Getting to Know Pearson Common Core Literature Introduction This guide will explain how the Pearson Common Core Literature program is designed to help students in Grades 6 through Grade 12 meet the rigors of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Examine each of the unique elements of this program, including the flexible Instructional Model, the focused integration of writing, the various assessment opportunities provided in the program, the options for differentiated instruction, and the digital platform, Pearson Realize. The Instructional Model Pearson Common Core Literature provides a unique, powerful, and flexible Instructional Model. This four-part model promotes a gradual release of responsibility as it leads students toward independence. Each step includes rigorous and engaging lessons and activities that prepare students to meet the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. This model provides multiple pathways to success so that you can meet the needs of all learners. 1

Part 1: Setting Expectations During Part 1 of the Instructional Model, set clear expectations for your students as they analyze texts, learn new academic vocabulary, participate in discussions, perform research tasks, and present written responses. Students performance in Part 1 helps you determine their readiness for Parts 2 and 3. Part 2: Guided Exploration Part 2, Guided Exploration, focuses on mastering concepts and standards associated with a specific genre. Part 2 provides support and scaffolding to prepare students for success in working with the anchor text in Part 3. Part 3: Developing Insights In Part 3, Developing Insight, the instructional focus shifts from genre study and skill building to gaining content knowledge through multiplegenre Text Sets. Your students are expected to apply the skills and strategies that they have learned from reading complex texts up to this point. Throughout a Text Set, your students will read critically, participate in academic discussions, conduct research, and develop insights on a topic all the while drawing support and evidence from the texts. 2

Part 4: Demonstrating Independence In Part 4, Demonstrating Independence, your students demonstrate reading proficiency as they independently read and respond to recommended informational and literary texts. Digital independent reading selections are available through the Online Text Set in the Online Literature Library. Program Organization Grades 11 and 12 As your students move closer to college, Pearson Common Core Literature increases in text complexity, not only in the reading level but also in the range of literature reaching across genres, cultures, and centuries. Grade 11 focuses on American literature, and Grade 12 introduces students to British literature. These courses are made up of six units and are organized chronologically. Each course includes intensive workshops dealing with complex texts, Text Set workshops, deeper citing of textual evidence, and a focus on argumentative writing. 3

Writing and Research Writing Pearson Common Core Literature provides numerous opportunities to address students writing and research skills. Each unit features a specific writing mode argumentative, informative/explanatory, or narrative. All writing activities within the unit focus on that particular mode of writing. The unit s writing mode is introduced in Part 1. Students revisit the mode throughout the unit in writing process workshops, timed writing activities, and writing for assessment practice. Students will also find additional writing support online. The Online Writer s Notebook is a blank notebook that your students can use to write responses to the prompts in their student editions. You have access to the students writing for progress monitoring. EssayScorer and SummaryScorer are digital writing tools that offer your students instant scoring and immediate feedback to improve their essay writing, as well as the important skill of summarizing. 4

Research Throughout the program, your students also perform both short- and long-term research. During Part 2 of each unit, a Research and Technology feature provides short, sustained research tasks. During Part 3, the Anchor Text provides your students an extended research experience. The Research Center for students on Pearson Realize includes links to third-party sites to help students develop essential research skills. Assessment Pearson Common Core Literature integrates assessment throughout the Instructional Model to help guide your instruction. A Beginning-of-Year Test assesses your students familiarity with grade-level skills and standards. The results of this assessment enable you to choose a learning pathway for each of your students. The Mid-Year and End-of-Year Tests revisit these same skills to help you monitor students progress. You have the option of administering these assessments online. Each unit of instruction includes formative assessment opportunities such as Close Reading Activities to help you monitor students progress and scaffold instruction. Selected-response Selection Tests and Open-Book Tests, monitor your students skill mastery. Open-Book Tests require your students to provide textual evidence to support their responses. In Part 3, Assessment: Synthesis is administered at the conclusion of the Text Set. Your students will apply their learning to performance tasks focused on speaking and listening, research, and writing. And finally, in Part 4, a Benchmark Test assesses all skills taught within the unit, including reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. 5

Questions require your students to provide textual evidence in their responses. ExamView Assessments are also available so that you can easily customize your own assessments as needed. Meeting Student Needs Text Complexity Pearson Common Core Literature works to meet the needs of all students by exposing them to complex texts and providing additional resources for differentiated instruction. One of the newest instructional challenges you may face is ensuring that your students are exposed to appropriately complex text. Pearson Common Core Literature provides you with comprehensive Text Complexity Rubrics for every selection included in the program. Here you will find information about qualitative measures such as language conventionality and clarity quantitative measures such as Lexile level and Reader and Task Suggestions. Refer to the Reader and Task Suggestions for strategies to scaffold instruction for struggling students, advanced students, and English learners. Differentiation In addition to the Reader and Task Suggestions in the Text Complexity Rubric, Pearson Common Core Literature offers other ways to differentiate your instruction. First, the Unit Instructional Model provides you with the ultimate flexibility to meet the needs of your students. From unit to unit, your pathway can vary, depending on your students performance on assessments and activities. 6

Additionally, Differentiated Instruction notes found throughout your Teacher s Edition provide point-of-use strategies to support the various types of learners in your classroom. To further support your students in successfully accessing reading selections, audio versions of the texts are available on CD, and the online student edition includes selection summaries in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole. The Reader s Notebooks offer support for Below-Level, English learner, and Spanish-speaking students. Digital Resources Pearson Common Core Literature offers you and your students innovative and powerful digital resources on Pearson Realize. Through Pearson Realize, you can set up classes, choose reading selections, and begin teaching, with as little or as much digital content as you wish. Pearson Realize provides easy-to-use teacher resources, student workbooks, and hundreds of novel lesson plans digitally. Realize also includes other powerful tools. Curriculum Builder allows you to customize your curriculum, while the Pearson Reading Maturity Metric provides measurements for comprehension and how meanings of words and passages change as students acquire more exposure to language. In addition, the Professional Development Center is available with resources for successful Common Core implementation. The Online Close Reading Notebook is a digital tool that lets your students mark up and take notes within their reading selections online. Review This guide explained how the Pearson Common Core Literature program is designed to help students in Grades 6 through Grade 12 meet the rigors of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. 7
