Fr IP1, schlars largely decide the allcatins themselves. Hwever, the LIC has ultimate authrity in determining the final allcatins. IP1 allcatins will be cnfirmed 10 weeks prir t the start f the placement t give schlars sufficient time t cntact spnsrs and rganise intrductry meetings. As schlars are allcated t varius spnsr rganisatins, there will be differences in start/finish dates between C-p Schlars. The start/finish date fr the IP1 perid shuld be negtiated between the Spnsr and the Schlar. The fllwing guidelines must be taken int cnsideratin when schlars are rganising their start/finish dates fr IP1: Timing must be agreed with the IP spnsr/supervisr and shuld take int accunt start and finish dates f academic terms if required The Spnsr reserves the right t insist n particular start dates as they may be crdinating cmmencement f C-p IP placements and vacatin schlars n the same day. The C-p ffice strngly recmmends the fllwing t enable Schlars sufficient time t fully cmplete their IP bligatins befre they return t full-time university IP1 shuld start n later than Mnday, the secnd week f January. Shuld there be any reasn fr an IP t start later than the abve date, the Schlar/Spnsr shuld cntact the LIC and the C-p Prgram Manager. During the curse, schlars are als required t attend ne wrkshp which will be held at the UNSW, Kensingtn Campus. The wrkshp will be held in Week 9 n (date t be set frm 6 t 9pm). The LIC will als attend the schlar s IP1 presentatin which is held at the spnsr s lcatin during Week 13. Please refer t the Curse Schedule at the end f this dcument fr further infrmatin. 3 LEARNING AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES 3.1 Apprach t Learning and Teaching in the Curse The spnsr determines the schlar s learning activities fr the IP cmpnent f the curse. Refer t UNSW C-p Prgram IP Guidelines dcument. Fr the classrm cmpnent, the learning and teaching activities fcus n reflective student learning. Reflectin invlves explratin f ur thughts and actins t better understand the assumptins, values and ethical framewrks we may be using bth cnsciusly and (ften mre imprtantly) uncnsciusly. Reflectin als describes the prcess f evaluating elements f the self, the task and the envirnment with regard t their impact n practice, with the aim f guiding effective decisin-making and actin. Industry Placement envirnments are well suited t fstering reflective learning practices amng students. In this curse, reflectin will be: Each student will reflect and share his r her IP experiences. A cllabrative prcess (including peer exchanges infrmally and at wrkshp) rather than cnfined t intrspectin Based in practice, ging beynd an academic assessment and demnstrating reflectin s rle in develping students prfessinal cmpetencies which are needed fr entry-level successes in the accunting practice as well as fr students lng-term career pprtunities. The classrm cmpnent cnsists predminately f independent and n-line learning activities (e.g. reflective jurnal and Harvard ManageMentr) as well as ne wrkshp. Students MUST attend the wrkshp. 3.2 Learning Activities and Teaching Strategies Learning ccurs n-line via students reflectins, Harvard Business Schl On-Line tutrials, face-t-face at the evening wrkshp, presentatins and utside the classrm thrugh students IP experience. 4 ASSESSMENT 4.1 Frmal Requirements T pass this curse, schlars must satisfactry (minimum f 65) pass bth the IP Cmpnent and Class Cmpnent f the curse. The link t the tutrial is: https://cb.hbsp.harvard.edu/cbmp/access/43216180 4.2.2 IP1 Reflectin Jurnal, Harvard Business Schl Harvard ManageMentr On-Line Tutrials and Wrkshp Engagement (25%) Schlars are required t maintain a reflectin jurnal thrughut their IP1. The reflectin jurnal is t be used as a tl t assist schlars develpment f their prfessinal skills. A list f reflectin tpics is given in the Curse Schedule. Students are required t submit their jurnal at the wrkshp in Week 9. In additin, fr Weeks 7 and 10, students are als required t cmplete On-Line Harvard ManageMentr tutrials relating t Time Management and Presentatin Skills. During Week 1, schlars shuld perfrm a self-assessment f their prfessinal cmpetencies, assess the spnsr s expectatins f a new graduate s cmpetencies, and establish benchmarks t self evaluate their cmpetencies thrughut their IP. Yu will need t gather a list f the cmpetencies desired fr emplyees by yur spnsr rganisatin. These cmpetencies can ften be fund n the spnsr s intranet in the human resurce area under emplyee learning and develpment. Yu can als refer t the prfessinal attributes listed n the C-p Career Manager website as well as the UNSW Business Schl Graduate Attributes. Cmpile a list f prfessinal cmpetencies and use this list as a self-evaluatin tl t assess yur wn prfessinal skills. Once yu have established a base line fr yur prfessinal cmpetences (e.g., pr, gd, very gd), set gals regarding which cmpetencies need t be develped and hw yu will attempt t develp these skills. Yu may cnsider discussing yur cmpetencies with yur spnsr supervisr. CRICOS Cde 00098G 7

