and other important information. Student Break Room This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Communication on this forum should always maintain a standard of appropriateness and respect for your fellow classmates. This forum should NOT be used to share assessment answers.
