PSLE MTL e-oral

HOW? 2017 PSLE MTL e-oral Assessment WHY?

2017 PSLE e-oral Assessment From 2017, videos will replace pictures as test stimulus in PSLE oral assessments.

2017 PSLE e-oral Assessment During the assessment, students will be given 10 minutes to prepare which includes reviewing the reading passage and watching a 1 minute video.

2017 PSLE e-oral Assessment After watching the video, students will be asked 3 guiding questions relating to the theme in the video. (1) A question about the content of the video (2) Student s thoughts / views / comments related to the theme (3) Student to share a similar / relevant experience

WHY? 2010 MTL Review Committee Review the teaching and testing of Mother Tongue Languages (MTLs) in Singapore schools to ensure that it can stay effective and relevant with the changing language environment The Committee emphasized that MTL has to be a living language for students, and not just to be taken as an examinable subject

WHY? 2010 MTL Review Committee Oral communication is an important 21 st century skill Video is used as test stimulus as it can better portray real-life situations and provide authentic contexts for oral conversation and discussion The use of ICT to create realistic, interactive settings can better engage and motivate students to develop oral proficiency

HOW? The impacts on MTL Teaching A new MTL curriculum was introduced in 2015 to develop students to become confident and effective communicators. The curriculum emphasizes on interaction skills which focus on getting students to articulate their opinions and feelings. The syllabus will be progressively rolled out to the P6 level in 2020.

How can you as parents help your child to prepare? During the oral, remind your child to listen and watch carefully, try to remember certain keywords or phrases that have been used during the video. Also to pay attention to the main theme and sequence of events shown in the video. Don t panic. Remember, whether it s a picture description or video oral, it is just a medium. The objective of the exercise is the same - to allow students to express their comments and ideas in a guided form. Build up their spoken Mandarin foundation with good phrases and solid sentence structures and, no matter what syllabus changes are to come, they will be able to confidently adapt.

How can you as parents help your child to prepare? Practice with everyday pieces of information (e.g. news articles, brochures, posters, advertisements etc). Make it a habit to notice such information in your daily commute and have a casual conversation with your children. Comment on the character s behaviour, what your children have learnt from that piece of information, and ask them to share a relevant or similar experience. Let them get used to developing an opinion on various topics. Expose, Expose, Expose. Expose them to different mediums of communication. Just a little exposure everyday will raise their general level of awareness of the language.

The guiding principle is to allow students to actively use what they learn in the classroom as opposed to learning it for purely academic purposes. Hence, the focus is on real-life usage. 1. More emphasis on interaction skills, both written and oral a. Videos will be used in oral exams where students will have to describe and be prompted from what they see, rather than describe a printed picture. b. New PSLE questions based on context will be tested. I.e. test students' response to a specific scenario by offering MCQ options. E.g. Qns - Based on the above scenario, what will your response/reply be? Pls refer tohttp://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/files/2011/annex-b-mtl-review.pdf for sample question. c. New or modified items testing interaction skills will take up 20% of the PSLE exam from 2017.

Instead of having a picture to look at and describe, the Oral is now a Stimulus-Conversation. Your child will have to answer the examiner s questions based on the graphic stimulus (e.g. Do you think you would like to sign up for this camp? Why? ) How can you help your child? Look carefully. Listen carefully. In order to do well, your child has to be able to read and interpret the graphic or visual stimulus, as well as to understand the examiner s questions. Your child also has to have the necessary experience or general knowledge in order to have opinions, and theexpressive language skills to use the appropriate words and sentences to express his or her ideas.

Parents can help by doing the following on a regular basis: 1. Look out for information to read around us (notices, newspaper articles, advertisements etc) 2. Make a habit of selecting one on a regular basis and discuss them casually. Do not keep asking questions like an interrogation - this may affect your child s confidence in oral examinations. Instead, model or demonstrate how you express your opinions about them ( Look, they want to encourage people to be environment-friendly and bring their own bags. That is a good idea. We should support them. ) 3. Look out for key vocabulary or questions that your child may need to understand and explain them. For example, it would be hard for your child to talk about What do you think is the greatest invention? if s/he does not even know what invention means. Other words include advantages, disadvantages. 4. Give examples to illustrate different words your child may use to answer questions. For example, when asked How often? type of questions, your child may need to know a range of words such as everyday, once in a while, or hardly ever etc.

5. Praise and encourage your child for original thinking and attempting to put his thoughts into words even if he does not get it right on the first attempt. Rephrase his attempt to show him how he can say it. 6. The key word here is conversation. Don t make it an interrogation, or artificial drill. Think about how we have conversations with other people: keep the information clear and interesting, and the atmosphere positive.

Aligning Teaching and Testing to Achieve Proficiency Strengthening Interaction Skills 34. There should be more language activities and tasks in class for students to apply and develop their communication skills. In real-life communication, much of language use is for interaction, requiring a combination of receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills (speaking and writing). Many real-life situations also require spontaneous two-way interaction (e.g. listening and responding orally during a conversation or reading and responding in writing to an email). Hence, our curriculum will emphasise spoken interaction and written interaction skills in addition to the four basic skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. Video clips, instead of line drawings, will be used as stimuli for oral examinations. The video stimuli will provide more engaging and realistic contexts for conversation5 between students and examiners.

The Committee makes the following recommendations for schools to achieve this goal: a. Organise school-based CL, ML and TL Fortnights annually, in collaboration with community organisations and key stakeholders including parents and alumni. During the MTL Fortnights, a range of outside-class MTL activities will be provided to enable students to learn and use MTL in novel and exciting ways. The MTL Fortnights should bring MTL learning into the community and the community into the school to kindle students interest to use MTL; b. Organise Mother Tongue language and cultural camps to immerse students in an environment that encourages them to learn and use the language; c. Organise structured reading programmes that provide age-appropriate reading materials and reading corners. Schools should also find creative ways to cultivate in students the habit of reading MTL books; and d. Engage parents to support students in learning MTL (e.g. via sharing platforms or online resources).

2017 PSLE e-oral Assessment From 2017, videos will replace pictures as test stimulus in oral assessments, as it is a better medium to portray real-life situations and provides authentic contexts for oral conversation and discussion. Students will be required to watch a 1 minute video and express their views and opinions relating to the themes.