Prgressively thrughut the IP, self-assess whether yu are achieving yur gals and what yu can d in the fllwing weeks t imprve yur prfessinal develpment. Tips: This is a reflective jurnal nt just a diary f yur daily activities. Yu may include details f what yur IP1 entails including daily, weekly and mnthly duties but this infrmatin shuld be used as a reflectin f what yu d t develp yur prfessinal skills. Use the STAR-L Framewrk (see belw) t assist yu in writing abut yur learning reflectins. Describe the knwledge yu gained while n the jb and include, where pssible, hw knwledge gained frm yur curses at university was beneficial. This may include technical knwledge as well as knwledge abut managing interpersnal relatinships in the wrk place, managing yur time, wrking independently etc... Each reflectin shuld be dcumented in n mre than 500 wrds. STAR-L framewrk. Stands fr Situatin, Task, Actin, Result and lessns Learnt, can help yu t structure yur reflectins abut an experience in such a way that the meaning and utcme f the experience can be clearly identified and cmmunicated t thers. Situatin the cntext in which the experience ccurred. Task what was actually required f yu in the situatin. Actin the steps that yu persnally tk in respnse t the task. When reflecting n yur actins, ask yurself why yu chse t respnd in that particular way. Result the utcme f yur actins. Hw did yur actins cntribute t the cmpletin f the task? Hw did yur actins affect the final utcme f the situatin? Learnt the things yu have learned frm the experience. Highlight any skills r abilities that yu have develped r imprved as a result f the experience. Think abut hw yu might apply what yu ve learned t ther situatins Students will have the pprtunity t discuss a significant reflectin in an evening wrkshp with their peers. Specifically, students will give a 5 minute presentatin n a critical learning incident related t their prfessinal skills develpment. A critical learning incident in IP is ne which yu believe r feel has been crucial t, r had a significant effect upn yur learning since cmmencing yur IP1 placement. It is an incident which is critical t yur prfessinal skills develpment while n placement. It may mark a turning pint r change in the way yu wuld nrmally think r act. Yur critical learning incident may include any f the fllwing: a wrk task that went particularly well a wrk task that yu fund particularly difficult a wrk task where yu made a mistake and where yu recgnised yur mistake CRICOS Cde 00098G 8

a wrk task that yu fund particularly demanding a wrk task where yur understanding f accunting and business management was challenged a wrk task where there was cnflict, hstility r aggressin The critical incident yu analyse can relate t an individual wrk task r yur rle in a team based wrk task. Chse a brief and specific incident, rather than a case r situatin. Wrking n a critical learning incident analysis invlves significant reflectin n what we d when taking actin as prfessinals. This reflectin relates t ur beliefs and values and hw these impact n and are reflected in ur actins. This reflectin is essential t the develpment f prfessinal judgement and cmpetent practice. The reflectin invlved in analysing critical learning incidents requires a level f bjectivity abut yurself and the impact f yur actins that is nt necessarily autmatic r easy t develp. What yu ntice and hw yu reflect n it is determined by yur view f the wrld which has been affected by such things as yur cultural backgrund, gender, beliefs, values and yur wn life experiences. In presenting yur critical incident analysis yu need t address the issue that within yur wn experiences there are prbably areas that are hidden r invisible t yu in yur wn current level f prfessinal awareness. What this means is that yu have t be prepared t ask yurself questins s that yu can use critical incident analysis as a mechanism t gain insight int yur current level f prfessinal awareness and t braden yur analysis. Why d I view the situatin like that? What assumptins have I made abut the spnsr/task/prblem/situatin? Hw else culd I interpret the situatin? What ther actin culd I have taken that may have been mre helpful? The achievement f this bradened awareness requires significant levels f bjectivity abut yurself and penness t viewing situatins differently; it may als require reflectin upn the pssible need t change sme f yur wn behaviur. The ther issue t be addressed in prducing a critical incident analysis is the same as with all ther written dcuments cncerning clients. Cnfidentiality must be maintained by mitting r changing all identifying infrmatin. Advantages a) Critical incident analysis are highly effective mechanisms fr examining and reflecting n yur wn beliefs and actins, and hw they impact n yur perfrmance as a develping prfessinal. b) Critical incident analysis can be used in relatin t a wide range f learning gals. c) Critical incident analysis prvides yu with the pprtunity t cnsider the factrs which underpin yur actins, within the cntext f yur wn learning. Undertaking this activity as a student, while it may be persnally demanding, means that yu have the supprt f yur supervisr and university members while learning. Disadvantages a) Cmpiling a critical incident analysis can be demanding and smewhat uncmfrtable if the fcus is n a piece f practice that was nt as yu wuld have liked it t be. In this way, it can test yur ability t appraise yurself hnestly and t maintain a flexible, nn-defensive stance. CRICOS Cde 00098G 9

USE THE FOLLOWING TO PRESENT YOUR CRITICAL INCIDENT. Describe the cntext f the incident (fr example, hw far int placement it happened, yur rle at the spnsr at the time, type f spnsr, ther backgrund infrmatin that will assist in understanding the incident etc.) 1. Describe the actual incident in detail. 2. Why was the incident critical t yu? 3. What were yur cncerns at the time? 4. What were yu thinking and feeling as it was taking place; and afterwards? 5.
