I N T R p p U C T O R J Examnaton results at the secondary level form the bass for plannng of a number of educatonal program'-es as well as employ^-ent and man-power studes. Recently a greate mportance s attached to ths level of educaton n vew of the new developments n the lght of the 10+2-1-3 scheme of educaton. The examnaton results of Boards of Secondary Educaton that have been ncluded n ths publcaton relate to the followng Boardss- 1, Board cf Secondary Educaton,Andhra Pradesh. Councl for Indan School Certfcate Examnaton, New Delh. Further the examnaton results also nclude examnaton results of t-s level n respect of varous unverstes, as shown n the Tables. ccnd....p/(o

() The examnaton results contaned n ths publcaton gve detaled nformaton n respect of the number appeared and number passed ard pass percentage of varous examnatons lke Hgh School, njfher Secondary and Hgher Secondary Part I examnatar'^so A comparson of nformaton compled for the four years 1571 to 197^ shows that as compared to 1970-71 annu-l the poston has substantally changed n the case of Hgh School examnatons n respect of the number of students appeared whereas n the case of num.ber passed t has not changed m.aterally. In case of surplementary examnatons for these years, at the Hjgh School examnaton the poston emerged to be \ute dfferent because the number appeared and number passed have shown an almost doublng of the respectve fgures, though the percentage of passed has mproved slghtly as compared to the earler years. In respect of Hgher Secondary examnaton (annual) the poston emerged to be comparatvely poor because the number appf^ared s shown to have ncreased substantally whereas the number of those havng passed ths examnaton s shovm to have become lesser and tte pass percentage s also shown to la-'e decreased from 68ok% n 1970-71 to 5oA% n 1973-7^, In the case of supplementary examnatons, n the course cf the same perod, the number appeared n the Hgher Secondary examnatons s shown to have ncreased almost three tmes whereas those passed have only almost doubled and thus the percentage has gone down from 50.3% to kl.9% durng the correspondng perod. In the case of examnaton results of some Boards lke Board of Sec, Educaton, Haryana, Hmachal Pradesh Board of School Educaton, Punjab Board of Secondary Educaton and Central Bg^ard of Secondary Educaton, Delh that conduct the Hgher Secondary Part I exam.haton, the stuaton seems to have not materally altered and the percentage of passes s shown to have ncreased from 65.3 n 1970-71 to 68tO n 1973-7'+ for the annual expmnatcns and t has decreased from 38.6 n 1970-71 to 28,2/^ n 1973-7^ n the case of supplementary examnatons. If we take ndvdually each of these examnatons for each of these four years the pass percentage vares very much n respect cf varous Boards as tbe poston obtans. Let us take the cnse of Hgh School e^amnatons conducted durng these four years. The poston s summed up below:- HIGH SCHOOL EXAMINTIONS : (1) (a) - IQ70-71 fannubl') (Vde Table I on page 1): The pass percentage of varous Boards gven n ths Table No. I shows a'-n nterestng varaton-wth 32.5% n the case of Jammu and Kashmr Board cf Sgc, Educaton at the lowest end and SQ,5% n the case of Councl for Indan School Certfcate Examnaton,New Delh, contd,..p/ (^jl )

() Board of Secondary Educaton and (v) B^afd of Secondary Educaton, Taml Nadu, have shown a rass percentage of more than ^0^ n the annual Hgh School examnaton durng the year. The sex-wse dstrbuton of num.ber appeared and number passed depcts an. nterestng phenomenon snce the number of grls appeared s less than one-thrd and the number of grls passed s more than one thrd of that of the number of boys, thus showng a greater percentage of grls havng passed ths examnaton (5^2.6^ for grls as aganst for boys), () (b) 1970-71 (SUTM)lementarv ) (Vde Table 11 on page 2): The pass percentage of varous Boards s>-own n Table II also shows an nterestng varaton between dfferent Boards wth ^'^,'7% n case cf Board cf Secondary Educaton, Kerala at the lowest end and 73.0^ for Bhar School Examnaton Board, Fatna, at" the hghest. Other Boards lke Board of Secondary Educaton,Assam, Board of Secondary Educaton, Orssa, Board of Secondary Educaton, Rajasthan and the Board of Hgh Schools and Intermedate Educaton, U.P., have shown a pass percentage of more than 50^ n ths supplementary Hgh School examnaton durng the year. The sex-wse dstrbuton of number appeared and number passed also shows that whereas the number of boys passed s about l/3 of those appeared the pass percentage of grls s much less and only about 28.8^ of grls passed n ths examnaton as shown n Table II, (a) 1Q71-72 (Annual) (Vde Table VII on rage 6): These results for Hgh ^hool annual examnatons for 1971-72 are shown n Table No. VII on page 6, The pass percentage n ths case also vares qute sgnfcantly from 27,8^ n the case of West Bengal Board of Secondary Educaton at the lowest end od' 9 0 «n the case of Councl for Indan School Certfcate Examnaton, New Delh, at the hgnest. The other Boards lke Board of Secondary Educaton, Andhra Pradesh, Bhar School Examnaton Board, Patna, Board of Secondary Educaton, Haryana, Hmachal Pradesh Board of School Educaton, Punjab Board of School Educaton, Board of Secondary Educaton, Taml Nadu and Central Board of Secondary Educaton, Delh, have all shown a pass percentage of more than 50^ n the annual Hgh School examnaton. The sex-wse dstrbuton of numbar appeared and number passed shows dj equally nterestng pl:enomenon snce equally good results are shown T-n respect of both the boys and t}''e, grls and the percentage of grls passed s slghtly more than 50^ whereas that for the boys s only l+7«7^. In ths way t has kept up a trend of more percentage for grls passng the Hgh School annual exam.naton as was shown for Vce prevous year n () (a) above. ccntd, P/Cv)

