Creating a Video Lesson in PlayPosit Instructional Design Group PlayPosit is a video tool that allows instructors to add question to YouTube videos to enhance instruction. Rather than passively watching a video, students are compelled to stop periodically and respond to questions that check for perceptions and understanding. Instructors can then collect the responses to gauge how students respond to the video content. This how-to guide details how to create an interactive lesson in PlayPosit and then link to it from Blackboard. Creating a Video Lesson in PlayPosit 1 2 1. To start, go to www.playposit.com. Click JOIN NOW (IT S FREE). 3 2. Indicate that you are an instructor, and then enter your name, @northeastern.edu email address, and create a password. Then, click SUBMIT. 4 3. Playposit displays your Dashboard. Click DESIGN VIDEO BULB to create a lesson. 4. Here we ll click the YouTube option to search for a video. You can also search other video providers, or upload an MP4 video. 5. Enter the search terms for the video, and click SEARCH. 5 6. After selecting the video from the queue on the right, click ADD. 6

7. You should now see your video in edit mode. At the top of the screen, click the default title, New Bulb, to rename and configure it. 7 8. Give the lesson a title and learning objective. See the recommended settings to the right. Restricting navigation too much can sometimes be frustrating for students. 8 9. Scrolling down from the Settings, you can also edit segments. When finished, click CLOSE. 9 10. At the bottom of the screen, you can see the timeline for the video. By clicking on the orange button in the center of the timeline, you can view tools to trim the video or add questions. Here we ll click Add Question. 10 11. There are a variety of question types you can choose from. We ll click Multiple Choice. 11

12. Write your question. There are a number of text editing tools to choose from. 12 13. You can enter your answer choices. You can also select a correct answer, and click on the gear icons to enter feedback for each answer choice. 13 14. When finished editing the question, click Save. 14 15. If you are finished editing the entire lesson, click the three-dot icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Then click Finish. This will return you to your dashboard of lessons. The next section covers how to create a link within Blackboard to the lesson, so that students can view it. 15

Linking to your Lesson from Blackboard 3 By linking to the lesson through Blackboard, you can track student responses in the Grade Center. Once created, when students click on the link, the lesson will launch. 1. Log into Blackboard at www.blackboard.neu.edu. 2. Find your course and navigate to the content area where you want students to access the lesson. Here we ll go to Course Materials. 4 3. Click Build Content, then PlayPosit, located at the bottom of the list. 4. Give the lesson a name and be sure to click Enable Evaluation if you want responses to sync with a column in the Grade Center. Enter a point value for the lesson and click Submit. 5. Find the link generated in Course Materials. Click on that link. 5 6. Blackboard now asks you to assign the lesson you created to this link. Click GET STARTED. 6

7. Find the lesson you wish to assign, and click ASSIGN. 7 8. Click SET AS LTI LINK. 8 9. The link to this lesson is now configured within Blackboard. Notice that PlayPosit is currently running within the Blackboard interface. You can return to the content area of your Blackboard course by clicking Course Material in the breadcrumb trail at the top of the screen. 9 Grade Center Integration If you wish, you can go to the Grade Center to confirm that a column was created to correspond with the lesson. Multiple choice and check mark questions will automatically push to the Grade Center. However, open-ended responses will need to be graded within the Monitor section of PlayPosit and then exported to the Grade Center.
