News & Views Issue 27-4 May 2016 CELEBRATION OF YEAR 13 ACHIEVEMENTS We celebrated the achievements of our Year 13 students last week in a very special seminar. Certificates were presented by Co-Principals Mrs Griffiths and Mr Tanner and Sixth Form Year Manager Mrs Hamilton. COLLINGWOOD S RUGBY SUCCESS CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 The Year 8 Rugby team sealed an excellent end to the season on Thursday (28 April) with a win in the Final of the Surrey U13 Rugby Plate held at Guildford RUFC near Godalming. Parents and spectators saw the Year 8s produce a dominant performance in their victory over Sunbury Manor in the final game of the competition. In the first 10 minutes it seemed as though the opposition were going to fold under the unrelenting pressure as Collingwood ran in consecutive tries. However some spirited defence from the opposition and a good spell of possession made the game look more competitive. This was short lived as Collingwood s obvious superiority with the ball in hand and outstanding forward play were too much for Sunbury Manor as the game ended 47-7 and gave Collingwood the Plate title! Year 8 Team: Sam Attard, Jay Dhaliwal, Judd Dugdale, George Inoke, Harry Johnson, Chris Lear, Josh Lovell-Smith (C), Imrule Munshi, Toby Nowell, Dan Parry, Connor Pearce, Cameron Voss, Finn Ward, Danny Watson, Luke Wiseman. DofE STUDENTS PRESENT EXPEDITION PROJECTS WITH FLAIR AND MATURITY Following the Silver qualifying expedition to the New Forest (15 April to 17 April) and the Gold practise and qualifying expedition to the Black Mountains in Wales from 23 March 27 March, our students have been working extremely hard putting together projects based on their expedition aims. The presentation of the group projects makes up part of the 20 conditions which students are required to meet in order to pass the expedition section of their DofE award. During the evening of 28 April six groups from the Silver Programme and four groups from the Gold programme presented to an audience consisting of parents, siblings, peers, Collingwood staff, DofE volunteers and the Co-Principals. Despite their nerves presenting to such a large audience, the students presented confidently and with great maturity. The presentations varied greatly from projects about the country code, the nature and wildlife, the geography and geology, the history, group morale, creative arts and psychology (to name a few!). The presentations also varied in style with some using IT presentations, photos, graphs, video footage, artefacts, poetry, scrap books and paintings which made for an exciting, interesting and very Gold Assessed Team 2016 informative evening. There was a special mention given to Anthony Rousou, Oliver Attewell and Andrea Navaneetharajah from the Gold Assessed Team as the presentation last night was the last thing they needed to do in order to complete all sections of their Gold Award. They can now look forward to an invite to St James Palace in London to be presented with their Gold Awards. Miss Evans - Gold DofE Co-ordinator The DofE team would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students on their achievements and let them know how incredibly proud we are of them all.

CELEBRATION OF YEAR 13 ACHIEVEMENTS It was a memorable morning as we recognised and celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2016. The full list of awardees can be found on the Parent Portal (see announcement on home page) and photographs of the event will be displayed in the Sixth Form Centre and on the website. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Students were nominated by their subject teachers and Personal Tutors. Certain awards were voted for by all staff; these included the Community Award which was presented to Olivia Norris, the Enterprise Award which was received by Sinthujja Vaseekaran, the Special Achievement Award which was presented to Rhiannon May and the Believe and Succeed Awards presented to Jack Tomkins, Alice Houghton, Ellyn Sweetman and Antony Rousou. Mrs Hamilton's special prize for outstanding student of the year went to Jenny Benson. Collingwood staff wish all students the very best of luck in their final exams and for the future. Miss Roberts - Sixth Form Personal Tutor / Head of Drama Department RETURN TO PAGE 1 CONGRATULATIONS TO... Dominic Hall who has gained a role to perform in a film called For Me which is a ChildLine App for the NSPCC. Filming is to take place on 21 and 22 May.

COLLINGWOOD STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT LONDON MARATHON On Sunday 24 April at this year s London Marathon several Collingwood students (along with other community volunteers) volunteered by working on one of the many water stations along the course. From the volunteer's perspective this year's conditions were very cold and not very pleasant. Despite this, these young people put in an 11 hour shift starting before 6.00am. They set up the water station on the Isle of Dogs, served vast quantities of water to the 37,000 entrants who made it to Mile 18 and cleared everything away once the majority of runners had gone through. They shouted encouragement to everyone... the elite, the Paralympians and club runners, all sorts of fun runners representing friends, family members and good causes, including the clinically insane prepared to run in heavy costumes to raise money for a charity close to their heart. The team certainly earned the respect of those they served and supported. These students brought credit to themselves, their families and Collingwood in this public facing community service. To be commended in 2016 are Charlotte Wilkinson (8A), Chloe Stedman (9D), Alex Foreman (10D), Emily Stedman (10J) and Niamh Payne (11I) Debbie Dart - Community Volunteer Leader COLLINGWOOD S RUGBY SUCCESS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The Year 10 team were also in action last Thursday and were very unlucky to face a strong Graveny side. There were determined performances throughout the team especially in defence however Graveny proved to be too strong for the U15 s meaning they had to settle for the Runners-up spot. Year 10 Team: Nic Atkinson, Pranil Gurung, Tom Handley, Lewis Herzog, Devraj Juneja, Richard Lovell-Smith, Josh Martin-Jones, Euan Murray, Subik Rai, Cameron Reid, Matthew Rousou, Harry Sawyer, James Smith, Rohit Thapa, Jacob Wells, Alex Winfield, Josh Winton Congratulations to the Years 8 and 10 teams who played tremendously throughout the competition. TEACHER SKYDIVING TO RAISE FUNDS FOR NICARAGUA EXPEDITION On Sunday 29 May Miss Majumdar, an Art and photography teacher at Collingwood College, is taking part in a Tandem Skydive in order to help raise money through sponsorship for equipment and materials needed for our trip to Nicaragua in 2017. An important part of the expedition to Nicaragua involves working with local communities on an agreed project which will benefit the local people. Working with La Esperanza we aim to refurbish and equip a local school or provide them with much needed facilities. We aim to raise enough to fund and provide all the necessary building materials and equipment so that we can work on the project once we arrive in Nicaragua. We are paying for our own travel costs so the money raised through sponsoring Miss Majumdar is purely going towards the cost of the building materials and equipment, which will be of enormous benefit to the local people. If you would like to sponsor Miss Majumdar please click on the link below; we would be very grateful for any donation made. Thank you in advance for your support. https://www.gofundme.com/qxzvfsbk Miss Adie and the Nicaragua Group 2017 Many thanks for your support. Active Kids is Back!
