Program Overview Intervention Appropriate Grades 2 12 RTI Aligned to the ommon Core STATE STANDARDS Proven to Raise Reading Achievement for your Struggling Students

Proven to Raise Achievement for your Struggling Readers The Academy of READING is an online, intensive intervention program that can be used by a wide range of struggling readers in grades 2 12 for instruction, assessment, and progress monitoring. The program follows fundamental learning principles such as building automaticity in foundation skills, mastery learning, and behavioral motivation. Additionally, since students can work independently on their own skills gaps, teachers can maximize the effectiveness of their instructional time. An Effective Intervention Research-based methodology that develops decoding skills to reach automaticity Dynamic, personalized training plans Real-time, formative data displayed in convenient, easy-to-read reports Proven to provide significant gains in just 30 minutes per day, 3-5 times per week Build Fluency in Foundational Skills The Academy of READING trains students in the five core areas of literacy outlined by the National Reading Panel Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. The program breaks down the complex skills of reading into manageable tasks and employs a structured and sequential approach. This method gives students the foundation they need to tackle increasingly challenging reading skills and concepts. Available for either school or district level licenses NEW! Demonstrate understanding of...spoken words, syllables, and sounds;...grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words; read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History, Social Studies, Science and Technology Aligned to the ommon Core STATE STANDARDS epsbooks.com/commoncore Research-based and Research-proven The design of Academy of READING is based on neuroscience and reading research that takes into account how the brain functions while reading. The program also adheres to the National Reading Panel s recommendations regarding the core skills necessary to be a successful reader. Ongoing research with students using the Academy of READING provides evidence of rapid and permanent gains in foundational reading skills and overall improvement of reading proficiency. Gold Standard Research Students Improve Reading Skills 1.4 Whitehall city school District Whitehall, OH Results: The students who used the Academy of READING achieved nearly 3x greater GLE (Grade Level Equivalent) gains than the randomly assigned control group students. This study adheres to all of the strict design requirements of What Works Clearinghouse. This is an important part of student training because it ensures that students become fluent and automatic decoders, allowing them to devote cognitive effort to higher-order comprehension skills. Through automaticity, students realize permanent gains and master foundational reading skills for life. Online: epsbooks.com Call:800.225.5750 Fax: 888.440.2665 3

A Proven Approach The Academy of READING provides each student with an individualized and dynamic learning experience. Adaptive placement tests provide a snapshot of each student s reading abilities relative to grade level. The program then identifies performance goals and creates an Individualized Training Program for each student. Building Student Confidence As students master each task in the program, they are given on going encouragement, helping them build the confidence they need to tackle more difficult skill areas. PLACEMENT TEST Automated and adaptive online tests create Individual Training Programs for each student. A Focus on Foundational Reading Skills The Academy of READING focuses on the Common Core Foundational Skills of Phonemic Awareness; Phonics and Word Recognition; and Fluency. The program helps struggling students toward the goal of being on-level readers by developing their decoding and word recognition skills to the point of automaticity. This support allows students to build a bridge to the more complex, grade-level skills of vocabulary and comprehension. Phonemic Awareness Students identify rhyming words and isolate, blend, and segment individual phonemes. In Sound Match Rhyming Words exercises, the student hears the target word and then identifies the rhyming word from three possible choices. Sound Match Rhyming Words Phonics Students practice letter-sound correspondence, consonant and vowel blends, diphthongs, spelling conventions, and word building. In this word building exercise, the student hears the target word and then uses the mouse to drag and drop the letters into the gold bubbles to build the word. Letter Sound Matching 3 letter word building 6 For more information, visit epsbooks.com/aor

Fluency Essential automaticity-building exercises that focus on the speed and accuracy of word recognition significantly aid fluency and comprehension of connected texts. Passages offer multiple opportunities for silent and oral reading fluency practice. In this Visual Match activity, students are given a set of 50 items in which they select the answer that matches the target word. Visual Match Words with CVCV letter patterns Vocabulary Students expand their general academic and domain-specific vocabulary knowledge by answering comprehension passage questions about the meaning of words in context. They also improve their vocabulary and reference skills by clicking on preselected words for definitions and pronunciation. Comprehension, Vocabulary Question Comprehension Academy of READING Comprehension exercises help students build silent reading fluency as they improve retention and comprehension of written text. The high-interest reading passages cover a variety of genres, and questions assess students ability to identify the main idea, understand relationships, make inferences, distinguish specific facts and details, and identify author s purpose. Progress Monitoring Monitoring Student Training Teachers are key to the success of the Academy of READING. Their role is to facilitate student training, provide encouragement, and focus on students who are struggling in specific areas. The Academy Management System provides teachers with tools to analyze data and provide differentiated instruction to students who need their help the most. Student names are clickable, allowing teachers to see training results at the individual level. Easy-to-read indicators flag when students are doing well, struggling, or are in need of teacher }time. Class Training Monitor Teachers can use information from a student s error list to identify error patterns and provide additional instruction to help the student master the skill. This student is struggling with short-vowel sounds. The teacher may choose to print this error list and use it for an offline activity such as a dictation. Student Error List The Academy Management System provides teachers with recommendations for how to help struggling students master a skill. Displays automatic interventions that have occurred and actions taken by the responsive intervention engine. Provides skill-specific intervention strategies for teachers. Reporting Reports on Progress and Gains Teachers can access graphical reports to monitor progress and view gains at a student or class level. Student Comprehension Report Use data to group students for instruction. Quickly identify the student s areas of weakness in comprehension. Pie charts make it easy to see the change in percentage of students who are scoring basic and above from the pre-test to the post-test. Pre- and post-test scores are displayed in a graph that can be shared with administrators. Class Gains Summary Report Reports on Gains and Fidelity Real-time access to web-based reports allows administrators to monitor program usage and track student performance at the district and school levels. Administrators can make sure they are maximizing their total cost of ownership and getting a good return on their investment with significant results. Usage targets are identified during the planning stage to ensure that students realize permanent gains in reading and that schools meet fidelity requirements. Visual indicators make it easy to see which classes are meeting the weekly target set for time on task. Online: epsbooks.com Call:800.225.5750 Fax: 888.440.2665 13