( v) Q- ) (h) 1Q71 -.72 (,9ap.rlenfntarvl. (Vde Table VIII on page 7): The pass percentage of varous Boards s shown n Table VIII and t depcts an equally nterestng varaton between dfferent Boards as n the case of the prevous year ^.s c vared between ^8,k fo n the case of Board of Ctcondary Educaton Kerala at the lowest end and 57A^ n the case of two Boards, vz. Board of Secondary Educaton,Assam and Board of Hgh School and Intermedate Educaton,UcPo, at the hghest. The other Board that showed n percentage hgher than 50 was the VJost Bengal Board of Secondary Educaton only whch reported 53^9??. The sex-wse dstrbuton of number appeared and number passed depcts an equally nterestng phenomenon snce the number cf boys passed shows a better percentage than'that 6Y..grls,as ccm.pared to that n the case of the annual examnatons where the reverse was true, as had happened n the prevous year. () (a) 1972-73 (Annual) (Vde Table XIII on page 11): The pass percentage of varous Boards n 1972-73 annual hgh school examnatons s shown n Table XIII on page 11. Ths Table also shows an equally nterestng varaton as n the case of prevous smlar tables wth 27.2^ n the case of Bhar School Examnaton Bnard, Patna at the lowest end and 82.1^ n the case of Councl for Indan School Certfcate Examnaton, New Delh, at the hghest. The other Boards lke Board of Secondary Educaton, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat Secondary Educr.ton Board, Gandh Nagar, Hmachal Pradesh Board of School Educaton, Punjab Board of School Educaton, Board of Secondary Educaton, Taml Nadu and Central B-^ard cf Secondary Educaton, Delh h-^vc shcv;n r. pass percentage of m^-re than 50 n ths annual hgh school Examnaton durng 1072-73. The sex-wse dstrbuton of the number appeared and number passed has shown a declne n the case of - boys whose percentage com.es t- lttle less than k-2% r^nd has touched rmost '--9!?^ n the case of grls. Thus here the percentage cf boys passng ths ex5.mnaton has gone ccmnaratxtely much below the level -^f the prevous two years as comp?.red to t^.-.at of grls. (h) 1Q7P-7^ fsupplementary-) (Vde Table XIV on page I2) The pass percentage n the case varous B'-.ards s^'^^ws a wde v-ra^on wth 20.'+$^ n the case of B^ard of Secondary Educaton, Taml Nadu at the lowest end and wth ^h.^% n the case of Board of Secondary Educaton,Assam at the hghest, The only other Board that crossed the 50^ mark was tl-e Board of Hgh School and Inter'edate Educaton, 'J.P., wth 50.7^. Thus all the Boards showed a pmr percentage of passes n the supplenentary examnatons "t the hgh school level n 1972-73. The sex-wse dstrbuton F.lso shows an nterestng phenomenon because the percentage of boys passed was about 3^% and that n the case of grls t worked to about 33^-alracst one-thrd n both cases. contd....p/ (vd

The percentage n the case Meghalaya B-ard s more sgnfcant n vew of the fact that n the annual examnaton the percentage w-^s alr-^ost half of t. Further, the other B:-ards that shov/ed more than rassed ncluded the B^ard of Secondary Educaton,Assam, Bhar School Examnaton B-ar^% Patna, Board of Seconclarv Sdcaton, Manpur and Board cf Hgh Scho-1 and Intermedate Educaton, U.P, The sex-wse dstrbuton has also shown a smlar varaton as n the prevous year wth ab-'ut boys rassnn as aganst 38;^ grls, thus shrwng a better percentage n the case c^f grls'^ HIGHER SECONDAKY SX.JPhJ'lONS j {\.\ fa) 1Q70-71 (Annual) (Vde T^ble III -n page 3): Assam showng the p^'ss percentage as 4-0.6^ at the lowest end and the Boarr! -^f Secondary Educaton, Madhya Pradesh wth 79*6^ at the hghest, A pass percentage ^f less than 50^ contd...,p/(7 )
