The Official Newsletter for Fowey River Dear Parents & The Senior Leadership Team Carers I am delighted to inform you that both Mr Dale and myself have been asked to continue in our roles until at least Easter by the Adventure Learning Academy Trust. My role over the last ten days as Executive Principal has allowed me to communicate a new vision and direction for the Academy to staff, students and parents. I am very pleased that the focus on high standards and expectations across all areas has already had a visible impact on student behaviour and learning. Mr Dale, the Principal, has been working with staff and students to develop a culture of continuous improvement and has already introduced some impressive changes that have been welcomed by all members of the school community, including the Governors. We are both delighted to develop this work further over the weeks and months ahead. I would like to thank the staff who have worked with energy and enthusiasm since the start of term, building a strong sense of team. LAMDA Success by Beth Ellery, Yr 11 LAMDA is the oldest drama school in the UK. Founded in 1861 as the London Academy of Music. Fowey River Academy has offered the accreditation for the last couple of years and the number of students taking the exams has increased year after year. At the end of last year, 21 students, after working incredibly hard, took their LAMDA exams. Waiting anxiously over the summer they returned to excellent results: 18 Merits and 3 Distinctions, 100% success! At Fowey River Academy LAMDA offers students something different: meeting and interacting with an array of different yet like-minded people from different year groups being one that is important to me. Through the process of achieving our LAMDA qualifications, we have overcome obstacles and learned key skills that can be transferred into our other academic subjects: analysis, inference, symbolism and other similar things. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Hall on behalf of the entire group for her dedication, support, patience and her overall drive for us to better ourselves. LAMDA has enabled the Bronze and Silver medalists to gain between 35 and 55 UCAS points, with the merits and distinctions obtained equating to an A s, B s and C s at AS level. Miss Hall, Head of Drama said, The results are a credit to the students and their efforts over the year, we are looking forward to having our first year of LAMDA Gold students entered in 2016. LAMDA club will be starting this term and students should see the enrichment timetable for further information or see Miss Hall in the Drama Studio. Enhorabuena y felicidades! Congratulations and well done to our Year 7 student Henry Chapman. Henry recently sat his Spanish igcse at Truro School and was rewarded for his effort and hard work with an A*. Fantastic result and well deserved. Fowey Flyers Need You Do you fancy joining the Fowey River Academy show jumping team the Fowey Flyers? If you do, please see Miss Wherry for further details. Taster Days We ve had some fantastic taster days at the local Colleges recently Truro College, Cornwall College and Bodmin College have hosted the whole year group. Students have had an opportunity to take part in a variety of subjects as well as find out about Apprenticeships and get a real feel for the different College sites. The taster days are one of many events during the year which will enable students to make more informed decisions about their futures. Sophie Deis-Horton! Earlier in the year Sophie had entered the nationwide Grimm Tales competition with her mini saga called The 10 Clock Horses, she had her entry published in Grimm Tales The West Country compendium. Since then, Sophie has been chosen by the publication s editorial team as being the best writer in her category. Mrs Guest is thrilled about Sophie s news, she said I am so proud of Sophie and this award underlines her incredible talent for writing. Sophie attends a weekly Creative Writing class at FRA, of which, there is a great deal of skill and passion. Sophie's award also highlights the support this group provides one another as students regularly share and discuss their writing. Watch out J.K. Rowling! Cambridge Residential 2015 Last week a group of 17 students from Bodmin College, Fowey River Academy, Looe Community Academy and Sir James Smith s School on a residential visit to the University of Cambridge. Pupils stayed in student accommodation at Downing College and enjoyed two days of activities organised by the School and College Liaison Officer at Downing. The pictures show their tours of Downing and Pembroke Colleges. The trip was a resounding success and has raised the aspirations of the students, with almost all now planning apply to Oxford or Cambridge when they reach Year 13.
Summer School 2015 by Miss Dennes During Summer School we participated in a range of activities from rocket making, ice cream making, cooking, tile making, camping, teambuilding activities, sewing and bag making, a range of sports, and every week went on a Wednesday to Tolcarne Newquay where they surfed, body boarded, took part in archery and slack lining. All the students were fantastic and really got to know each other, some of teachers and their way around the school.
